Qantas adds Brisbane-Manila but suspends Sydney-Shanghai flights

Why aren't they trying Sydney or Brisbane to Taipei? China Airlines and Eva both seem to have healthy loading and prices.
OW partners first? They probably came to an agreement with CX and JL as well.

Also JL and CX have competitive products. You could even in theory get an F seat on SYD - HKG if you get the 777-300ER. Or maybe CX deploys the refurbished 777s on SYD -HKG and you get the new Aria suite.

I flew CX a few weeks ago on a QF revenue ticket, same problem.

Only way I got this solved was contact CX on WhatsApp. It will ask you a series of questions and you might need to fudge it to get to a human, otherwise you get the “contact your travel agent“ response, and QF can’t assist.

Once you get CX they’ll happily assign it to you.
Thanks for the reply,

tried Qantas call centre again got HBA got assigned some seats from their end further down the plane.

Went back to CX website and as I had an assigned seat I could now select any seat in the cabin so all good now.

I don’t think QF would be allowed to make an agreement of this nature with CX or JL without anti-trust immunity (which they do not have).

This. Hasn't QF applied for & been denied code-sharing ex-Australia by the ACCC with both JL and CX in the last few years?

They can and already do sell flights with CX codes. They don't need approval for that.

I recently booked SYD-HKG-ICN with QF and CX on their own codes, QF revenue ticket.

It’s not so much a bad name now but there are a stack of people I know who didn’t realise they were Taiwanese based.
If you mentioned CI to the average punter I’d be willing to bet many think it’s Chinese
Lots of people get Air China (CA) and China Airlines (CI) mixed up, often thinking they are both the same thing.

JL and QF used to codeshare on their non stop flights between AU and JP prior to the JL bankruptcy in 2010 with JL pulling out of all Australian routes other then NRT-SYD. The codeshares were halted during the bankruptcy process.
After GK started in 2012 and JL was relisted in 2013, the codeshares resumed, via SIN because the ACCC wouldn't let them do so on the non stop routes due to competition concerns (as they were the only airlines on the AU-JP route at the time).
When the JAL bankruptcy protection expired in 2019 and QF/JL tried to expand their codeshares and joint business beyond what they were currently allowed to do via their joint ownership of GK and the ACCC blocked it, even though NH had reentered the market and VA was due to enter.

This new video published today by a trip reporter (recorded very recently) says that his QF PVG-SYD flight was completely full!

Of course, it’s possible that this is a one-off or outlier but interesting nonetheless

The main issue I see why chinese people don't take their flight in preference of chinese airline is because Qantas have either no or very limited staff that can speak chinese on these flights. I was traveling to China for work in J and one of these flights I saw two elderly chinese couple in J got basically next to zero service because none of the flight attendant can speak chinese.

Look it could be the chinese speaking staff called in sick that day hence there is no one covering J.

Never flew into MNL at 1am before or left at 2.45am

A few question to those seasoned travellers to this hub:
1. Is the airport so busy that it is worth flying in early hours of the morning, whether or not you have connecting flights to domestic destinations?
2, Are the customs and immigration counters adequately staffed such that you actually don’t exchange your sleeping time standing in the queue for one or 2 open counters?
3. Are the Manila traffic so bad such that you are better off leaving the airport at 2-3am for the city rather than 5-6 am?

Otherwise i would have thought an arrival/departure time of 3/5am would have made much more sense.

But my experience with QF departure for international destinations from BNE hasn’t been great, so the 1 am arrival may be 1-2 hrs late anyway

If they treat a Chinese speaking J class pax like they don’t exist, it’s probably the best that they are shutting down the service. If there is a Chinese speaking FA in the Y cabin, the least the CSM can do is to ask this FA to speak to the pax a few times during the flight.

And if there is no Chinese speaking FA for a flight to China, they are so lucky nothing happened that they have to rely on a 3rd party (pax) to facilitate.

To be honest, I was surprised there was a full flight between PVG-SIN based on an online review

1. Flights from Au can rarely connect to domestic destinations same day. Arriving on QF19 or the PR flights required overnight hotel anyway. So, a 1am (3am AEST) arrival. For me I'd be wanting to grab a hotel and take a ~10am flight.

2. We don't know what BI will throw at it. They usually seem to be consistent having arrived into MNL at various times from BNE, SYD, HKG & SIN.

3. 2-3am would be so quiet on the roads. But 5-6 will still make it. 7-9 not so much fun.

I have a sense that QF has made the timing decision based on aircraft availability/utilisation rather than passenger convenience. That's why I'm interested to see the pricing and if that pricing will factor in the inconvenience. A few years ago Jetstar had SIN-CRK flights at like Arr 3am Dept 4:30am and I never took that flight.
