Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

Confirmation they're fine, won't take effect until a few days from now.
Thankyou! They are so stressed about everyone here giving them advice. Except me. I've learnt to keep my mouth shut but they know they can contact me if they need to. Yesterday they shifted their departure date forward and son is missing the Test match in Adelaide and his Christmas work do so as not to risk being put into isolation.

Yes, I have a few trips over the next few weeks (if they even go ahead now) and the new requirements mean I miss out on several Christmas functions now.

Yet I’m quite sure not a single one of those people were “sick”. It’s a mild virus. I’ve had a sore throat this week which is no doubt worse than Covid. This hysteria needs to end.

It's not always a mild virus. My 40 year old school teacher cousin was extremely sick from it. She doesn't want to go back to teaching.

How bad can this Omicron really be? Look at the stats of South Africa with other similar sized countries ~60 million. Not to mention that South Africa is only 23.8% vaccinated and it is not killing that many people. I am just so sick of the media induced panicking!

First identified on 9 November, possibly hasn't had a chance to get out and about? Plus it's going in to the European/Northern winter environment. The demographics such as age and comorbidities might also be different between Africa and Europe?

Does anyone know the detail of how the 72 hours works. I am unsure whether I can transit overnight (tomorrow) then proceed to my booked accommodation (monday) in BNK. Overnighting at Rydges at SYD International and suspect it will be booked out when I arrive so can't extend.

Still not entirely clear but would imply that you can go all the way to your home?

Thanks for this, but it doesn't have answers for transit. Like what happens if my overnight accom is booked out after my overnight.

I can't go home, I live in Qld and will have no fixed address till Qld reopens. There are hundreds of us descending into SYD all the time.

some clarity might come out of Scomo's pressrr, starting about now. Now descending into SIN.

Does anyone know what is the go with self iso? I have my parents arriving (hopefully) this Friday. I assume I have to self isolate too if they are staying at my address?

Rydges is still showing availability for 28th to 2nd. Good Luck!

And occasionally 17 year olds die from infected toenails.

Unsure how being sick and not wanting to go back to teaching are connected.

As has been proven time and time again, in under 50s this virus is a non-event and certainly no worse than any other.

As long as your Parent have their own room and bathroom and do not leave their room I would guess you are not required to isolate as well.

.

Her symptoms were bad enough that she doesn't want to go back into the teaching environment with plenty of fairly close contact. She's doing it, but not happy. She also spread the virus to her elderly parents, who were also very sick.

For the people it does affect, it can do so quite severely.

Compared to being in hospital or on a ventilator, it seems an easy trade-off that those arriving from an area with a variant of concern isolate and protect others.

Yeah, I’ve known a number of people who didn’t think they’d survive and one didn’t.

While I agree many play up the disease it’s equally unhelpful to play down the risks in regards to have a rational informed conversation. I’m over the misinformation of both sides (on AFF and elsewhere).

Sounds more like a psychological problem that no doubt came about because of the stigma attached to the virus.

Compared to being in hospital or on a ventilator? Not going to happen. By the same level of hysteria, we should be banning cars.

I know of a few people who have caught Covid and the general story from everyone I have heard from is it takes months to get over even once no longer infectious.

I ma not interested in going OS until it is a little more stable with all the covid stuff and don't want to spend 2 weeks in ISO after or half way thru a trip... Bit of a budget/time killer

Omicron will out muscle Delta globally by March, but be only half as deadly, and be the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Still won't stop government power nor rabid media leading up to Christmas, and ruining many families Christmas plans domestically and internationally. 'Big Scary' will fade quickly though.

That's my hope at least.

14 days isolation after (each and every) flight has now been applied to international flight crew. Australian crew will be in permanent isolation. Don’t plan on flying QF any time soon.
This is what news.com.au reports:
*All flight crew who have been overseas during the 14-day period before their arrival in NSW must travel directly to their place of residence or accommodation and isolate for 14 days or until their departure on another flight that leaves Australia, consistent with the current rules for unvaccinated flight crew;

And only 4 weeks til Christmas? I can see quite a few sick days coming on (and many cancelled flights).

We can’t be far off the point now where every single person on earth has been “infected”.

The fact that South Africa managed to all but eliminate the virus is a good sign that it’s running out of people.
