I always thought that Labor had a bit of advantage with often rude, uncouth loud mouths that would be happily confront a Lib pollie in the street or a shopping centre shouting out all sorts of insults, while Lib supporters never quite confronted Labor pollies the same, making great sound bites for nightly news during election campaigns...

I guess it can cut both way when you turn the true believers against you???

My guess is that the lass with the tattoos would say exactly the same thing to Tony Abbott if he had the same attitude as Julia.

Everything I've heard about Julia Gillard is that those who know her well - including Tony Abbott - think of her as a likeable, funny, thoughtful person. A nice person in her dealings with individuals. But when she has to talk to many rather than one, and especially on television where thousands, possibly millions are watching, she becomes stiff and wooden, her speech full of catchphrases and meaningless cant. The sort of phrases that sound good, but don't mean anything or offend anybody.

She becomes the voice of a PR team.

People pick up on this. They know it's not coming from the heart. It's shi*t intended for public consumption.

The real message Gillard is sending is that she likes votes, but not the voters.

And just look at the way she's gone about this whole Western Sydney thing. It's planned, it's staged, it's got every PR box ticked with the big launch event where only true believers attend, the "hotel next to Rooty Hill RSL", the carefully crafted sound bites.

It's about as genuine as a can of Clayton's.

Contrast this circus to Abbott and Hockey walking the same streets. There's no game plan, no staged stunts, no media director in the wings organising thousands of party faithful. They just go where they want and say what they feel.

People pick up on this.

When it comes to voting - or responding to a poll - people know there is no right or wrong answer. Their choice is right because it is theirs and because nobody is going to criticise them. Whatever they answer, it just goes into the pot and there's no personal comeback, no red mark, no comments from the teacher.

People vote with their hearts and not their heads.

That's why Gillard is going down. Because she is simply not connecting on a personal level.

That, and the fact that her government is a shambles, with Kevin Rudd smirking over her shoulder, Wayne Swan fiddling with his calculator, and Craig Thomson shoveling the brown stuff.

And all the "partners" in the minority governing shambles knifing each other in the back at every opportunity is hardly a good look either...

Gonna be a long 7 months... If it goes that long... Has anyone heard the independents say recently that they only agreed to support Julia???

I just cant believe the campaign that back bencher Ruddy is doing. Thank god we don't have all the back benchers doing this.

Skyring I doubt that those public walks by Hockey and Abbott are totally unplanned.Very likely there are a few that will come up to them with praise or a question that magically they can reply to with the message of today. You do risk the unexpected though.
Even in the 80's this was done.

Tony Abbott not staged managed? That is his minders' worse nightmare!

And I have picked up on the "nice" campaign from the Lib/Nat Coalition of odd bedfellows ... and I quite like it! Of course it is all staged-managed to the max and witnessing Julie Bishop having to tame her death-stare is disappointing, but at least it makes a change from the naysaying and negativity for the idiots.

Are you fair dinkum? The Abbott, Hockey walk around is probably more stage managed than Gillard's. By taking long (photo and television) shots and saying nothing neither of them can stuff up. This is a very real possibility with these two clowns who have no policy and probably look at QLD/NSW for how to govern, i.e. slash and burn with no real idea of where they are going.

And Gillard has policies?
All her announcements presuppose the State Goverments funding a lot of her programs. And just where do they get the money?GST revenues have fallen.
And one of her supposedly skills is as a negotiator. So why does she spring the announcements on the States with absolutely no negotiation.
I admit I am a cynic but I believe she knows she cant get her big announcements up as there is nothing left in the till. She just wants to blame someone else and raid their tills.EG the Gang policy where she wants the States to hand over their powers. This includes their proceeds of crime powers. So this is all about transferring more state money to the Commonwealth.

Actually I think the gang policy is long overdue. Gangs don't stop at state borders yet police jurisdictions do.

Julia's Rooty Hill experiment looks to be going not so well.........On The Project tonight they showed a film clip of the PM giving a public press conference today. The PM was interrupted mid sentence by a 40'ish YO heavily tattooed woman yelling at her that she should wipe her mouth............"because there's more cough coming out of it than your ar#e".

As they say "A picture tells a thousand stories"!

A rare opportunity for the rest of us to see and hear part of the listening audience of talk back radio.

Well, no. Not unplanned - the last politician to do stuff unplanned was Pauline Hanson and the media loved it for the great stories and stuffups. Pure gold in contrast to the pros.

But compare their events to the grand pre-planned circus of the Gillard operation. They aren't going out there to follow a script and to tick all the PR boxes. Abbott - and Howard before him - knew the value of getting out and about without quite so much fuss. You very rarely see Gillard on TV unless she is dressed up for the occasion in carefully selected clothes and makeup and background. Abbott, well he could be doing anything and wearing anything, and the image of Howard going for his morning walks in daggy pants and a green and gold top became an icon of the Nineties and Noughties.

South Australia currently has a dreadful gang problem with random shootings in cafe's, houses, you name it. We had five in 1 week. Yet apparently Ms Gillard wants to concentrate on other states not SA. So much for state borders.

Western sydney has 5 every hour.

Still, try and pump up SA's importance ;)

In other more snoozy related news Victoria's new premier Dennis Nap-time as the former minister of everything has decreed and end to labours financial mismagement. Is that secret politician speak for everything is cancelled?

Well it appears my memory is fading, it was 5 in 4 hours.

Five Sydney shootings in four hours as police probe bikie gang turf war link

Either way, comparing the violence and criminal activity between SA and Western Sydney is like comparing Y to F.

Juila in Western Sydney is still a political stunt that reeks of desperation. I guess to me the the difference is that Abbott's people are smart enough to mask and hide his contempt for average Joe in the street instead of pretend its there like Julia.

Well according to someone who you believe your figures are not believable-
The number of drive-by shootings in this state, in New South Wales rose from 73 in 2010 to 88 in 2011, with around seven incidents per month last year. More than 130 shootings took place in this city.

Just one event - or linked series, then. Not really the sustained rate I imagined from your earlier post!

Still, yes indeed, Sydney is a hotspot.

"his contempt for the average Joe in the street". Any evidence for this? An example?

Re: Where will you be election day (September 14th)

I work in same building where Rob Oakeshott has his office.

Earlier I saw Rob Oakeshott sitting on the breakwall behind his office having his photo taken. When I went out for lunch one of his staff was outside carrying a media release and looking at the photos.

He said he would announce in mid March whether he would run again, be interesting given the attacks and the pressure what he does decide.
