Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

One way BNE-SIN-BKK on EK/3K in economy for 28,000 QFF points and only ~AUD163.

More than acceptable. Think 3K will take getting used to but beggars can't be choosers. If fuel surcharges were a little lower then it would be great.
Wouldn't complain at this price level. Exit row seats at around $30 isn't too ridiculous either, it's roughly the same distance as MEL-BNE.

That's not too bad. According to ITA matrix, genuine taxes are $89, which makes fuel surcharge $74. Of course if you book the other way around (BKK-SIN-BNE) overall surcharge is $222, of which genuine taxes are $61, which makes fuel surcharge for exact same sectors $161. More than double. This is what I really detest as an Asia based QFF member, this blatant ripoff for tickets issued outside Australia. {And to divorce any connection to fuel , as it takes less time I expect it takes less fuel to fly SIN to BNE than BNE to SIN}

Think a 2 hour flight would be easy to cope. Only concern would be on time performance. Will need to book a BKK-CNX flight on PG as separate ticket and don't want to leave too much time to sit around waiting in BKK.

3K was 90% on time for March, and rarely below 85% since the start of 2015. It's performing a lot better than their AU counterpart.

Yep, it's pretty absurd that you can fly CX, FRA-SYD via HKG for only 77'000 points and €120 booked through QF????

How did you get that on QF web site? I'm trying to price a DUS-MEL flight, but it only shows EK and QF flights for rewards; even multi city :-(

I nearly died last night when I booked 2 x one way awards BOS - PER on Emirates in J

The taxes were $1500 usd

I have collected 500k points in the last 2 months from credit cards etc and through the fee free first year and refunded annual fees it has cost me total $399 for these points and collected 12 Qantas club passes )

I am so used to VA rewards seats costing less than $80usd in J LAX - SYD. EY using velocity points from JFK was less than $100 from memory. CX via Alaska points was $117

My dilemma was I had specific dates end of October, from US to get home, not enough QFF points to complete the booking last week and on Monday waiting for the final transfer from AMEX which has been delayed....... Reward seats vanishing by the second in front of me.

That left me last night EK BOS-DXB-PER in J + $1500usd

I guess in the end I get 2 pax home on the day I want, in J and it cost me $1500usd. To make myself feel better I have to look at the last 2 years of points / reward seats and I am way in front ( at least that is what I tell myself and tell MRS )

Have you tried multi-city? Sometimes the Qantas website doesn't show me SYD-BKK availability via HKG but if I check SYD-HKG then HKG-BKK the availability is there. The points required are calculated correctly.

I did, but still nada :-( Does QF do married segments or I can search for each leg separately?

How about BNE / HNL / BNE QF points 140K for 2 x Y but wait for it ... fees and charges a whopping $854 :( well no thank you.

Especially when you can fly direct return with Hawaiian Airlines for (wait for it)..... $844 AUD !

So you're paying an extra $10 and about 70K QFF points to be crammed into a JQ 787 for the same cash price as a direct competitor .... slow clap Qantas slow clap

I do believe the 854 cash component was for 2 passengers return.

Whilst I agree with you that fees and charges of $425 are quite high (makes the fuel surcharge on each sector $170), it is always a bit disingenous to quote for 2 people (classic media tactic to portray things a certain way).

I'd be looking at such a redemption, only if the commercial fare was >$1300 or so.... trouble is when commercial fares are in that range, award availability is not there ...

We go to HNL as couple and to other holiday destinations, so quoted that way as one Y ticket can be purchased for near that amount, its wrong to charge such exorbitant fees. The best thing would be for the media to get hold and run with this impost, then some reduction may occur.

HNL is not only destination where this is an issue. SIN-MEL return is $450 AUD in taxes + 56,000 points or $618 for commercial fare so 56,000 points saves all of $168! And that's comparing QF to QF, not to HA or another substitute carrier.
Whilst this remains like this I will of course continue to avoid accruing QF points, other than trivial amounts to keep my account active.

I'm still accruing points near 400K now but cant see a way to use them internationally without paying these dam fees and charges in OZ, what a rort - other than flying out of ASIA to USA or Europe etc..

Did the Qantas survey today and noted my disapproval about fees etc.

Do you go to HKG often? Book award flights from there. In fact there/back the fuel surcharges are low.

I also did the survey today and said that I "strongly agreed" that the level of fees and charges discouraged me from using points.

I didn't mention that I only have 2,500 points as due to the high fees and taxes I no longer bother much about earning them :p (and the impossibility of using them for what I want blah blah /gets off high horse)

Just redeemed some BA points for QF 38 SIN-MEL tonight. 20,000 pts + $53 SGD. :) QF want 28,000 pts + $223 SGD. My first QF international flight in 2.5 years.

You're one step ahead of them, I think. The level of fees and charges discouraged you from earning points in the first place.
