Grrrr. After much research and several shop visits, I paid deposit ( sale price) on new camera Canon SX70 HS, after getting assurance with a double check that there was warehouse stock and it would be here in a couple of weeks. I have a month till I'd really like to have it in hand, but have a couple of months till it's really needed.

5 mins later, call from store manager saying, sorry we don’t have any stock, there’s no stock in Australia and we have no idea of when stock will arrive and when it does we have no idea where will be going within Australia. 🤬

Offered a full refund of course. When I went back I asked if I could leave the deposit on and if the camera is still on the never-never in a few months, I could cancel. Effectively an option on the sale price. That's where we stand.

I know all about shortages of chips and of camera stock in general which is why I asked them to double check that they had my choice in stock.

annoying - do you have an alternative you'd like to get. I'm still thinking about getting another camera

I asked the store manager guy and he said there was really nothing around or at least with a hope of being in stock of a similar genre.

Here’s a question. I could take the store display case one;it’s behind a locked screen of course so I’m not sure what it would’ve had a lot of rough handling. Should I take that one?

I probably wouldn't unless they discounted it a lot (like 50%) - it's probably OK but I'd be a bit hesitant

Thanks. That was going to be my next step, although I'm a bit leery, even if they say its in stock (say, on the phone), it seems it may not be!! I doubt if I paid and its "oops, unknown wait time, sorry" I'd get the same treatment as I got locally.

The shop I went into in Hobart (national chain) had 'in stock' on their web site for Hobart. Turns out that's the display one

For FWIW, I have bought cameras in the past from DigitalCameraWarehouse with good results.

Has your Sony carked it?

The Sony HX90V went walkabout in Broome :( but even before that it was a bit unreliable at full zoom (sometimes wouldn't focus)#. Not a bad camera for the price, but these days phones will fit the bill mostly, except for strong zoom, which is why I've bought the Canon SX70 HS for $725 incl delivery to me from DigitalCameraWarehouse.

# its predecessor was more robust

Great service from Lowepro!
While on my 3 week camping trip in Alaska last month, I noticed that about 3cm of the stitching inside the shoulder strap had come undone on my brand new Fastpack BP 250 AW III.
When I returned home I took it back to the shop I had bought it from, as directed by the Lowepro website, but they said they didn't deal with faulty products, so I contacted Lowepro via their website chat. The chat person said they could process the warranty claim and emailed me the form.
Two days later, (after the weekend), I received an email saying my claim had been submitted to their Italian office for approval and less than 2 weeks after that, my brand new backpack was delivered to my home.
So now I have 2 backpacks, one with just a small fault, but still totally usable. Not sure what I'll do with the spare, Lowepro are so hardy they don't really wear out.

I can vouch for their service as well, one of my camera bags had one of the inside seams come apart, not a serious issue, but they took it back and gave me a new one without issue.
Mine is a Whistler 450, a bit heavy but is cabin size. Just checked the Lowe site. Yikes, they have gone up in price!!!

It will get a workout next week, off to NZ for Rally New Zealand.

I offered to send the faulty one back, but they didn't want it. They just asked that I remove any labels, if I wanted to continue using it.
I honestly expected a repair for such a small fault, not a whole new backpack.

Same here, I thought mine would come back fixed, guess it’s not worth their while. I will admit to being a bit of a Lowe fanboy!
Bought my first Lowe backpack in 1981. Probably wouldn’t consider anything else now.

I appreciate it is no longer an issue but as a FYI, the shop that sells the goods must under the Australian Consumer Law deal with any faulty product and cannot under the law say "not my problem".

ACCC says

Who to claim a remedy from

Products

You can claim a remedy from the retailer if the products do not meet any one or more of the consumer guarantees, with the exception of availability of spare parts and repair facilities.

The remedies you can seek from the retailer who sold you the product include a repair, replacement, or refund and in some cases compensation for damages and loss.

The retailer can’t refuse to help you by sending you to the manufacturer or importer.

You can claim a remedy directly from the manufacturer or importer if the goods do not meet one or more of the following consumer guarantees:
  • acceptable quality
  • matching description
  • any extra promises made about such things like performance, condition and quality
  • repairs and spare parts - the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that spare parts and repair facilities (a place that can fix the consumer’s goods) are available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you were told otherwise. How long is ‘reasonable’ will depend on the type of product.
You are only entitled to recover costs from a manufacturer or importer, which include an amount for reduction in the product’s value and in some cases compensation for damages or loss.
