Qantas Award Charges Outrageous

It varies, but basically that's how Qantas show YQ.

Still doesn't make sense since JL only charge $4.20 for their YQ (which is published on their site). So how does QF charge YQ when you're travelling on JL metal???

They just do! JL see none of it.

unless JL charges that amount but includes it in their ticket price normally? like QF does now?

Well if that's the case, it only come into effect about a week ago (around the same time that QF brought JL awards online). I highly doubt it.

In that case I'd question whether QF actually has the right contractual right to charge that amount?

IIRC the FF terms and conditions say qantas can add taxes, fees and carrier imposed charges. If JL (the carrier) doesn't charge it, on what basis is QF passing it on?

From the other thread and from another poster:

That is actually incorrect. JL has been charging fuel fines on AU-JP flights since last year. It used to be 42 AUD per AU-JP flight, and is now 83 AUD.

Since JL bookings weren't possible online previously, unless you had access to the PNR or the ticketing data, you wouldn't have realised that JL were indeed charging such a fuel fine.

See JL fare rules:

Code:
  ORIGINATING AUSTRALIA -
IF THE FARE COMPONENT INCLUDES TRAVEL BETWEEN AUSTRALIA
  AND JAPAN ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
        ANY JL FLIGHT
      FOR TICKETING ON/BEFORE 31JAN 18
A FUEL SURCHARGE OF AUD 42.00 PER DIRECTION WILL BE
        ADDED TO THE APPLICABLE FARE.
      AND - FOR TICKETING ON/AFTER 01FEB 18
A FUEL SURCHARGE OF AUD 83.00 PER DIRECTION WILL BE
        ADDED TO THE APPLICABLE FARE.

The above rules apply to all JL commercial fares in all classes. QF is simply passing the charge on from JL.

That's exactly what I am wondering. It looks super dodgy to me...
I have been led to believe that carriers do not pass on collected fuel surcharges to operating carrier.

I guess QF's agreement with AA is different.

QF BNE-HKG 28,000 points + ~$163.

CX BNE-HKG 35,000 points + ~$177.

Why the difference in surcharges? Does CX have a fuel surcharge on this leg?

Oh how QF love to gouge!

Yes, CX does have YQ on the leg, it's something like $90 (you can find the exact rate on their website).

CX fuel fines are the same across all cabins. QF however differentiate between cabins for their fuel fines. For Y, that means the QF surcharge is less than the CX one. However for J, the CX one is less than the QF one.

Why is flying CX $14 more expensive than flying QF. It's already more points.

Also does CX have fuel surcharges for this award? I seem to recall flights to/from HKG had reduced fuel surcharges.

I thought madrooster's post was pretty explanatory.

Anyhow, it is because CX charge the same fuel surcharges irrespective of the cabin, hence flying QF having cheaper surcharges. And CX is a partner airline, hence the more points required.

This is only the case if a flight is ticketed in HKG.

CX have publish their fuel surcharges here Fuel surcharge updates, for future reference .

We are doing HKG/JFK/HKG in J x 2 CX a 16 hour flight fees are a mere total of $197 - Qantas SYD/LAX/SYD in J for two $1800!, its dam wrong and should be addressed.

I'm still confused.

I am referring to economy. CX charges around $90 for SYD-HKG but Qantas in their wisdom decide to charge ~$177 for this same flight which is more expensive than their own flight on the route? Apologies but this makes no sense. Shouldn't Qantas just pass on CX fuel surcharges on the route ala USA internal flights?

Qantas sent me a "What do you think" survey yesterday. Fuel surcharges were my main focus. I gave them 0 rating and 2 ratings for their program but they don't bother listening to feedback.

The surcharges charged by QF are not only for fuel, you have to add in the airport taxes etc.

CX charges the same fuel charges irrespective of cabin, QF charges more for flights in J/F & less for flights in Y. This is the reason the QF flight is cheaper once you add in the airport taxes, which are exactly the same for both redemption's.
