0900 is the changeover time from breakfast. I wouldn't call it a full lunch like it used to be. It is a single tray service still, with bakery, main meal and cheese with a sweet item prior to landing. But that could change by February as well. Will the 0930 departure get a full lunch rather than the breakfast (plus later snack) that applies to earlier flights.
Maybe by Feb things will have improved, I have flown QF J 6 of 8 flights in the past week. The onboard catering was not flash and reminiscent of what was provided before JB decided to take on QF at their own game and forced the QF catering to step a notch. The other 2 flights were QF Y and VA J with the newly improved J snack box (not 2 minute noodles) for me the jury is still out on if the VA snack box was a better offering than the QF J service.I do look forward to food and wine on the flight and hope that COVID catering does not destroy the experience .
Travelled on the 490 today and the meal options were exactly the same. Very underwhelmed.Date: December 2020
Flight: QF490 MEL-SYD 1930 departure
Service: Dinner
Meal: The two dinner options were beef casserole w/ mash potato or a cheese plate, as pictured below. The casserole and mash was tasty but very sloppy, and the cheese plate was best described as lacklustre. The only bakery option was a cheese & garlic loaf which seems like cost-cutting on a wide body service (previously two options I believe?) but the bread exceeded expectations regardless.

The flight was operated by an A333 which had just come off PER-MEL, I wonder if the cheese plates were left overs from that leg? It was a fairly full cabin, I hope they didn't run out of casseroles because there's no way the cheese was a sufficient dinner.
So the 'slop' options have not changed as posted at 3071, the only other meal QF J I was offered was some type of chicken in black bean which I am sure was loaded in error or was a left over. I say this as the CSM offered me steak with mash and veg 'beef slop' I said I will just take what you have. To round out the last of the 6 QF J services the cheese offering sounds similar to what was posted by @MEL_Traveller at 3073 2 small bits of cheese, with the soft option being closer to firm and the firm option resembling a hard cheese that was now culturing mould.Travelled on the 490 today and the meal options were exactly the same. Very underwhelmed.
Please excuse the question but I am currently stuck over in NZ with the atrocious Economy or Economy choice and am dreaming of Qantas' Domestic business class... What the heck is wrong with their bar service? Do I have to brace myself for a choice of supermarket wine and water? Just want to make sure I adjust my expectations for once the "bubble" is finally in place...And an insufficient bar service.

So it's T-80 for me... The only other seat is 1A or 1B. Neither of which I want because that means staring awkwardly at the FAs during takeoff.
Really?!! I'm off to change my seat!1A/B is fine on a QF 737, can't see the FAs as they are sitting behind the bulkhead Infront of you. 1C is the awkward seat!
The FA cannot see any of the A seats during take off or landing. If you like the window 1A is probably the best bet as this is normally the first seat for the food offering. On occasion you may come across a CSM who starts from the other side. @sudoer I would suggested that 1D awkward seat.So it's T-80 for me... The only other seat is 1A or 1B. Neither of which I want because that means staring awkwardly at the FAs during takeoff. Looks like I'm stuck in 3A and hoping there's something suitable for my allergies. And before anyone says "special meal", the only choice would be vegetarian, and I'm buggered if I'm eating THAT!
On a 737 1C is my preferred and when booking a flight if 1C is not available I do get annoyed that some other P1 or CL has got in first.1C/D on a 737 is the best part of the plane!
I’ve found trying to add a special meal request via MMB in the past couple of months won’t work.I'm allergic to fish/seafood, shouldn't be eating things like peas and lentils, lactose intolerant and not keen on pork. But other than that, all okay, hahaha. This used to be never a problem, but more recently, the choice has sometimes been fish and something else, and I do not want the fish. Usually bingbonging the FA in Y and telling them solves the problem, but in J, they don't seem to care. (and yes, I would prefer row 2 as well, but not available at all!!!)
ETA: I went to check; it still says special meals not available. But unless I'm on an Asian airline I generally find it's better to take my chances.
