Pay as you go Trans-Tasman or Airline.

Just got a Qantas Advisory Panel survey about what i thought of the idea of a pay as you go model for Trans-tasman. Didnt say which NZ destinations just flights between Australia & New Zealand.

I provided feedback in the negative.

I take it the route isnt doing that well. But is a slippery slope to start down.
What do others think? Maybe not just trans-tasman but on other routes in general.

Looks like the QF think-tank is working overtime. Was halfway through the survey and like OP was negative, but realised even thought you expressed your thoughts early, you still had to fill the rest of the data out like you like it. There should be an opt out of some of these questions, but as i joined the Advisory Panel completed it.

With others, i'm really getting fed up with being bombarded with these surveys one you're stayed, eaten or flown. I had 14 last trip and just started to delete them.

What is a “pay as you go” model in this context?

Think similar to the "Basic Economy" fares that many US and EU airlines have started to roll out, then pay extra for baggage, food/drink, seat selection, etc.

I just completed the same advisory panel survey, also in the negative - as much as one or two of the loaded questions would allow.

It is indeed a slippery slope and one that I hope the beancounters at Mascot don't inflict on us. The Tasman is probably about to become a bloodbath now that NZ and VA are competitors again. It seems a mad decision for Qantas to consider going to a model that will trash yields for the sake of maintaining cheap bums on basic seats. That's why they have JQ isn't it? So they can serve the bottom feeder end of the market and keep mainline (or Jitconnict) yields high.

Yep. If I wanted pay as you go I would fly jetstar. I said as much. You can't be full service except for transtasman.

Agree it’s a terrible idea butNZ are already doing it. Unfortunately the other full service airlines are the bit players like LAN and Air China etc who don’t really have the schedule to be a realistic alternative.

Perhaps they are looking to reduce demand to such an extent they can go to the government to reduce services. EK pulls out. QF reduces demand, reduces capacity and then raises fares eventually. Fine for the platinums and golds with their lounge access and meals before. But not so good for anyone else

Just responded to a survey from Qantas proposing various pricing options trans-Tasman, mostly around fare bundles - options to have a base fare with: baggage; F&B; entertainment; seat choice all as optional extras.

Needless to say, I'm not a fan of Qantas becoming the Australian arm of Air New Zealand.

Anyone else?

Yep, same here. I responded along the lines of if I want to pay extra for everything I'll fly Jetstar

My response to the initial question:

I abandoned Air New Zealand Airpoints as an *Elite member due to their introduction of "Seats 2 Suit".

If Qantas introduce similar trans Tasman I will abandon Qantas on the route as well.

For Qantas to introduce "pay as you use" would be tantamount to becoming EasyJet.

Got part way through with negative feedback, then the site stopped responding so gave up.

I suggested if I want to fly a LCC I'll do so, but I don't. If QF wish to go this route, I'll take my business elsewhere.

I also did it and answered in the negative. Main issue I stated was I would not trust that their low cost basic fares would end up being lower or stay lower for long, and the add-ons would simply become price gouges. Also answered the last question as Emirates: better food and drink, and not likely to offer a LCC experience. Such a shame they no longer fly the routes!

I concur completely with the feedback here. BUT, just to play devils advocate for a second, all those people saying they’ll take their business elsewhere are going to go where exactly? Air NZ already use this sort of a model and to an extent so do Virgin.

Absolutely slammed it with negative feedback. Another who pointed out i'd fly a LCC instead and/or shop purely on price rather than fly a "nickel and dime" trans tasman QF.
