Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Forget us wanting to visit oversea's relatives or get away for a break, not allowing anyone in (aside from returning Aussies) is crippling our way of life:

*No doctors/nurses arriving which strains hospitals to breaking point.
*No farming workers which leaves dead fruit and crops, causing farmers to go broke.
*No backpackers to to do housekeeping/cook/clean hotels, so hoteliers can't open fully nor keep up with domestic needs.

This doesn't even touch on loss of income for tourism operators.
None of the Health Departments I'm engaged with have any issues with sourcing doctors and nurses from overseas. They are allowed under PMSOL exemptions.

Similarly, workers under the Seasonal Worker Program and Pacific Labour Scheme are also allowed.

Yawn I know.

The government, CHO’s and media have unfortunately drummed into the population that all the vaccines have to be 100% perfect which of course is impossible.

People pop pills every day and have adverse reactions far higher than what we are seeing so far and they don’t even read the label or indication for use.

But suddenly everyone is a medical expert and thinks they are qualified to judge these things. Plus news is scarce so beat up a deadly vaccine story to keep your ratings up...
The chance of winning the lottery is a million million times less likely than the adverse effects of vaccines, but people and the media keep promoting these.

How do you tell people with a straight face that there is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC
and not vaccinating every bugger that wants it because of a 1 in a million chance is an abundance of caution, its sheer madness.

And do people think twice about popping a couple of these while they sit and wring their hands looking at 1 death per million vaccines

No one is forcing you to take a panadol if you want to leave the country :(

There is no perfect vaccine.
There is no perfect medication.

And more importantly there is no such thing as zero risk.!

Research has show we consistently underestimate everyday risks and overestimate less commonly faced, but well publicised risks.

Illustrating this, I'm sick of explaining to various (non Australians) I work with that no I am not scared of going into the ocean in Australia because of sharks, and that drowning is a far greater risk when going for a swim in the sea than sharks, particularly if going in for a quick dip rather than spending all day in the sea surfing.

I know its daily mail but good that media is starting to put pressure.

Once the rest of the world starts travelling, there will be immense media pressure day after day to open up

Very written for local audience.

Australia are not a global embarrassment at all. No one is looking at Australia particularly closely, if at all. No one outside Australia (who doesn't have connections to Australia) actually cares what Australia is doing regarding vaccines and frankly is not even on the radar of other countries who have more than enough of their own problems to deal with.

The only thing we hear about Australia, outside Australia (i.e. if you're not actively looking at Australian media) is that it and NZ are existing in a parallel universe where people are partying and carrying on like there is no tomorrow. Attending sporting events, attending concerts and theatre, filling pubs etc etc etc. It's easy to forget that amidst the hue and cry of vaccines, and excluding international travel, is that life is pretty damn normal in a lot of Australia, and it is not in most of the rest of the world.

The big travesty is that the government doesn't give damn about reuniting families, and has quarantine capacity, 1/2 the capacity of NZ on a per capita basis, and 1/4 that of Singapore, two countries who have also successfully avoided significant community spread of the virus.

Of course, in 6 months or 12 months time that may be very different!

And I'd like to keep it that way, but it seems some (in the community and elsewhere) are proposing actions that would put it at some risk.

Anyone remember Victoria's recent little outbreak? Couldn't happen again, could it? But hey, let's not be risk averse, let's go for it....

do you classify people avoiding a vaccine with a 1 per million death rate as an abundance of caution or maintaining a high risk approach?

All very easy to say unless you're the unlucky person. The rate is much higher in the specific demographic(s) prone to this type of clotting.

Same for everytime you pull the car out the driveway, fine for most, terrible for the statistic, doesnt mean i'm going to cower in my home and never drive anywhere

Agree, but someone's appetite for risk is complex. Perhaps with a car we feel we have some control to avoid the risk (careful driving, follow posted signs and speed limits, no fatigue or intoxicating substances).

With the vaccine the only control is to take it, or not. Once you've been given it, no control over the outcome.

25 people once round

over 1,100 every year

i dont think its an understanding of risk i think its a massive overreaction and a blindness to the risks people run every day getting in the car / walking across a street / eating a meal cooked by someone else / getting stung by a bee / popping an ibuprofen / paracetamol / having a minor surgery performed / hell i'll bet there is a bunch of people who take would take an opiate if it was prescribed without a second thought and 1 in a million is no-where near that.

But that doesn't account for the issue of control. You can attempt to control the risk or outcomes for all the activities you mention. But not with the vaccine.

and what of the risk of an outbreak?
or the risk of not living in a free society without having to check in via an app or get a fine of a few thousand dollars?

or isnt covid a concern any more?
