Correct - I think what Pushka was referring to was that the unions may or may not be able to dictate how members of the ALP caucus vote in a leadership ballot and therefore which member of the ALP gets to be the leader of the ALP - and ergo - whom gets to be PM.

Perfectly stated and a much better job than I did. :)

C'mon, it's too late for logic in this argument ;)

Except they are making some strange link to the election process. Name any political party that allows the electorate choose their leader. All parties are formed to promote certain interests and they choose a leader within their members. That has nothing to do with the democracy being alluded to in that post.

I lost my bet with my husband. I thought Rudd wouldn't challenge. This would be laughable if it wasn't the people running our country.

Don't pay him yet. He hasn't officially challenged, Julia just got jack of waiting.

Or her super has matured and she can now retire, apparently she says if she loses she quits.

I would love to see a breakdown of entitlements based on dates or am I being unfair

The early timing and very late notice of the ballot would seem to suggest that the Gillard supporters are trying to rush the Rudd supporters into action before the Ruddites get the numbers.

Anyone brave enough to make a prediction if Rudd does challenge?

That was the rumour last week. Something to do with dates and entitlements in super.

Queensland to win at home but other than that no

Can you quote Windsor's position on that before the election ?

From a quick Google the electorate couldn't have been feeling that "betrayed" - he was still lining up to take ~50% of the primary vote.

He was until two months ago but things have changed. His federal seat is mainly made up from two State seats-Tamworth and New England.
Tamworth was lost by the sitting Independent to the Nationals with a swing to the Nationals of 12%.The Independent held Northern tablelands even though there was a 10% swing to the Nationals. He still had just under 70% of the 2 Party Preferred vote. However this year he resigned in disgrace.
The Nationals won the byelection with >35% swing on primary votes and 50% swing on the 2 Party Preferred vote. The rumours that the previous incumbent's campaigns had been funded by the ALP was a major factor.A few that I have talked to say they no longer trust Independents.

And just to bury those who are trying to say that the electorates of Lyne and New England aren't inherently conservative you just have to look at the Senate voting in 2010.The seats with the biggest swings against the ALP/Greens in Australia were-
1-Lyne.
2-New England.

In which case my comment stands - the unions can't install any one who wasn't elected by their constituents.

So you admit that the unions control who is PM when the Labor Party is the elected Government even though the electorate may have voted for a different person as leader.

I think Gillard will win. Especially if an open ballot. As she should. Face the music. Be accountable and all that.

This painful period will be in the history books/records for our descendants to wonder what were this group of tossers thinking.
I just hope the loser resigns immediately but these people really like sucking us for all they can get so they may hold it together until that announced date in September.
