Platinums can now use complimentary upgrade from a Choice fare

Remember that if you are upgrading within 3 hours of the flight departing you won't be guaranteed a meal/ meal choice onboard.

I.e flight departs at 3pm and you upgrade at 2pm.
Catering window closes 3 hours prior the flight departs hence why catering not assured.

Thanks for the info very informative, I assume they would cater business class meals for crew as well ? Plus a couple of spares? I assume the tight catering provision is to prevent wastage. 😉

There's nothing spare in the current operation, everyday something gets cut.

Some crew may offer their own meal, some may not. It shouldn't be expected though.

We do love when wastage is used as a shield for cost cutting though ;)

It would be good if this benefit could be extended to those not on your booking, eg even just immediate family members

I’ve used mine recently for my partner travelling on a separate PNR (I’m booked as reward on same flights).

It sounds like you mean on bookings where you’re not travelling at all, I guess you could be creative and book a flexible fare and then upgrade the families booking, then refund.

I’ve done this many times over the years - works a treat. “Family“ always grateful and Virgin none the wiser. And if you were an Enterprising individual with unused credits, you could take this one step further 😉

And don’t forget to change your family pooling temporarily for all of your ubiquitous family members!

This promotion appears to no longer be valid. I spoke to someone on the platinum line and they advised that I had to be booked on a Flex fare to upgrade, and the promotion doesn't apply to Choice fares anymore.

I'm dubious...the T&Cs said valid to 31 March 2024. Did you hang up and call again?

This is still listed under Plat benefits:

Important to note I think that 31 March 2024 refers to the TRAVEL date, not date of booking or redeeming the upgrade.

I did not - let me attempt that and report back.
Please hold...
But take note of that edit I made re travel date...were you trying to update a flight after 31/03/24?

Thanks, flight is in December '23.

I wonder if I don't qualify as I'm a freshly minted platinum (ticked over 2 days ago).

The HUACA method worked. All sorted in less than 5 minutes.

As long as you have the required update vouchers tagged to your profile , you should be okay.

I've tried a few times for SYD-OOL and OOL-SYD but no go. No upgrade on this route at popular times.

I called up this afternoon and was able to use two upgrade credits to upgrade a CBR-MEL Economy Choice ticket for travel in December.
I'm curious if these types of sort choice upgrades are actually good value (I guess if you've got them left over?)

Depends really.

I have all 4 available which expire mid March.

I could pay flexi $669 to Perth and use one.

Or Choice $379 and use 4.

Saving to me - technically, $290.

Is $290 worth more than 3 upgrade credits? Arguably, no.

However it would otherwise require 29,700 points to upgrade 3 flexi flights to J. Then you'd say, actually it is worth it as the points are worth more than the money equivalent in that scenario. Add in there's little chance I would use all prior to them expiring. Good value no, but better than getting no value.

Used this choice upgrade a couple times.

Flex fare upgrades very useful in transcon trips.
Other than those trips, very seldom VFF members use these upgrade vouchers so this offer to upgrade from choice fares is a genuine bonus and win with VA WP.

What's the negative again? You have to use x2 as per usual, usual being vast majority don't use them at all, down the proverbial.

How do QF offer upgrades? For free? Tell me how again.

Yes I would not have used them otherwise and they would've just expired in January.

Surprise work trip to Canberra early Nov booked in choice so used all 4 to upgrade each way. MEL - CBR so almost pointless but as still...got to use them!
