Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

You could see the writing on the wall only about a week after the election when Windsor and Oaksh*t threw their lot in with Labor and they had a media conference or something and Windsor thought the mining tax would be up for discussion at the tax summit and Swanny gave him the brush off and told him to talk to the Govt like anyone else... Light weights trying to mix it and out of their depth most of the time...

Just did a quick search on their popularity in the electorates and found this in The Australian, yes i knows its a bastion of the far right etc, but Oct 24 2011:

An exclusive Newspoll for The Australian shows both Tony Windsor and Rob Oakeshott would lose their seats if an election were held now and that 70 per cent of voters in their electorates are opposed to Labor's clean-energy bills, which are set to pass the Senate next month.

According to the poll conducted last week, a clear majority of respondents in New England and Lyne do not support their representatives' decision to help Labor form a minority government in September last year, while the independents' roles in shaping the carbon tax have produced a spectacular reaction against them.

The survey reveals that primary support for the two independents, who played crucial roles in the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee that shaped the clean-energy legislation, has almost halved since the election in August last year.

IN the electorates of New England and Lyne, conservative-minded voters are preparing to give their independent MPs a hiding.

Mr Oakeshott's primary support in Lyne, on the NSW mid-north coast, has collapsed from 47.1 per cent at the time of the election to 26 per cent. Mr Windsor's support in New England, which adjoins Lyne, has slumped from 61.9 per cent to 33 per cent.

Does anyone know what it is today??? Either way, its a text book example of how to manage your seat obviously, I think they should run off now and write a manual on it...

...but he'll be re-elected with an increased majority you can be sure of that.
Try to give away any thoughts you may have that you know what is "right" and others are stupid rednecks if they have a contrary opinion. The measure of political success in a democracy is to tally up the votes every so often, and Katter will once again represent his electorate where so many others are going to find that they are in want of a job come October.

I am not too sure Bob Katter's electorate has missed out on too much compared to the Electorates of the MHRs Windsor and Oakeshott.trawling through the RDA grants Kennedy got 2 grants in 2011.Neither Lyne or New England has received one as far as I can see.
Prior to the 2010 election Kennedy certainly did better than Lyne or New England-

And of course Mt.Isa was the first place on the mainland to have cable laid by the NBN-
First NBN building blocks on mainland Australia | Senator Stephen Conroy | Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy

Despite that no town in Kennedy is on the rollout to 2015 that has been announced.

So browski does that mean the present Government allocates spending to areas where they will gain benefit rather than on a needs or economic basis?

Well it doesn't have to be an either/or situation. However if the needs and economic benefit of 10 regions are similar; I'm sure most governments have their preferences as to who receives funding first.

If absolutely nothing else changes except for the two so called independents. Then labour will fall.
I suspect NSW and Qld however will dish out a bit of a hiding. Swanny may need to pop down to centrelink.

You've got to laugh at back bencher Rockstar Rudd's public appearances today, and everyday, and Paul Howes rants to his union brethren. Seems to me it is labor who is looking very negative in focus now.

Yes Paul Howes speech was a really classy effort. I presume by his colourful use of language and limited use of vocabulary that his education stalled fairly early in life.

I suppose he has to tailor it to the audience but presumably he realised that it would be reported in the media; does he really think he's doing himself or Julia any favours.

I think Swanny will be taking his extremely large gilt edged super. Apparently worth $5.5M

I liked Rudd's comments todaythat he would support Julia up to the election.

Or in other words until she gets slaughtered then he'll be back

Given what happened to the shares in our super fund today that really hurts.

With members like this tool - ALP has no hope.

Going on his past performance, it wont be worth $5.5m for very long - once he gets his mitts on it.

Yes funny that his can't go down the gurgler it's guaranteed.

I'd like to change politicians super so that their payout relates to their last majority as voted by their electorate.

So very popular generally accepted you've done a good job nice payout. Unpopular dust.

I live in Port Macquarie, and I and many of my community have had the experience of both a Federal & State Government member at the same time (Rob Oakeshott & Peter Beselling)

Peter lost at the last state election, IMO a combination of a backlash against independent members and removal of an inept state government that had run their course long ago. This was a pity as Peter was a much more capable member than what we have now, the current member is largely invisible and in the opinion of most people I have had conversations with not delivering value for her electorate as a part of the party machine.

Interesting to note that Peter was recently voted in comfortably as Mayor as part of an independent group at the last local elections.

Say what you want against Rob IMO he has been a good local member, extracted good results for his electorate under the current arrangements particularly a long overdue investment in health in a fast growing part of NSW. My concerns if he is not returned is that we will have a repeat of the state result, seat won back, little experienced member, who cares.

Personally my experience with independents shows they can achieve results rather than mouth party line platitudes with little results.

I wonder how a parliament made up entirely of independents would work, I think independents work to a certain extent, but their view is generally more parochial and therefore less effective on a wider scale, that's just my opinion though

There is a proposal to make a new word for a billion dollars of deficit in the Australian Budget.
I heard one Billion would be called a "KEV".

Shouldn't it be a "Wayno"? Given he is stuffed when he runs put of fingers to count with.

It's a bit like in the dictionary there is a picture of Tony Abbott under the word "No".

This started in London Sprucegoose. They just got cut to AA rating from AAA status so the joke is on the Brits.
