Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

Was looking for a J or better seat BOS-SYD for next year and up popped 3 options, CX, QR, BA.

With CX my preferred carrier (even if QF was an option) I'm quite pleased with the taxes.

Yep, airlines are no longer allowed by regulatory authorities to charge fuel surcharge for flights into/out of HKG. As this is CX hub, they basically can't charge fuel surcharges any more. Kudos to HKG authorities.

A ray of hope.

Aha. That also explains why the taxes on my recent booking ex-SIN were so low - it was originally an itinerary booked ex-HKG before I called up to change it.

Might have to call Malcolm :(

Nice to see the post alive, we should keep hammering away to try and stop or reduce this impost

And don't forget MNL. A little out of the way but can be useful at times.

If this holds true, this might be a good way for everyone to dump their YQ. Issue the original ticket ex-HKG then drop the first segment.

That would likely trigger a re-price with the fare/taxes applicable at the new point of departure - so not sure how that would help?

What currency were your taxes charged in originally and post-change?

How was the initial booking created? Over the phone or online?

Pretty sure that the posted itinerary is an anomaly rather than the rule, as it is supposed to be repriced.

Checking QF award today BNE HNL BNE in Y for 2 charges were $850 plus 140k points what a joke can buy one ticket on Hawian for that.

Checking awards BKK-HKG for June and the taxes are THB735 of which THB700 is the departure tax.

That's what taxes on award flights should be like all the time.

No subtantial fuel fines are permitted by regulation for flights involving HKG ...

As opposed to THB5925 for BKK-SYD (of which 700 is departure tax) or net surcharge of ~$195 AUD. Contrast to SYD-BKK which is $160 which includes departure taxes of ~$80. And therefore net surcharge of ~$80.

I was just checking flights from Germany to Australia. As a reference, there is a Red-e-Deal from Germany, and the cheapest economy sale fare is about 1400 Euros. Qantas is asking for 250,000 points PLUS 950+ Euros for J and 120,000 PLUS 540 Euros for economy. I found myself shouting "you're f$%&ing kidding me!" Enough said, I thought!

Yep, it's pretty absurd that you can fly CX, FRA-SYD via HKG for only 77'000 points and €120 booked through QF????

One way BNE-SIN-BKK on EK/3K in economy for 28,000 QFF points and only ~AUD163.

More than acceptable. Think 3K will take getting used to but beggars can't be choosers. If fuel surcharges were a little lower then it would be great.

And I guess most of that is EK's YQ.
