I have a good memory. There are generally summary pages on the ATO website when changes are made to things like deductibles - no-one is going to assume everything on the page applies to you.

But no-one believes bald assertions that seem to fly in the face of the available evidence from people who won't back up those statements with any kind of evidence.

As the young kids say, link or it didn't happen.

<I disagree with your assertion>!You have missed it.That is why I left a National accounting firm and signed up with a Brisbane firm-have done much better.

Well we all know that you can change your situation by working hard. Just work hard and everything will change.

To get the same take home money I did 7 years ago I do have to work 25% more weeks.Fortunately I really enjoy my work so it is no problem.

Re: Abbott in Government

Geez, the bean counters doing the national opinion polls are pretty damn good!

Their prediction for TPP was 54/46 in favour of the coalition.......within spitting distance of the finish line the result looks to be close enough to a bullseye. Always amazes me that they can predict a national poll result based on fortnightly opinions of around 1,200 people:shock: If PUP wasn't in the game - they probably would have had the result bang on.

Never believe a politician that shouts they don't take any notice of opinion polls! Change 350,000 votes (in the right seats) - you change the Government.

Re: Abbott in Government

The only thing with polls is that they can either become a self fulfilling prophecy, or the opposite. They could spark a change in voting behaviour just because of their existence.

If only we knew who those 350,000 were. It could save the rest of us a lot of pain.

They could be you. Not me - the Canberra seats have been steady since 1995. The ACT votes in two Labor members by safe margins and as a result neither side pays much attention to Canberra.

Re: Abbott in Government

I used to be one of them until I gave up my landline. My son, very much an issue voter, has been called numerous times over the last six months by 2 of the well known market research people. He also participates in consumer panels for various products, as did I until a couple of years ago.

I know pollers do all sorts of statistical tricks to alter the data they collect to reflect the general population. For example if you have data from 300 males and 200 females, each of the female's data will be worth slightly more because they make up ~50% of the population but only 40% of the sample. Repeat with race, age, location, profession, etc.

I wonder how well it works to counteract the natural bias against people who dislike doing polls, like me :)

Maths is an exact science.Economics is not.
If today's tax take is converted to 2007/08 dollars and compared to the tax take then it is greater. That is a fact.
There is more than one way to skin a cat just as there is more than one way to compare rates of taxes.
I pay significantly more tax now that is a greater % of my income than ever under Howard/Costello.Many here allude to the same fact.To us your argument means absolutely nothing.

Wow, what sort of a moron is giving you tax advice? Somebody saw you coming a mile away if that's actually true.

Every accountant would give me the same answer.
And that answer would be "a fool and his money are soon parted", I suspect.

I would love to know as well but for a different reason.

I would like to see them struck off the electoral roll because we have them to thank for getting it wrong most of the time....

Re: Abbott in Government

I don't think anyone will be shedding tears for Sophie Mirabella by the sound of it. On either side. Apart from her.

Yes, I'm happy with the election result including the outcome for the seat of Indi. It's interesting to see how her numbers have come down from when she was first elected....

I think that's a bit harsh.

Some people's tax affairs can be very complex and flood levy's, extra Medicare levy's, removal of medical tax offsets, ability to deduct Heath insurance, rules relating to trusts, investments etc, etc, etc can have a significant effect on how much tax some people pay and almost no affect on what others pay.

Before the digital lynch mob is finished I just thought I'd mention that possibly drron could be referring to changes to the medicare levy (NDIS), or changes to the Private Health Insurance Rebate, or bringing forward of company tax payments from quarterly to monthly (not a change in tax rates but a bringing forward of the revenue) or the cap on self education deductions. Thats before we even go to the very complex area of interactions between superannuation and retirement of whic I can't claim to be an expert.

If you pay the carbon tax through electricity bills and are not on a low income then the compensation is insufficient or absent for the high income earners, as opposed to the overcompensation that the lower income earners got.

Just a few things that spring to mind - although I won't claim to be an expert in drron's own tax situation!

718 votes and falling.......come on Ted!

+ 1 Keyboard Warriors are just the worst......

Some people haven't got the "means" to think beyond the bog standard, PAYE, joe average tax requirement.

You mean like this - "Well, my tax rate is down so therefore that must mean that everyone is paying less tax now"

They usually get it very right as far as electoral trends go.

One of the things I love about Australia - one of the many things - is that everyone gets a say, and everyone's vote is equal. The AEC makes it as easy as possible for people to register, even if their address is "Under the William Jolly Bridge". Unlike the USA, where obstacles are placed in the way of voters out on the edge of society.
