Qantas Business Class meals & menus

QF59 (SYD-HND) early May
PBD served, Kirin to start, supporting my destination country

Menu choices seemed enticing

As were the drinks
IMG_2392a.JPG

Starting off large I went the prawns

Nicely presented, the chorizo was good to this rednecks taste buds and was a good size.

The bread and leaves were forgettable. How one man made a reputation on slapping a few limp leaves in a bowl will forever amaze me. And the bread was moonlighting as a door stop between flights.

However, a poor choice was made with the main. Only seeing 'Bannockburn Chicken' and not 'broth' was a mistake
IMG_2405a.JPG

It was chicken-y tasting and good but not what I thought I'd get ("Hey CSM, the clown in
2K reckons he never ordered this and has sent it back").

Saving it all was this very excellent red which I ensured was consistent in quality through most of the bottle

Before dessert my wife realised she was not a Sake drinker, and air freighted her bottle to me. Now, I'm not a Sake drinker but this was good but so potent that I only did half a bottle. Which was probably a full 40 oz of Bourbon

And then dessert arrived. Purely for research purposes I chose both the chocolate cream and the cheese plate.IMG_2409a.JPGIMG_2411a.JPG

And that was that. All of it was very good, filling, good portion size for the flight and tasty.
I didn't do the arrival part as we were jumping straight on to a Finn air flight so wanted to keep some room for their offerings.

Personally not a fan of my chicken swimmING, so hopefully when I do MEL-NRT in the coming months the Beef Fillet will still be on the menu. The cheese platter also looked plentiful. Great review.

The Japanese set menu is the way to go for this flight

and slightly ironically, if not controversial. The Western option is the way to go on JL flights (at least in J). It’s almost like their core clientele are hankering for perfectly cooked steak and sides and they deliver.

The Japanese options can be a bit ho hum IMHO. Almost like they’ve gone out of their way to make it plain food (pun intended).

MEL-CGK late May, had eaten in F, but had a go anyway. Skipped desert and pre landing snack .

Mozzarella salad was nice. Fish was overcooked but sauce nice

BKK-SYD, June. Had over eaten on a solo lounge crawl in bkk (Cathay, emerites and Qatar) so skipped dinner service , breakfast frittata was bland will choose something else next time.

First time on the finnair operated service, must have been lots of status pax as my lowly plat status had me asked about meal choices 2nd last.

Mixed feelings about hard product and crew, certainly not the warmth of service I have usually observed.

Menus only

Syd-Mel yesterday,

Options ham and cheese croissant, corn fritters, granola (I think)

Chose fritters, were a bit stodgy, could not finish. Seatmate smashed the ham and cheese croissant so must have been tasty pastry was Apple something, quite good.

Slightly OT :

My theory is that the the departure airport determines your food choice, because the chefs at the airtend to be more skillled with the local dishes.

- Fights out of Oz mean you choose a western meal.
- Flights out of Japan (especially on JL) means you choose the Japanese option
- Flights out of SIN (especially on SQ) means you choose the noodles or Nasi Lemak.

I am aware that others will have a different view !

Back OT now.

But I want the chopsticks holder crane.

I liked the hard product (both seat and toilets with a bit more space) but agree about the crew. Give me the QF crew of the AY crew any day of the week.

I think there are some exceptions… for example as mentioned earlier… the steaks on japanese and korean carriers ex Japan and Korea are exceptional. And you prolly want to avoid the Singaporean chicken rice ex SIN. Not good by all accounts!

And i dunno about Oz and western food. Is that our cuisine?? :D

It's only 13.8% alcohol, but Qantas has (unsurprisingly) selected the cheapest and nastiest sake at $3.22 RRP per 300ml bottle, so it's understandable you thought you were drinking paint stripper.

Why can't Qantas manage an entree or apetiser on a 14 hour flight? Seriously deficient. And that mid-flight menu is not particulary attractive in case you go to sleep on boarding... I thought they were going improve their inflight dining...

I agree the mid-flight options should be more plentiful.

But who really needs at appetiser at 1am LAX time?

In the past there was an express option, maybe that’s the go - give those who need it a slow meal with all the accoutrements - and a dual course for those who are tired and filled themselves with squid in the lounge.

I guess it’s hard to fight QF’s desire to shave $2.50 off the cost of serving passengers who paid $10k.

Everyone is different. For $10k, why can’t QF do dining on demand? What else do cabin staff have to do for 14 hrs.

OOL-SYD: Pumpkin Free Dining

Thai style pork curry w/ coconut rice. Wine Shaw & Smith 2023 Sauv Blanc.

Other options were some sort of salad and a Beef Brisket

Despite the look, teally tasty. Pork pieces were cooked well and curry was good. Rice a good too.
