Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

It's a pity QF site does not provide fare class before the reservation is finalised. For what is worth there is a GreaseMonkey script that shows you fare class on QF site before the booking is finalised.
You don't need a script for this. ;) When making a booking, after you've selected your flights and you get to the second stage called 'Check', right-click any blank part of the page, click View page source and search for "CLASSES". The results indicate the fare bucket.

Incidentally, that is exactly what the script does ;-)

Last week I booked 2xJ tickets CBR-MEL-HKG-SYD-CBR with QF on QF metal. It cost 132,000 QFF points plus just over $420 in fees PER PASSENGER! Well over 50% of the fees were YQ (and labeled as such on the booking on Amadeus). And I thought YQ for flights to and from HKG were regulated? Even if it is, it apparently does not apply to QF! :-(
Qantas or any foreign airline are still allowed to charge fuel surcharge on award tickets to/from HKG but not as high if compared to say BKK/SIN.

If you used CX to/from HKG then I think fuel surcharges are neglibible.

Unfortunately I had some QFF points that were burning a virtual hole in my virtual wallet... I am seriously considering crediting to CX. I will still fly enough to maintain QF Plat, but any extra point earn will go towards other airlines.

I don't mean to be rude but 31 pages about the fee impost. How many times can we say the same thing over and over

How we spend (and accrue) our points is up to us, award tickets, upgrades or toasters - we are all in control of our own actions and can make that choice

keeping the thread alive lets the qantas reps see it. We might hope that with regular reporting back to management, they might actually have a think about it.

This is would be an easy vote winner for politicians. If airlines aren't interested in self regulation, perhaps time the government got involved.

You need to change your settings, I'm only seeing 8 pages ;)
And this is the 16th page for me! ;)

As mentioned good to see this thread on top regularly so Qantas lurkers can see we are aware of what is going on.

Just checked SIN to BNE in J, $391 SIN in taxes, which is now more than the same Y sale fare one way

Just booked 2x Z and 2x U seats on QF93 and 94 respectively.

$775 taxes on the Z seats, and $1130 for the U.

Ouch!

:(

You'll find BNE-SIN had less surcharges due to reductions in fuel surcharges a few months ago for tickets issued in Australia (but not those issued overseas). Even for SIN-BNE try calling and asking to issue the ticket Australia in AUD it may be cheaper even with a $60 phone booking fee.

Oh minor thing, please don't use the word taxes, the vast majority of the surcharges are not taxes. :-)

Yet the fuel surcharges to/from KUL are that much for the return. Don't quite understand why the difference.

So I went to book Vancouver to Brisbane in Y, one-way, the other day and given how expensive Qantas is for one-way flights I thought it might be a good use of points. Well what a beauty it was indeed - just not in a good way!!!

A classic award was 45k + CAN$439 in ridiculous Qantas fines and the revenue fare was CAN$653. Which delivers a truly awesome return of 0.48c/pt (yes that is correct!) - now remind me again why Qantas isn't my go to FF program anymore.....

As a reference, I think last time checked (which was a while ago) you could net 0.66c/pt on toasters.

I know this thread is mainly about fuel fines etc, but wanted to know if anyone had experience with the "Award assistance fee"

I'm looking to book 2 Iberia J class award seats from Madrid to Marrakesh, however Marrakesh isn't an option on the Qantas Website. I can find Casablanca but no Marrakesh.

So the only way to book these flights is to ring QF and make the booking with a consultant. Has anyone been able to get QF to waive the 6000 point per person "Award assistance fee" when the booking can not be made online?

Seems unfair to be slugged a fee when there is no other option.

Cheers

I've had it waived by asking nicely, pointing out that it cannot be done online. But it would depend on how nice the agent is feeling.... HUCA?
