Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

To be honest, its a matter of time before Australia also opens up, Australia is already being mocked as 'prison island' and there will be pressure to open up in time for Christmas especially if other countries open.

Christmas is peak holiday period

Just need permission to leave Australia, then ....

Agree. There's been a lot of attention on the legality of internal state borders... I think the international travel ban is truly on shaky ground. There doesn't seem to be any valid reason to ban travel, at least to accepted countries with low covid rates.

It’s not just Australians in Australia who are unable to leave their country. My cousin in law is currently working in Rome in a Diplomatic role. They (herself, husband and young son) are not currently allowed to leave Italy whilst the ban on outward travel exists in Australia.

As predicted (from SMH daily blog)

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said it is likely South Australia and NSW will be the first states to benefit from the travel bubble with New Zealand which is currently in the works.

"For states who still have borders up and are insisting on quarantine for people, say, in Sydney to go to Brisbane, we can't have people from New Zealand coming in and taking up those [hotel quarantine] places for Australians coming home [from overseas]," he said.

More good news :)

Shows what can happen if a) the government controls the narrative and can make decisions based on science rather than tabloid media pressure and b) you don't have to face an election for 5 years, and c) you are effectively a one party state (see a).

But maybe there is hope for Qld after the election.

OT but the recent Singapore election saw the highest number of opposition candidates elected in their own right... The government no longer has to appoint as many "best losers" to parliament (NCMPs).

And in further off topic - Malaysia seems to have become an actual deomcracy recently.

Out of interest what is the basis for that? Italy has no outgoing restrictions that I'm aware of.

I’m not privy to the exact wording of the restriction but apparently it’s linked to the fact that as Diplomats they are effectively under Australia’s “rule”. Their apartment in Rome is considered Australian territory and therefore if appropriate Italian Police would require Embassy permission to enter. You are right, any non-diplomatic Australians in Italy have no restrictions other than Italian imposed. They are hoping the restriction will be lifted in time for a Christmas road trip.

Good luck on that one! I'm just biding my time waiting till mid December to start dealing with having to cancel our first trip down to Australia for Christmas since I moved to the UK a decade ago. Ho hum.

Scott Morrison says New Zealand travellers will be able to visit 'very soon'

Australia will open its border with New Zealand “very soon”, Scott Morrison has said.

The prime minister told Adelaide radio station 5AA on Thursday that New Zealanders will soon be allowed to fly into Australia with no requirement to complete a two-week quarantine, but said New Zealand was unlikely to reciprocate immediately.

“We’ll be able to move on that very soon,” he said. “New Zealanders being able to travel to Australia – that’s good for Australian tourism.”

Morrison said this would also help ease pressure on the international hotel quarantine system that has meant thousands of Australians trapped overseas are unable to return.

“[It] frees up more places for Australians to come home,” he said.

The prime minister said South Australia and New South Wales would be the first to benefit from new Kiwi travellers, suggesting states insisting on quarantine for domestic travel would not be included in the bubble at all.

South Australia is being let into the bubble because the Feds have now approved the arrival of 300 international students here. 😡. Meanwhile Aussies are stranded overseas. 💰💰💰

Looks like Scomo has found a power that the states can't control. He can give, and he can take away, international travel.

So that means no trips to Bali for people from Perth... forever apparently.

There needs to be consequences for any unnecessary decisions that are being made and WA people love their weekends in Bali.

Shouldn't logic dictate Victoria also be included in the scheme too? If there's no need for arriving passengers to quarantine, there's no need to wait for recommendations of the inquiry into how to handle arriving international passengers in quarantine.

I guess until the lockdown is lifted, there willl be no welcoming of visitors from NZ, but there could be Australians in NZ wanting to return home to Victoria.

We actually don’t know if his suspension of international travel is lawful... no one seems interested to contest it yet.

Dunno if states can be discriminated against... you’d have to look at the constitution.
