Qantas Business Class meals & menus

One turnback is all it takes.
Fully agree - and it is so frustrating when in J and Y are allowed into the area.
You pay for Y you STAY in Y !!!!
Who do these people think they are as an announcement is made by the CSM to all passengers regarding toilet location.
This IMO is wilfully disobeying a FA which should be taken seriously and treated the same as not complying with airline staff directives. (with consequences in line with this determination)
Qantas need to put a stop to this and train their staff accordingly.

I'm not sure discussing the lav situation and use in a thread about FOOD is the most appropriate thing... :p

but I have seen once or twice on 737's push back from CSM's or FA's to Y pax coming through to J to use the lav. Usually though they just let it go. Honestly it doesn't bother me hugely tbh but I do notice and think yeah.. you heard where the Y lavs are dude.....

Couldn’t agree more, likewise the priority boarding which is close to 100% of times totally messed up by Qantas staff but could be SO easy. Yes, I’d like more meal variety and proper champagne on Domestic. Yes, the lounge in Auckland is an absolute disgrace. But I understand that these are all cost issues. However, training staff to turn the cattle from Why around or letting the riff raff wait while the priority lane boards first- these things are simple, easy, close to free (besides maybe some tiny amount incremental training capacity). Easy wins.

And now back to topic, I agree we’ve side-tracked a little here:

SYD-AKL, QF145, “lunch” service:

Had “only” one meal at the Flounge as renovation work means currently no fritters, no omelettes, no pancakes in Sydney. Got a double (quadruple) serve of Eggs Benedict instead :p

At the gate, priority boarding was completely turned obsolete by staff just boarding both lines at the same time AND not even bothering to reject any idiot from Economy who conveniently plays “too stupid” to understand the announcements. And no, they spoke perfect English, those  who pushed into the priority line in front of me, had Bronze status on their boarding passes and headed to the back of the plane where they belong. But hey, the usual.

Plane itself was the standard 737 so meh. I was in 2F which was good enough and champagne was offered as soon as all the people had entered the plane. We must have had strong tail winds as flight time was announced to be less than 2 and a half hours which was the fastest I’ve ever made it over the ditch I think. To my disappointment, they’re STILL serving the menus from September last year and this was the fourth time I had the same. Zucchini soup was the easy choice for starter as the other option was smoked trout and I’m allergic to fish. The trout didn’t look too appetising either and my soup tasted very bland which might in part be due to the fact that I have a little sniffle cold at the moment.

I had chosen the Asian style chicken this time because had the pasta with pork ragout at least three times before (the full menu is posted on one of my previous reviews so not posting it again). I regretted the choice instantly- while the overall taste was pretty “exotic Asian”, the chicken was dry even though the skin was on and it was not the best cut either. The shiitake mushrooms were hardly visible in between all the steamed Asian greens (yuck) and, worse even, all the celery (double yuck). Also far too much rice which I hardly ate anything from. If I want unnecessary carbs, then it’s in the shape of alcoholic beverages and I consumed plenty of those ;) Several people around me had the same and I saw plenty of half filled plates going back (same with the fish starter beforehand, actually).

Service was veeeery slow to begin with which isn’t surprising with only one single person doing all the food prep and service for the entire J cabin. This wasn’t helped by a super needy and annoying Indian couple in row 3 who seemed to think they’re the only guests in Business class and hence kept pinging the poor crew member on a near-constant basis for all sorts of stuff which delayed even further.

When the mains were finally cleared, we were already well on our descent into Auckland so most people missed their deserts altogether. I managed to sneak in a cheeky Glenlivet and the ice cream (I’m not a fan of Maggie Beer but the ‘Burnt Fig’ flavour is intriguingly good). No time for cheese platter which would have been my first choice.

All in all an uneventful but perfectly fine flight. A bit more efficient service would have taken the stress out a little bit but I don’t hold that against the crew- they were all super stressed out the whole time and clearly tried their best. Needless to say, there was a constant flow of Economy pax queuing up for the front toilet and further causing hinderance to the already slow service but I leave it at that

I would not have come to this conclusion reading the rest of your post....

What more could have gone wrong to drop from perfectly fine to just fine?

No PB on international flight, eight month old menu, bad food which most did not eat fully/at all, poor service which could not even be completed in time (>2 hours), Y pax constantly in the J cabin/toilet etc.

.... My QF flight crashed, plane was destroyed and I nearly died... Four stars!!!

Staff was friendly. Didn't make stupid not funny jokes that belong into Kindergarten rather than on an airplane like a certain competitor tends to do.

Also no pink and purple, the Red is very easy on the eye in comparison :p . Food was alright but not great, I grant you that but I'd still call it perfectly fine for such a short hop. Wines and even the champers were great, as always on Qantas.

If I compare this to a two hour flight with similar legacy carriers, I am thinking BA, LH or AA, oh wow, how good is Qantas compared to those!

FYI- I will check out both Air NZ and Virgin Pink over the next couple of weeks, just so that I can really judge on them. I will report on here once I've done it!

Fella with man bun walking up and down the first lounge this morning. Mrscove could have told him what she thought of the breakfast menu but didn’t.
THAT fella with his man bun? Oh dear, could I tell him things...

Was served recently on a lunchtime flight from SYD to MEL. A beef salad with pearl barley with salsa verde dressing (which was added by the CSM before being served).

A tasty and healthy (also filling) meal. The chardonnay was ok but the shiraz my wife had was amazing.

Much to our delight (and perhaps surprise to some posters here), the J menu on our flight from MEL to was dated April 2019. Interesting the menu is titled 'Australia to Asia' and covers flights to SIN (QF 1, 35, 37, 51 and 81), MNL (QF 19) and BKK (QF23).

Starter was the pork and shiitake dumplings with pickled cucumber and spicy black vinegar and sesame dressing. The dumpling had nice flavours and the vinegar had a good (spicy) kick to it. Served with the usual side salad and sourdough bread.

Chose the seared Humpty Doo barramundi with tamarind sauce, gai lan and jasmine rice as the main. An excellent main with the fish cooked well and the sauce tasty.

Dessert was the chocolate mousse with sour cherries and toasted almonds. It was surprising good as the sour cherries added a different flavour and the mousse was light and not overtly sweet.

164724

Was served a Japanese stir fried noodles with pork, shiitakes, sesame and gai lan as a refreshment prior to our arrival. It tasted fine but the portion was relatively small.

Sorry guys - does anyone know when the Sydney international business class lounge will finish the refurbishment? Has it even started yet

Zucchini tart/slice (described as quiche). ADL-MEL refreshment flight. Was very nice, although base a little soggy.

Other options were fruit salad or a toasted sandwich (turkey and cheese I think).

QF650 PER BNE 24th May dep 0635

Back on the early morning 738 to BNE. Good flight in 1C, very attentive crew.

The breakfast plate du jour in the PER lounge, croque madame - was actually very good and made up the the lack of pizza at this very early hour

166621
The menu on board

166622
The kale potion, again tasted better than it looks

166623
Mexican style eggs for main, surprisingly good. Washed down this the usual GB bubbles.

Another terrible menu for the overnight PER to MEL flight.

Crew at least were pretty good. Proactive offers of drinks etc. Cabin didn’t immediately go dark. But no breakfast offered best I could tell (through my dozing).

That's pretty lacklustre considering the prices QF charges for transcon J.
It’s a joke. But they get away with it. Cabins are usually full. Staff travelling, or (like me) pax who are transiting internationally. I’d love to know what the VA offering is like. Sadly the better QF network - and the lure of the F lounge - keeps me on these flights.
