Predictions of when international flights may resume/bans lifted

I'm starting to see flights available for booking now.

@Flashback - if arriving at LHR from Oz and booked on the same ticket to fly into Manchester, do you have to enter border control at LHR and get luggage then recheck in to the next flight or can you stay in a transit area and do border control at the final destination?

You need to do immigration at LHR.

*Note UK Immigration is not like AU you wont need to collect your bags and re-check them after going through scanners.

UK Immigration is just passport control and your bags will be checked through to final destination.

But customs at MAN (you won't see your bag in LHR).

Yes to all of this. But...... customs? Pretty much non-existent. If you want to engage with them though, often you have to pickup the phone on the wall to call them!

Yep in GLA the bags come off in the same carousel. They have some enclosed area for Int but the Int-Dom transfers rarely if ever go to that area IME.

Given that we have widespread community transmission of Delta in NSW in a highly vaccinated population there is no logical reason for any inbound international arrivals who are fully vaccinated with negative PCR to do anytime whatsoever in quarantine hotel or otherwise.

Monitoring the international situation we can alter this to conduct PCR tests on inbound arrivals for surveillance.

Realistically the average NSW citizen is more likely to contract Covid from a fellow citizen or visitor from Melbourne than they are from a vaccinated PCR negative international traveller.
 
I got excited when I saw the news that the borders would open up Nov 1. Then as you delve deeper into it - Scomo is saying that they "could". Literally three weeks away and we still have no details on anything.

When are we actually going to get details on how this works? How do the home quarantine arrangements actually work?

Totally agree, I think the problem is "sunk cost fallacy", Australian sacrificed a lot due to lockdowns and travel bans. A sudden change in such policy would lead to a lot of upset Australians.

I am really impressed with this guy! Imagine a pragmatic PM who sees the bigger picture and doesn't just fall back on "the health advice". I hope he can influence Anna. It's scary how people on her FB page are all about "Keep the borders closed" even after reaching 80% and scary that she might listen to them.

NSW is having a cabinet meeting later this week to discuss all this with the tourism minister. Home Quarantine trials are scheduled to finish end of October but they are looking to finalize the procedure by this week so that they can start actual home quarantine by Nov 1. They said they will remove all travel caps from Nov 1 as well.

I think they would finalize this by coming weekend and airlines start opening up bookings the following week.

Isn’t this the whole green edge bag tags for EU customs cleared luggage? I assume that has gone since Brexit…

Most flights into GLA up until brexit would have come from EU customs area destinations which would have explained the lack of interest.

Like anything if the flight is from a high risk destination for customs they’ll probably target that specific flight.

So if you joined a flight LHR-GLA off say QF1, then probably will not attract customs interest as stated by the OP.
 
Interesting, Id only read about scrapping of PER-LHR, guess we have to wait for the A380s to come back online to go via SIN, shame.

So given NT have not opened up to NSW, presumeably you need to stay on board while the plane refuels?

Darwin has an international departure lounge, post passport control. You will have access to that. It’s been a long time but from memory there’s a bar/cafe and a shop or two. You would not get access to the Qantas lounge as it’s the other side of the terminal.

What about on the way back (LHR-DRW-SYD)? I imagine they wont want arriving paasengers mixing with departing ones. An extra QF lounge specifically for arriving passengers connecting domestically per PER wouod be good.

I seriously doubt they are going to spend much money on something that may only get used until April so I wouldn’t get my hopes up of any significant works at DRW

It would be the same, as QF2 / QF10 is considered an international flight even for the domestic segment. You’ll do customs and immigration in SYD/MEL. I don’t see the issue with having international passengers mix for arriving and departing, but in any case they’d be time separated.

I assume they won’t open it for domestic bookings like they did pre covid.

I can’t see them building a new lounge just for a few months, there’s no way DRW makes sense on an ongoing basis. It will go back to Perth.
 
The NSW Premier referred to the NSW CHO as a public servant in the video clip above....pretty clear who is NOW calling the shots in NSW!....and if everything goes pear shaped as we exit lockdown, we also know where the buck stops!!
Are you suggesting unelected bureaucrats decide what we can & can’t do? Their job is to advise the elected officials and for the elected officials to balance competing objectives and arrive at a balanced decision

There is a lot of the honour system used in the UK. Same goes if you fly in from Ireland (Republic), you will have to proactively go to the immigration desk and get a visa, They probably won’t check otherwise.

Same deal with customs, if you have a solid white bag tag, nothing to stop them doing a random check on you.

I didn’t read it that way. Most people are cheering all the CHO’s are slowly fading away from memory, some just faster than others 😂

Do you expect that domestic flights will be allowable after an international arrival?
