If Rudd challenges, he'll win. If he doesn't it will be confirmation he's in this as a spoiler. If he squibs it, his name will be Mudd, not Rudd. The sort of desperate faith that has been placed in him is not something to trifle with, if he truly loves Labor.

Maybe Shorten will contest against both Gillard and Rudd? If the loser(s) have to resign from politics (and enforcement of that is dubious anyway) then the ALP caucus will have the choice of killing off their future leader and still being stuck with either an un-electable Rudd or an unelectable Gillard.Or putting Shorten in and eliminating two problems in one meeting?

If I was Shorten - I would run tonight if Rudd and Gillard both throw their hats in the ring. By 'manning up' and challenging them both he would also wash away some of the approbrium of the decision to replace Rudd in 2009.

So you admit that the unions control who is PM when the Labor Party is the elected Government even though the electorate may have voted for a different person as leader.

I think Gillard will win. Especially if an open ballot. As she should. Face the music. Be accountable and all that.

The electorate does not vote for the PM.

The ballot is a secret ballot according to the smh.

No way will Shorten want to be associated with this. Wont want anything to stick on him. And given the impact of any change (if there is one) the GG may need to intervene.

The electorate votes for a particular person put up by each party as the Leader. Technically they don't vote for the leader but there is way more to politics than the technical.

Secret ballot. Ok, that may change things. But as Abbott outlined today that means 7 Ministers will also have to resign. Unless of course they weren't honest in the first place.

I can just see it now, state of origin and live from Canberra splitting the screen in half on CH9, question is who is kicking an own goal?

Gunna be an interesting 24 hours.

And, of course, Rudd "zips" without answering any questions. What pathetic behaviour.

Its true that American-esque personality-cult politics has become more and more prominent in Australia. much to our disadvantage.

But that doesn't change how the system actually works.

As I said earlier, it seems what a lot of people want is a dictatorship with term limits, not representation.

Maybe he's getting tired of giving the same answers to the same questions every day.
If he's got any sense, if there is a ballot he won't stand, like last time.

But both have said that they will quit parliament if they lose.

Which is good for the party. It will save a by-election after the main election.

How disrespectful was Kevin not referring to the PM or the Leader but just as Julia?

The Democrats.

And the Republicans.

You need to back that up with a reference. The public vote for the president and they may even vote for each parties presidential candidate. But they do not seem to vote for the leaders of those parties national committees.

His behaviour and touring around the country, attending other electorates, bobbing up in blue ties, holding press conferences depicts a man who likes to manipulate the media. If he was as tired as you suggest we would not have seen his mug on tv for the last 4 months. And apparently he's standing so he also has no sense. :)

This painful period will be in the history books/records for our descendants to wonder what were this group of tossers thinking.
I just hope the loser resigns immediately but these people really like sucking us for all they can get so they may hold it together until that announced date in September.

Well hopefully if Rudd wins he will go to the polls ASAP I heard he can hold out until Feb but surely his best chance would be to go now.

Whoever wins I hope they get trounced come election day

Scratch that, didn't realize he'd announced he'll stand.
More fool him.
