Not really up to the Premiers as to who gets the slice of the GST pie. Segue much?

So.......since no state premiers are going to give up any GST revenue, then I Guess you are advocating an increase in the GST. Wow, surprising, but there u have it.

The GST is administered federally not by the Premiers. They're literally told what they're going to get.

Perhaps I could be accused of wanting a baseline minimum at say 60c in the dollar returned but an increase??? Way to put words into my mouth.

And yes, WA does seem to be propping up the Oz economy just a bit of late... Not sure if it can go on forever... But till then i guess we can let the Melbournites carry on about them being the sporting capital of Australia (the world... the universe...) and the Sydney Siders carry on about being the cultural capital or whatever... Yawn... And that's with out the inhabitants of Brisbane thinking they are the new Las Vegas or whatever they carry on about... ;)

Look Mummy - the colonials are arguing again!!! Do you think they need some more bitty?

I think a case could be made for where is the best investment of the money...

I mean where is WA located, only right next to South East Asia, North Asia, the Indian sub continent and the Middle East...

Where is the power and the money going to be this Asian century??? Where is the investment going to be coming from, where is the population growth of young people occurring globally... Where is some of the bigger population growth going to be attracted to in Australia if they follow the opportunities? Where will this be stifled, stymied or held up if some thought isn't put into smart investments with a bit of vision and planning both industry-wise and socially???

Look Mummy - the colonials are arguing again!!! Do you think they need some more bitty?

This loses me, we're all colonials here aren't we???

Or sorry, where do you hail from again???

I hardly think the mother country is any decent shape to be telling the colonials how it should done anyway so none of us are looking back in that direction???

You are being accused of being deluded about your "plight".
There is no way either the feds are going to give WA more GST (I think Greiner called that "bizarre") and there is no way that a state premier or territory leader is going give it up voluntarily. So...........you can either back an increase in the GST OR you can back an increase in the super-profits tax..........or you could just stop whining. Geez everyone in WA must walk around with faces like a cat's bum.

Guess we could always secede, might be the only way to get the appropriate focus on where it should be... :)

That's good of them. Only took them a bit over 100 years to get around to it.

As long as WA is willing to pay back all the subsidies it received from the Federal Grants Commission (which was set up following a royal commission expressly to subsidise impoverished WA) in today's dollars with interest, then it can go right on ahead. Canberra should be able to do a similar move to Packer with Bond once the boom dies down anyway.

The problem is is that i tend to think WA and its potential has been ignored for a long time from over East, just a personal view, that we've never had the investment to make the most of us...
Not just a personal view. Western Australia has always been in the short slice of the Federation pudding. The secession moves of the 1930s reflect the local feeling, and if it hadn't been for the Japanese threat, we might well now be two nations sharing a continent, with WA the better for it.

Both Liberal and Labor parties put more effort into winning votes in Western Sydney than Western Australia, and when we look at the way the mining revenue is propping up the national government, small wonder there's resentment and a lack of support for the ALP who are pushing the view that it's Wayne Swan keeping our economy afloat.

After September 14th counting we should get to say goodbye to Stephen Smith from WA and several others.
Labor has too little time in Western Australia to get from the hated class to being loved again.
Labor has lost its way and we will have to repay the massive Government over spending once they depart from office.
This year is going like the previous years where we have government spending too far ahead of revenue and we have nothing to show for the spending.

When Bannon and Co led the State Bank disaster in SA and were banished for a few years it was up to the next Govt (Liberal) to resolve the debt crisis. No money and pre GST so no much room to manoeuvre. Then after a few years back to Ranm and Co. they continued to blame Liberals for some of the decisions they had to make to reduce debt. But then in flowed GST and SA, being managed so poorly got more than its share. That, plus the stamp duty from inflated house sales meant we finally had some spare cash. So Ranm and Co started spending. And spending. Then GFC. No house sales. Reduced GST. Not to worry, Ranm kept spending. It's all come unstuck. Olympic Dam, our much trumped cash cow, scrapped. SA is again massively in debt and Labor has only themselves to blame. But SA is going to face a term of a year of hard labor first. Labor is very good at spending other people's money.

Julia has had Tony's measure ever since he shat himself when she told him "It's On". Julia treats Abbott, like Howard did Beasley. She knows she has him covered; that's why she is so confident and Tony walks around aimlessly.
It appears to be increasingly likely that this will become irrelevant very quickly :!:

I would love to see the GST go up as long as personal taxes come down.

I think it's a very fair tax based on consumption that nobody can avoid; unlike personal taxes that can be avoided by the cash in hand brigade

Beginning with the sitting Labor members, eh?

There are sitting Labor members in WA?

I got the impression from this forum that there were only undereducated right-wing FIFO workers and also undereducated right-wing billionaires.
(The only shining light in WA are the mighty Freo Dockers.)

Browski - I respect your views.

I respect that you have your views.

1/ But short of you deliberately trolling..... I have to say you show a disturbing lack of respect for others having differing views. The fact they hold different views does not make them uneducated. For all your accusations of ignorance and bias could equally be thrown back at you (IMHO) ;)

2/ Secondly - I respect that you have an apparent pathological hatred of anyone more right-wing than an SL cardholder; but I fail to see where you get your electoral optimism from??

Even the People's Republic of Moreland (in Melbourne) accept the forthcoming outcome of the election is a foregone conclusion.

You don't have to like it - but I must say you appear to be in fantasy land with your optimism.

Maybe I missed all the winks and smileys but you seem off with the fairies.

And I mean that in the nicest fair-comment kinda way :)
