Qantas Business Class meals & menus

Hi all - flying QF764 (PER-MEL Redeye) next week in J and was hoping to get a bit of a heads up on what to expect catering wise. I have had a dig around the forums and can’t find anything conclusive.
I’ll post whatever it is that is offered on this thread along with the J meal offered on QF171 to Wellington. If anyone has flown a transcon red eye recently I would appreciate any info
Cheers!

PER-MEL redeyes are barely over 3.5 hours.

If I had to fathom a guess, expect maybe one option to be a toasted panini and another to be a soup. Served with a sweet of some kind and usual bakery offering.

No breakfast offering, but if you ask the FA politely, you might be able to ask them to serve the meal close to landing rather than after take off. Given the timing of the flight, it's probably next to no difference.

If sleep is your objective, you're probably better eating substantially in the lounge and then forgoing whatever is on offer on board (let the FA/CSM know) - hit the hay as soon as possible, it is literally not a lot of time at all.

In any case, you can go into your eligible lounge on arrival for breakfast. One of the perks for taking that flight. Even if travelling with checked luggage, there’s time to scoff down some scrambled eggs!

Concur.

Plenty of fresh pizzas will be being cooked almost right up till boarding, and that ~3:30hr flight time Eastbound makes everything very rushed for the FA's

Thanks guys good insight - sounds like the best bet is to give the pizza oven a workout preflight then crash out on board 🤣

A few things worth considering on this redeye:
  • The block time (gate to gate) is 3h 35min. Pretty short, and then...
  • You can't recline before the seat belt sign comes on. Neither when you're about to land. Sure, 737s don't have supreme recline in J, but... advantage to those who can fall asleep in a comfy office chair.
  • Noises will include the usual pre takeoff affairs (including safety video), announcement when the seat belt sign is switched off, captain's report, prelanding reports and PAs (gotta love it when the captain gives their PA and starts with, "Good morning passengers, this is your captain speaking, I trust you've been able to get some rest...")... then the clacking of the catering trolley and CSM offering anyone awake a meal...
  • Tailwinds typical of West-East travel can cut the time in the air down even further.
PER-MEL is one of, if not the, most blistering redeyes, certainly within Australia (perhaps one of those ex-DRW ones might be a contender too). I hope you're not doing anything too important upon landing! Food onboard certainly means very little on such a flight, unless you are truly time poor, famished or maybe you've decided to power on without sleeping (maybe suits someone who's just got out of the clubs or pub from the city and heading right over to MEL then crashing out).

I suppose you could use the recline pre-set position that is allowed for take-off and landing though.

Thanks for the info - It’s definitely going to be a very long night and then day - I am connecting onto QF171 Wellington so another 4ish hours in the air after the transiting for 3 hours in MEL.
I’ll play it by ear - worst case scenario I’ll arrive into Wellington tired and tipsy 😂

I’m not sure if that’s right. I’ve used the preset recline feature on the B787 before.
Staying OT a moment, supposedly it's not been certified for the 789... only the 332/333. Not even certain it's certified on the 388, as we got a talking to by the crew heading up / back (can't recall) from SIN about using it, too. May have been an awareness thing on that occasion, though. Must be hard for the crew when the same seat/suite requires different permissions depending on what bird it's bolted to!

Did my usual Monday golden triangle and had a different rendition of cheese plate which I didn’t mind…different cheeses and accompaniments but wasn’t the ploughmans plate or cheese plate so maybe this is the new norm.

Looks a bit sad to be honest if that is meant to be the main affair
