The point is that neither Rudd nor Abbott chose the background for these photographs. If they had, they would have removed any controversial elements, as we generally see during planned set-pieces such as campaign launches where backgrounds are bland.I cannot even begin to imagine how any rational person would consider the situations to be vaguely comparable.
Out on the campaign trail, photoshoots are risky for two reasons:
1. Controversial elements may be present - a protester's placard, a kid making faces in the background, an unfortunate coincidence.
2. Media snappers aren't likely to refrain from taking the most interesting shot.
