"Being kind to unlawful arrivals is no longer a vote winner" That's for sure. That's how Howard got back in.

However, the numbers coming by plane far far outweigh those desperate enough to have to come by boat.

When it costs a few hundred for a safe and comfortable flight and a few thousand for a risky and uncomfortable boat trip, there's obviously more to it than desperation. People aren't so desperate that they behave like morons.

Re: Where will you be election day (September 14th)

What was that GST thing all about?

Rudd thought he had scored a point by saying that Abbott would increase the GST. 1993 all over again.

"Will you increase the GST, Mr Abbott?"

"No."

And then Rudd kept banging on! Was he listening?

Or just following the script.

Morons? Of all the adjectives I may have thought of "morons" was not one of them.
Well, it was your suggestion that people would ignore a cheap and safe plane ride in favour of an expensive and dangerous boat trip.

What would you choose?
(a) Plane
(b) Boat

You'd have to be a mug to choose the boat over the plane, wouldn't you?

Was just following his illegal notes!
That was the point when on Ch7 Rudd dipped into the 20-30% approval range.

As you well know to arrive by plane a visa is required. The application for a visa specifically ask if you plan to claim asylum. I guess the "morons" arriving in boats have the integrity to not make a false declaration.

In a choice between someone who lies on government documents and someone who doesn't lie to the government. I'll pick honesty any day of the week.

He's not making any traction and TA is looking good by comparison.
Flimflam pretty much sums up the Rudd push.

"FlimFlam" was the Coalition catchphrase a couple of days ago, and is so dated that even the Murdoch press has moved on. If you want to be a true right-wing sycophant you will have to get your krap together and follow the Twitter conversation at #RightWingRegurgitator to get the phrase of the day!

I missed the debate last night - watched the cricket instead.

I do love this paragraph:
7News viewer vote
Over 24,000 Australians had their say in the 7News Viewer Vote overnight - and they overwhelmingly named Tony Abbott the winner.
68% of respondents said Mr Abbott won the debate, while 72% said he would be Australia's next Prime Minister.
The result was even more conclusive than voters' pre-debate predictions - 55% of voters thought Mr Abbott would win.

As for Rudd's notes, isn't it called "deniability". Sorry,it doesn't wash with me. He knew the rules

I watched it. Rudd looks nothing like the 07 version. I think he's won the election he wanted the most (caucus).......the rest is just free flights and nice digs.

But we invited those Poms. And the Balts and the Greeks and the Turks. We had a program, we built places for them to live, we found jobs for them, we invited them in and they were welcome.
Define "invite".

We have an immigration system that currently allows for "inviting" ca. 200k permanent settlers per year. Refugees fit into that "invitation".

Not so the boat people, who don't ask and have created a huge headache. It costs us a lot of money to intercept them, house them, process them. That's money that is going to be very keenly felt as the national income continues to shrink. The fact that Rudd, who campaigned six years ago on being more welcoming and lenient has now turned completely around and is promising to permanently settle them in in PNG - of all places! - is proof enough that attitudes have changed.
There's a fairly strong argument that if we didn't spend so much time trying to round up refugees into concentration camps and letting them sit there for years as a "deterrent" to their friends, but instead focused on getting them integrating into the community as quickly as possible, that the costs would be substantially lower.

Maybe your implicit assumption that all else is equal between getting on a plane vs a boat, is flawed ?

I haven't had a chance to read it yet. But out of interest did they include the verdicts of the nine and ten audiences. Just AFR did mention all 3 results.

No they didn't mention the other polls. Presumably the data from those polls are available online somewhere.

Is there somewhere I can go to view the debate - would love to see it before settling in to watch Q&A at 9.30pm tonight

Personally I do not concern myself with the results of such polls - those that bother to participate in such I reckon tend to have a party / line to push and are rarely impartial. (Even nine's 'undecided', to me does not imply 'impartial'.)

To me the result of this poll (as posted by erkpod) has just as much meaning:
Shamelessly stolen from Twitter as I wasn't watching TV. This is why we can't have nice things.....

Ah yes. Economies of scale. If we have a hundred times as many, it will only cost fifty times as much.

Well the question was poorly put serfty - the answers (I presume) were meant to be Tony Abbott and Kevin Rudd, not yes and no (which make no sense as answers)
