Qantas Cabin Baggage Survey Results Email

My last QF trip last week I noticed staff (at the gate) pulling people out of line and getting them to use the box and scales...by the unhappy looks they were made to check it in.
Wonder if this is in addition to the bag weighing they do before security during peak times, in airports such as SYD and BNE.

It was BNE, no checks before security...but I did online check in and bag drop so didnt see a human except at security.

I've definitely had my (standard sized) cabin bag weighed at premium entry before security at BNE on a weekday, around 5 - 5:30pm.

Perhaps unpopular opinion but my experience that day kind of put me off the concept. The person asked to weigh my cabin bag, then asked me to put my personal item on top of the cabin bag. Both together were over 10kg, I was asked to check in the cabin bag. The flight was then 1 hour delayed, and the bag took 30 mins to come out in SYD.

I have no issues if they want to enforce multiple bags (beyond 2) or out of proportion bags. However, inconsistent application of weight limits and what they consider a personal item adds to frustration when flights are delayed and you just want to get home after a week away for work.

"carry on is starting to get out of hand and can slow down the boarding process" ... !!

It has been out of hand for years now! It is the number 1 boarding delay / gripe IMO ... it is absolutely ridiculous the size and quantity of cough people jam in the lockers and under the seat.

I remember about 20 years ago when Sydney was the only place in Australia which had Krispy Kreme outlets. Sydney Airport had an outlet and some Victorian's would take boxes of the doughnuts back home as carry on. These boxes of donuts would take up room in the overhead luggage compartments. It got to a point where I just chucked my bag on top of the doughnut boxes so much was the frustration I had towards them.

Random carry-on limit checks just now for my imminent QF431 SYD>MEL. I have 2 bags but was within the limits for 1 up 1 down. Bloke who was checked in front of me was P1 (or at least had the latest P1 tags) and was trying to take over 20kgs as carry-on. Wasn’t happy when he was told it wasn’t happening.

Come to think of it, he also argued that he was flying in J (and was told in no uncertain terms that it didn’t matter). Here I am now sitting in J as we taxi to the runway, and old mate is nowhere to be seen… 🤔

You are both correct, I meant that, but phrased it incorrectly.

But what it does mean that the person "assisting" @kpro was likely incorrect.

There is no reference to weight at all in regards to "personal item"'s and if @kpro personal item was to be considered a second bag and the total weight of the two items was within 14Kg they still would have been in compliance.

Another reason why people try and carry so much it the time it takes to get the bag at the baggage carousel. I'm a premium flyer and my hold bag has "Premium", Priority Business" or Priority on them. I can GUARANTEE, a dollar to a dime that my bag WILL ALWAYS be in the last 10% on the carousel in Perth. If Qantas sped up the baggage collection then more would check in baggage. I land at 16:50-17:00 on a week day into Perth on a regular basis and my bag is last off, I'm now at the back of the Uber queue and have to wait about 45-50 mins to book an Uber. It's starting to $hit me off now

100% this! Often takes a good 30 minutes after landing in PER for the first bags to start coming out. Priority baggage on QF means nothing. Sort these two problems out and you'll find people much more willing to check bags.

With one up one down, QF should really revise such that the personal item (i.e. laptop bag or handbag or camera bag) is the second item and the two together should not exceed 14kg.

A regulation size carry on suitcase (or duffle or backpack or tote) and a smaller bag under your seat is enough to carry the essentials you may need in flight (and clothes for up to 4 nights away), and given checked bags are free on QF if you have more than this check it.
