Passing of a good relationship

The Gold belongs below the Platinum. Not same line next to Platinum.

I think you will find that the signs were printed before Gold's were offered priority boarding and not reprinted for this change, as I noticed at SYD the other week that "& Gold" is just a sticker when the sun flickered on the sign. makes sense not to reprint hundreds of expensive signs. Myth busted. :p

Can I suggest that the chances of a P1 or a CL being in Y on a Long haul is next to zero, you can't realistically get that status from Y , so it is really a devaluation of WP benefits

Hang on hang on... I'm almost P1 and if it wasn't for my holiday earlier this year I would have made it. PURE Y travel!

Hang on... Do we have to pay extra for row 32 now??? When did that start??

well, my hat off to you but that is impressive, you are in a plane twice as much as me, which is already enough

and this is the first (and last) time i have copped the Fee for seat charge

If you are flying every month, price CX PEY exUnited States. Even with the shrinking AU$, I think you will be surprised at the price difference.

Oh yes you can! Even from 90% domestic Y travel ;)
After reading your OP I think QF actually did you a favour here raleyoz. Forget about seat selection for a moment, by your own admission you agreed to pay almost $800 or 35% more to fly QF instead of CX ADL-JFK. Now my question is why??? If you would pay extra to avoid inferior airlines like VA,DL,UA etc. I would understand but CX are as good if not better then QF in almost every aspect. Finally you made the right decision.

There are quite a number of people who dislike CX Y seats though. [I am personally a fan of them but luckily haven't had to *enjoy* those seats in a long while]. Now back to my search for F flights using points ;)

Are you referring to the "shell" seat in Y? I think they have been removed from all long haul aircraft.

I thought they had gone too.... I never flew in it, but the AF Y+ seat was a similar shell design and it was carp!

It's interesting to see what PAX react to in regard to service, cost, comfort etc across the various threads on AFF.

I switched from CX back to QF because of the "Shell" seat, about 4 or so years back. But now that I am largely travelling in J, that issue has gone away, although PEY will come into the equation for flights to Asia.

I have had the chance to compare QF, CX and AY in J, and have gone from comfort to cost as my chief determinant given that they were all quite good. So while my reasons are not the exact equivalent of the OP, I have abandoned QF for international flights based on the impact of their higher fares on my hip pocket even though I like their J product.

Question for anyone interested:

Would it seem fairer (not simpler :) ) if QF adopted a discount system for status for payment of "extra legroom" seats in whY?

eg: 10% discount for Silver, 30% for Gold, 50% for WP and maybe even 60% for WP+?

I know, other airlines offer such seats to their elites (eg: AA/UA) as a matter of course for no charge, but it may make the blow a bit softer. If QF did something like this could the relationship head to mediation? :D

I think that would be great; a decent recognition of status. Though obviouslyfree would be better.

Second this! Row 32 isnt extra leg room, its a bulkhead

The thing I dont understand, is that any person from WP to NB or no status can purchase an exit row for $180 (in this case). So the importance of a customer from QF's point of view is 1x annual airfare + $180 for the NB, or WP (who would be paying $x0,000's annually) + $180.

Wouldn't you:
1. Value the customer who is spending significantly more with your company;
2. Want to be able to offer the higher valued customer something a little bit extra to 'reward' them;
3. Want to ensure the higher valued customer is more comfortable and happy - so they continue to see the 'extra benefit' of always booking with QF.

To me, flying row 44 (on the 747 from BNE) is the same as flying every other row back to 80 - its the extra legroom seats which are a little better. To be told at check in I could pay $180 for an empty extra legroom seat in the row in front (row 43) on a Y Flex ticket to LAX was pretty disappointing.

never a truer work spoken!!

The problem is that QF don't recognise the importance of being loyal to its loyal customers whilst expecting that customers be loyal to them.

Qantas seems to me to take the approach plenty more where they came form and hey the competitors offering aint any better so we got them by the proverbials.

But why would you bother improving when you're already the best in the country? Any incremental increase in service/product won't gain the extra business because it either doesn't exist or you're trying to claim another 1% of Pax of which they are fickle and will switch anyway.

However on the FF side I totally agree QFF is no longer aligned with customer loyalty and it's now almost purely a marketing business.

I didn't think the seat fee was payable when checking in. :?:

Congratulations on your awakening!! Paying 35% more for QF over CX????? Don't think so. What about buying Alaskan miles and maybe using them to fly CX J? Could that be affordable?

Pooch CX can also mean points to AA too you know.
And AA pays the status bonus on CX flights, while QF does not. So an AA Plat traveling on a qualifying CX fare gets 100% status bonus. A QF Plat or QF Gold traveling on a qualifying CX fare does not earn any status bonus. The downside is that you need to purchase H, B or Y economy fares to have a qualifying fare. The cheap CX economy fares don't earn anything in AAdvantage. QFF points are still earned with Y, B, H, K, L, M and V fares. So still not the cheapest fares, but more of the cheaper options than AAdvantage earning.

So if buying Y, B or H fares on CX, then AAdvanatge is good. If buying K, L, M or V fares, the QFF still earns. But as usual earning on the program of the airline used is going to be best earning option.

I feel much like the OP both for the reasons of the much higher fares but also unusability of the 'valuable' points you earn.

The other day I tried to get a simple SYD-BNE return flight in economy on points. Picked the one decent flight left on the day I wanted that wasn't 6 am or 10 pm, got all the way to clicking through to payment and got an error message that I needed to start again. Lo and behold, the seat was no longer available.

I had still been crediting flights in a slow creep to LTG but it hardly seems worth it any more - QF costs more, the points are unusable and any benefits seem to be enhanced away.

When buying W/R/E fares on CX AA is even better. Crediting K/M/L/V fares to CX is also better than the 50% earn with QF.
