Qantas Business Class meals & menus

QF1 SIN to MEL 27

Menu below.
I had the cheese, which was a hard cheese and a blue. I am not a fan of blue, which is always a risk, so got two servings in the end (after service for the second service). I much prefer a hard and soft cheese, with no blue.

Mid flight I had the Japanese meatballs, twice. The lime mayo I thought was bland, but the meatballs, accompanying cabbage greenery and sauce were lovely.

No pics as I didn’t actually eat - but for reference:
9:30 MEL-ADL flight options were mushroom and carrot healthy bowl, or a quiche or muffins. Seatmate had the bowl. Looked quite good but she barely touched it.

11:05 ADL-MEL options were a lamb sausage roll or healthy bowl (can’t remember contents).

MEL-AKL 18:55 737 flight, late Feb.

I've been pretty good at avoiding the 737s and 787 across the ditch the past year or so, but scheduling and short notice required both on my recent trip. Took the later evening flight over as it was cheaper and lightly loaded. Turned out to be a superb flight. Primarily because of Gabbie, the absolutely outstanding J cabin attendant. Helpful, personable, efficient, tireless. Very good all round. The CSM was largely absent (spending a good hour in the coughpit) but the cabins were only half full so I guess she wasn't needed.

Gabbie took most orders before take-off - all 3 courses, meal drink preferences, and post-departure drink requests. Menu:

IMG_1771.jpg

I requested the crab and then the pie, but asked if - after all orders were taken - there was any chance of swapping the crab for the Waldorf salad I'd prefer that. Gabbie indicated she'd see what she could do.

After drinks were served I heard the CSM discussing food options with the pilots on the intercom. At one point she asked Gabbie how many chicken salads she had left; she answered with 'one'. It was happily taken by the flight deck. A few minutes later Gabbie squatted down beside me and advised she had a Waldorf salad for me, but would I still like the crab too! Very nicely done.

IMG_1648.jpg

Thoroughly enjoyed the salad. And the pie was good too. Usual OK cheese to finish (no pic).

Very nice flight, with shadow holding next to me. Service from Gabbie really the standout, with regular drink offers and constant glancing into the cabin to check on things. Best I could tell she sat for about 10 minutes before descent to eat.

Only fail was absence of an amenity kit (not loaded from what I could gather).

QF144 AKL-SYD - 14:10 3 March, 787 service.

Really dislike this flight in comparison with the regular A330 services. Food is not plated. No drink service or opportunity to seek one (other than the call bell). Double catering means food is even older than usual and looks terrible. Stupid icy poles and standard cheese rather than NZ quality. And if you have a connecting flight ex-SYD same day (I did) you'll almost certainly get the same food options (I did).

On this particular flight the crew was pretty poor. Robotic and zero warmth or even common sense. As an example: no menus were on the seats or provided prior to the service; when my FA came round to me in 1A with the trolley she literally asked "what do you want?" -- I responded after a couple of seconds with "I have no idea what you have". At which point she read out the menu and then handed it to me. No apology or any recognition of the fail. Gave me my starter and moved on. (At least I heard her state the options to the next pax).

IMG_1709.jpg

Prosciutto was nice.

IMG_1708 (1).jpg

Chicken looked awful but it was an OK dish. The rice was bland but chicken was actually quite moist and a generous serve.

IMG_1710 (1).jpg

Didn't bother with a pic of the regular cheese.

Nothing bad, but avoid this flight if you can.

Sorry to go OT, but why is this 787-operated flight treated any differently to the other flights when it comes to catering?

Hopefully someone in the know will respond. But to me I can't see any valid reason so assume it is simple cost-cutting. Fewer options and not requiring dedicated crew member(s) in the galley putting the meals together on the plate.

I recall when the trans-Tasman menu and J serving style changed 3 or 4 years ago the service was very slow (on 737s and A330s) as the crews took quite a while to get used to it. (Several readily admitted it to me). That shouldn't be an issue for 787 crew. And while the cabin is bigger the similar length QF9/10 MEL-PER flights accommodate this style without issue in my experience.

It leaves 2:20pm and arrives 3:45pm so it is a "Snack Flight" perchance? (presumably, some bean counter inspired decision)

Was bemused yesterday to be on a refreshment flight BNE-MEL expecting the pathetic party pie offering yet it was not an option - just cheese box or sweet corn soup.

I enjoyed the Pino Griggio :)

Well- there seems to be a little schedule change as I have the 787 coming up on QF146 several times in May and June which is a 3:55 departure and 5:35 arrival. I BET ya that this later departure will not change the rather disappointing meal service offering in the slightest!

just cheese box

My experience with the cheese box offering is that most of the times, the cheese doesn't go well with the wine on offer. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the blue cheese, but even other cheeses in the box isn't to my liking!

No it's described as lunch and does have the same number of 'courses', plus salad and bread. Just fewer options for the main and (I suspect) some saving on staff.

I suspect there's "lunch 'a'", "lunch 'b' ", etc.

Last night QF38 economy "supper" service was more like a shorthaul domestic "lunch".
