your disrespect and indifference to a 'sophisticated' silver service offering for your rather large airfare has me reaching for the sick bag. I know my imaginary doggy just loves a bit of 'Blues Clues'. The beef mince would do a treat for him

PS The American breakfast on the very delayed MEL - OOL FLIGHT last Week was a most fetching lunch. The sparkles were Grant Burgers. ....

It woulda been more enjoyable if I was eating it upside down while doing a hand-stand!

Next time, I'd like to pre-order a half eaten delicious Parmi. And a beer. After all, your team have gotten pretty good at servin up 'gruel on the bus'. To make sure you know what I mean, I've enclosed a pix,

While the J meals do leave some to be desired (there are exceptions, but rare) it's easy to forget that compared to large swathes of the world (eg North America, most of europe and probably elsewhere that I have no personal experience with) the meals on relatively short flights are pretty good compared to what is dished up (if anything) on comparable flights.

eg a LAX-SFO, comparable with say MEL-ADL/CBR, you're lucky to get a drink on UA/AA.
HEL-LHR, a 3 hour journey, I've had a BA breakfast that was about on par, maybe a little lamer, than your average QF offering.
intra europe I've had cold cuts and the like. Not bad, but not a hot option as on QF's short sectors.

Don't get me wrong - QF could do a LOT better, but the days of the "silver service" are long gone. I recall flying F (yes, 3 class F) on an Ansett 727 MEL-CBR (!) and getting a silver service afternoon tea which was hilariously lavish for a 45minute flight.

Yes, your asian carriers CX/MH/SQ etc can offer beter food options in premium cabins intra-asia, but they also have far lower costs relative.

You can fly 2 hours on AA or UA and barely rate a bag of chips.

(for the record I flew 4 QF J sectors over the weekend and did not partake in the food on any of them)

Very true, I still remember an AS flight in F from LAX-SEA, the meal was "french dip roll", basically a stale bread roll and some brown gravy to dunk it in.

Qantas certainly isn't as bad as some!

(Although that being said, they do charge as much or more for J MEL-PER as Y MEL-LHR, so you would think they could afford to spend a little bit more on catering).

Hardly anyone actually pays the "rack rate" for domestic J - even corporates paying for J get hefty discounts mostly.
I don't see the comparision as really useful. Very different routes, demand and supply, competition etc

It may be more relevant to post what VA serves on things like BNE-MEL or SYD-CNS to compare with QF IMHO.

Definitely not accepted - having done 14 trans cons in Nov/December, 8 on QF and 6 on VA - allbeit a small sample but have found VA budget cuts must have hit their catering too, anemic food poorly presented and fairly tasteless. Was much better even as recent as mid year

I don't fly VA so have to take others words for it I had heard the budget cuts made most dom flights poor in J except the transcons.. sad if it's hit there, but given the competition from QF (discussed here many times with evidence) it's not surprising they cut back... we all lose!

PER-SYD red-eye menu about a week ago. Expectations low and they were met.


I was pretty disappointed in the food and drink in the PER DOM J lounge - although service was good - so did ask for supper onboard when offered. No sign of the quiche (4th flight in a row it's been on the menu and I haven't been offered it) or the artisan bakery. Soup OK but the flatbread was excellent. Ice cream was a tub thankfully. The juice and croissant (which wasn't a croissant) were good in the morning.

Service on the flight was also good - they knew I was awake most of the flight and came round regularly.

SYD-PER 2pm flight. Disappointing menu - nothing looked that good, and despite having had an omelette on QF already that day. I selected that. In the end it was quite enjoyable, as was the prosciutto starter. Cheese plate was sadly lacking.
