A general question for the group. Has there been any discussion on when either side would start reducing our debt and how they'd do it?

Haven't seen any.

That's because this thread is all about slinging mud at each other and blaming whichever party you don't like for anything and everything.

Don't expect to find anything constructive here :)

Would like to see something from any party on this. However I do not think we will.

The point however, is if a "failed" scheme makes someone unfit to govern then applying the same standard suggest Abbott is unfit to govern because if the "failed" dental scheme. My objection is demand the government be replaced because if these projects and be replaced by the author of a failed project. Double standards.
Good point. This is the flip test in action.

I see Rudd as unfit to govern, not because of any specific policy failure - both sides have wins and losses on the policy ledger - but because he is more talk than action, he is an atrocious leader, and he simply cannot be trusted.

On a personal note, I find it difficult to support any behaviour that is so driven by hatred and revenge. Rudd's deliberate destabilisation of Gillard through leaking, stalking, undermining her in an extremely difficult time for her government is not the sort of behaviour I like to see in my national leader. I want someone who behaves in a more honest, considerate and open-hearted fashion. I want someone who is a team player, because I see myself as a tiny part of the Australian team and having a leader who puts themselves above everybody else is never going to be in my best interest.

Or anyone else's.

Rudds mob today as as a last act his
Government spends $450m on after hours school care... its crazy.

I doubt it will be the last act its day 1

The bribes and promises will be coming thick and fast over the next month I don't suppose there'll be much explanation of where all the money's coming from (from either side)

Personally I wish I could just vote this Saturday I could do without any more foreplay I'm over it already.

Looks like today's LNP drinking game word is "Unravel". So far I've heard Abbott, Hockey, Abbott, Morriscum and Bishop trip over each other to use it the most. Poor Chrissie Pyne, however, has been too busy desperately trying to explain his Gonski backflip and seems to have forgotten the instruction to say it.

You quoted the gross tax receipts and then launched into your tirade. You cherry picked one number and had a rant while ignoring every thing else that people have mentioned like %gdp. This is exactly the same as your cherry picking gross debt and having a rant, while ignoring an comparison to a relevant base or the evidence that shows the entire world has faced similar problems.

You have a history of cherry picking your one favorite number, without bothering to compare it to a base that is consistent across multiple years and then having a tirade at the ALP. That is utter BS

So you cherry pick the statistics that favour your argument then go into a rant?
As I explained you cant have it both ways-ie the Government increased spending to save us from a depression ie stopped a negative GDP growth for 2 quarters. The result of the Government increasing GDP is that receipts as a % of GDP goes down.
The fall in income as a percentage of GDP in our case is that spending increased a lot faster than income. Therefore Amaroo is right in pointing out that the Rudd/Gillard governments in all but 1 year had income rising at a rate in excess of inflation.

I am not coming here to put my view on who's better ra ra ra ra ra but just a friendly reminder for those who will be away, remember to postal vote :)

I will be in Ibiza so probably off my face partying to a all night foam party and without a worry in the world to who have won the election ;)

Only if you recover from the "cut to the bone" ALP drinking game! That would be a case of alcohol poisoning for sure.

Reminds me of the "buzzword bingo" games we had when management/external consultants came into our workplace. :)

I'm still getting over:-

Working families
Labor values.....really liked this one. Noticed, it's been dropped since the Eddie & Macca show got exposed

Or the "shiver down the spine" ALP drinking game.

Apparently july car sales were rather interesting. The sky isn't falling just yet, it seems.

*sounds of silence from the ALP haters*

If only that is what he pointed out. Instead he just said they collected $xx_ million in tax and howard only collect $yyy million and therefore the ALP is bigger taxing. He did not bother with using a comparative base like GDP. Sorry %GDP is your little thing not Amaroo's and he certainly said nothing about income raising in excess of inflation.

Unfortunately Bob Brown has quit politics, so you haven't got anyone to vote for that meets your criteria.

A "more cautionary or incremental approach to stimulous (sic)" would have seen Australia go into recession. Admittedly the impact of what would have been a comparitively mild recession is impossible to predict, but one of the important elements that kept us going (amongst others) was consumer confidence. A lot of people here were either unaware that the global financial system was going belly-up, or (like me) were simply too busy planning how to spend the extra dosh that interest rate cuts had handed me.

Just a couple of things on which we might disagree - you make the assertion that say a $20Bn stimulus saved Australia's economy but without having seen a parallel universe with a more staged approach then its just an assertion. If you can't accept that maybe China/exchange rates/different banking rules and other stuff was a component in the relative performance of the Australian economy then thats fine. Heaps of people lost their jobs with the GFC, like nearly everyone, I would have saved my $900 or paid off debt, and the people that were spending sure were - on the internet an on overseas holidays which may be awesome for consumer confidence but dosen't really help out the australian economy does it?

Yep - if we held some back before we would have more ammo now. But as we have a AAA credit rating ammo is not in short supply, it is more a case of is it time to hit the accelerator or the brake. The world economy is still fragile and China is cooling - normally that would lead to a government running deficits to cushion the economy....

Credit ratings can be nonsense, its one of the many reasons we ended up with a GFC. As you say - difficult to tell where the economy is heading but the critics of the current government have pointed out that stuff like the carbon tax, increased spending and interference in state matters like education and health, having the treasurer with his foot on the acelerator forcing the RBA to keep interest rates higher than they could have been have all acted as additional headwinds to the private sector that was already facing exchange rate pressures, high wages, disruptive power of the internet on some business models etc.
