Qantas Business Class meals & menus

With the redesign the J lounge got all the windows looking out to the tarmac. Previously both lounges had places where you could look out onto the tarmac.

This was my recollection too, QP was the eastern part of the space, J lounge western part. Now QP is southern (no views), and J lounge is northern (facing runway 27)

when we flew out of CBR on 15/7 latish I was pretty sure I saw the QP was open - not a lot of people in J lounge.

Both CBR J and QP were open today at about 4pm. J lounge was fairly quiet, maybe 30 odd pax total.

J lounge had rice and some minced meat sort of dish, and also tortillas so you could use the mince for tacos!

Yup, MEL dom J was created within the footprint of the QC back when J lounges were introduced. It was basically in the south west corner of the area, extending a bit (into a kind of L shape) where the now QC is. And yup, one entered the QC more or less where the current J lounge entry is and entered the J lounge about mid way through the space (and once through the door to J there was a service desk/staff to check eligibility to enter and all that, then one went into the J lounge area. IIRC to the left after entering was the buiffet area and bar tucked in back and to the left again of the buffet, with main seating area across to the right of the entry along the windows and central area, plus more seating across from the buffet and over from the bar.. Of course it was much smaller than the current J footprint.

Hands up all who remember peak time (eg >5pm Fridays) crush in there - both the bar traffic and packed to the gills....

In MEL (as like SYD, but SYD had much bigger area) QF were stymied by the available space in the leased(not owned) terminal so options were limited, which is why they set it up that way (IIRC), In SYD the huge QC was basically split in half with the CL in the middle.

in CBR with the entire terminal revamp there was the ability to basically start from scratch, so that lounge area is much better with separate lounges from inception.

No. That is not correct. You used to walk through the QP to get to the J lounge. You certainly do not walk through the J lounge to get to the QP lounge now.

So some of the QP is where the old QP was and some of the J lounge is where part of the old J lounge was.

Had a few QP users tailgate me into the old J Lounge only to be asked to return to the QP.

Butter chicken with rice, probably the most substantial J meal I've had on this route, and much better than my last Neil Perry butter chicken. Pax who declined were offered cheese & crackers.

I didn't catch the wine options but I think I overheard Sav Blanc & Temperanillo

Surprised they even had time to heat it up!

I'm surprised it was even offered. Not complaining (for the OP) but surely too early and too brief a route for 'dinner'? Is this normal that that route/time?
Maybe a catering mixup? There’d be some unhappy flyers to MEL or BNE with cheese and crackers for dinner…☹️

Menu itself (at least the first half) very similar to one's we've seen previously. Chicken salad ok, barra ok also. The biryani was quite tasty as was the tiramisu. I had the cheese for the dessert with the first meal which was a typical QF cheese plate.

Am on the 70 shortly so will post at least the menu from that flight.

The biryani looks great. I wish they'd cater these more interesting regional dishes on all intl J flights rather than limiting them to that region's routes.
Indeed it was and totally agree that it would be great if they did cater these dishes more widely. Challenge is, where do they stop as you can’t cater everything everywhere. I was tempted to go with the tikka for the first meal and in hindsight wish I had. Next time…

Of course, the same number of dishes loaded is fine, just switch it up with some variety instead of loading humpty doo barramundi on every. single. flight.

Indian dishes are especially good at meeting many different dietary requirements - can tick the "plant based dining" box!

I would think the majority of travellers particularly on international would be once or twice a year travellers, so changing up the menu regularly would not be seen as that important.

Personally I’d rather have another dinner than have breakfast, but I can’t see them catering to that.

I had dinner on a 17:05 flight SYD-CBR this week. So I’m not sure the meal times are that certain or strict at the moment. Double catering for such short sectors may also be a factor.

Only one option but it was a full dinner. The Parmesan chicken, which was pretty good.

Didn’t eat in the lounge beforehand (nothing appealed plus trying to avoid exposure as much as possible) so was very grateful to get a proper meal on the short sector and very early in the evening.

Bottled water offered pre-departure. Only a few of us in J so the team leader on the 717 service was able to serve us all comfortably and offer drink top-ups.

Good flight and again I think this is a genuine improvement on meals on the shorter CBR routes compared to recent pre-COVID times.

Well- you can, especially out of your home ports: Just look at the massive amount of different dishes on offer with certain quality airlines that offer a pre-booking meal service. I remember a few years ago on Thai, they even had some rather unusual German cuisine options out of Bangkok and, I must say, they weren't even butchered too much from the original.

Definitely flexibility on serving dinner dishes lately. I've had traditional 'dinner' dishes on 3.55pm departures and taking the 4.30pm more than my usual 5pm and same dishes (I.e. lamb, beef black bean, chicken in parmesan, butter chicken) have all appeared when it was more a snack service not long ago (toasted sandwich or salad).

That's really odd. Arrived on QF864 (1342). QP was open, J/CL lounge empty.
Agree with the dismal buffet selection. Staff were helping themselves and making toasties for lunch.
No specials were offered, staff too busy making their lunches.

I thought in the refurb they changed things and now 2 separate areas and entrances so don’t walk through QP to get to QJ now.
And funny when we flew out of CBR on 15/7 latish I was pretty sure I saw the QP was open - not a lot of people in J lounge.
Certainly is odd- we were there from about 1030-1130 and QP was definitely closed. And J lounge was packed

As a point of comparison. This was the meal in AA F (2 class) LAS - DCA yesterday. Beef short rib. Was delicious. Dessert options were ice-cream, cheese or something else. I was also able to pre-select my meal.

The plant based options looks amazing. Especially, the second mains section - that is a very traditional south indian style stew/curry. The plant based entree sounds a bit meh, but that's me.
