QANTAS announces direct BNE-ORD / BNE-SFO

“Expects to announce”. Well that means it has not been announced yet... and because it’s not directly from AJ, yes that also means that it is speculation at this point.

Very selective quoting - the full quote was “expect to announce details...”. If the deal goes ahead the routes are going to happen. It’s an official Qantas media release FFS. They can’t do a full announcement until the detail is officially approved - the routes are not in question.

My money is on us getting US flights with another airline. I’m not holding my breath on QF ever coming back :(

ADL will get and Asian destination before anything I would suspect. But doubt anything on the horizon unfortunately!

BNE and MEL are getting a lot of love at the moment with the 787 bases and new destinations

Of course nothing in life is certain, but BNE-ORD & PER-LHR require (i) a lot of premium traffic because QF has configured the aircraft capable of doing these routes as premium heavy and, therefore, (ii) feeder traffic from SYD and MEL where the bulk of premium traffic emanates, which will dry up once those people can go direct from MEL and SYD.

BNE and PER can only sustain a handful of destinations in their own right. Even fewer with premium-heavy aircraft. LHR and ORD are not two such destinations.

It is interesting, if it wasn't for the useless PER airport management they would also have Joburg and Paris on the way.

Interesting also to see VS sticking its old weary head into Perth - London, but would they have the right config to compete?

Chicago for QF is interesting, outside of the AA connections, there is ALOT of corporates there that would support a premium heavy service. Seattle as well - a lot of tech there, which would lend itself to a MEL direct flight being where a lot of tech is blossoming.

Brisbane to Chicago is about 100 miles shorter than Perth London. In reasonable weather I’d expect it to have no problem going to Chicago. The return would be more difficult, but again doable if the weather is benign.

Great news for Queenslanders.
ADL still treated like a leper by QF but oh well
Probably more so a reflection on BNE gaining a second (full size) runway soon and the lack of a curfew ;) plus doesn't ADL only have one terminal that is then partitioned to make space for international flights? That's not the case in BNE.

Yet other airlines such as QR, SQ, EK etc that are streets ahead of QF don’t have any such issues with ADL.

Shame its isnt SyD-ORD, i love Chicago (but only in late spring, summer and early autumn) and love to avoid LAX. For someone like me way more to do in Chicago than LA. Would beso nice not to have to fly AA from LAX if Chicago is my first orlast stop.

No. Hence why it is BNE-ORD. Once aircraft come online for Qantas that can do SYD-ORD and, for that matter, SYD-LHR, these stop-gap routes such as BNE-ORD and PER-LHR will be dropped.

With the arrival of Project Sunrise, Qantas will become even more SYD- and MEL-centric than it already is.

Bad news for BNE- and PER-based flyers.

By all reports, there is enough O&D traffic on PER-LHR for Qantas to sustain this route even after Project Sunrise. There is a large population of people from the UK living in Perth.

Something like that would likely be a termination due to insufficient crew hours to make an intermediate stop plus continue to ORD. Unless they have extra 787 crew on standby or avail at LAX /SFO

Crews are not on standby, nor are they necessarily available. To cater for this, you’d actually need to schedule a standby, and that would have the effect of increasing the duration of the LA/SFO slip. Much easier to do if it’s preplanned at roster build time.

Chicago was on the plans years, ago. One of the 747s in LA was supposed to go there.

Yes, unless a preplanned or prepositioned crew is at an intermediate stop, the flight will terminate wherever it lands.
Though if there was a “Polar Vortex” coming it would not make sense to want to go there in the first place.
