Qantas Cash Card

Sounds like more angst and time wasting and I am over all these little complications in life so shall not take this up at this time..

Talking of exchange rate fluctuations, last time this promo ran I loaded exactly $1000 (into a USD account) and didn't get the points. When I queried why they stated I did not load $1000 equivalent (and did the calculation based on time of the money arriving in the account). I was able to disprove this with a bank statement but my story is to note that there seems to have been a slight fluctuation between me initiating the load and it actually getting there which meant I wasn't credited.

I did eventually get the points after arguing but if I was doing again would probably put in slightly over $1K to prevent this reoccurring.

When it is months apart, sure, but you could have walked down to the bank and got a cheaper cash rate at the shop front.

And then have to carry $5000 in cash around with me? Perhaps you are comfortable doing that, I am not.

Received the email as well.

Unfortunately 3000 QFF points realistically valued at no more than $30 is not worth buying by loading $1000 foreign currency at poor exchange and then stung with foreign currency transaction fees as well.

Don't forget overseas ATM fees also, and if you accidentally convert from AUD on the overseas ATM at even worse rates.

Other than ATM fees there aren't any foreign currency transaction fees. And foreign ATM fees are unavoidable on any card.

On my investigations the exchange rate is insignificantly different from other like FX purchases.

Compare this:

To this:

Looks like at least a 2% difference.

I don't usually have much trouble finding a Citi or HSBC ATM when OS, but they aren't on every street corner.

It would pay to check your bank's prepaid card rate also to compare.

Can someone compare what it would cost to load AUD1000 in Thai baht to the Qantas cash card and compare that to the rate on the 28 degree card?

My fiancee exchanged some AUD in Chiang Mai a couple of days ago and she got 25.2 but I reckon I could have got close to 25.5 in Pattaya. The 28 Degree card offers slightly less than what I could exchange for cash.

If Qantas cash card offered 1 baht less then that's a loss of ~AUD40. But I think 1 baht less is generous. Anyway 3000 QFF points are not worth AUD40 and if they were then surely I would want to buy them cheaper? Awards are too difficult to book and fuel surcharges too high.

I just talked to a Qantas rep and was told that a simple load of A$1000 is sufficient to become eligible for the 3,000 QFF points. I was told no currency transfer is needed. I'd still check that though, as I've been burnt before.

I guess you can always spend that grand in Australia, too.

Edit: Don't forget to register before loading the amount. ;)

The last time Qantas ran this promo, I loaded A$1000 and then converted it into Japanese yen. They didn't credit me with the points and when I called up, they refused to credit, saying that the promotion was specific in that a direct transfer into the foreign account was needed. I tried to reason with them that it was essentially the same as having directly transferring $1000 equivalent into a foreign account, but they did not budge... :(

I travel to NZ a lot.
But are they saying I have to put in Nzd$ in cash into my QCC to get the points.
As in load... into the foreign currency part of QCC.
Not load Aud$ then convert.
Thought the idea was to load Aud$ then convert to forex.
Can we take foreign currency to that bank QCC has links with, and then tell them we want to make a forex deposit! Not in Aud$ but in actual foreign currency.

Yes. The offer says to load "directly in foreign currency".

No.

So within my QCC account, ........
Ah, THINK I got the idea.
MUST use that LOAD BUTTON inside QCC account.
Not initiate it from Pay Anyone within my banks internet banking webpage.

The website lets you load in a foreign currency directly. Tell it what currency you want and how much and it gives you the AUD amount to pay. It's easy, even a pooch can do it.

Ah.
Noted.
When I have thousands of kibble or Aud$ and if the email comes again, I will see about that.
Dog bowl bit skint at the moment.

Just to clarify, those aren't even the right rates to use if you're comparing Citibank Plus exchange rates to Qantas Cash rates. Those Citibank rates are for wire transfers, cash exchanges, etc and aren't used for Citibank Plus ATM cash withdrawals/purchases using the card. The right rate to use to compare is even better than those on the Citibank website.

The right rates to compare against for using Citibank Plus(using Visa network) is: Exchange Rate Calculator | Visa USA

And for other cards that don't charge surcharge for foreign currency, 28degrees and Bankwest Platinum(using Mastercard network): https://www.mastercard.com/global/currencyconversion/

Simply follow my instructions and you won't have any issues.

To qualify, you need to do the following:
1. Log into your Qantas Cash Account
2. Click "Load Funds"
3. Select your preferred foreign currency
4. Enter an amount that is equal to $1000AUD
5. Hit "Load Now"
6. The system will provide you and email you loading instructions.
7. Wait 1 business day for your currency to appear in your account.

Easy :)

Somehow I think we have had this conversation before!!

Greetings all,
I am travelling to Macau for work this week, and am wondering if anyone has experience with the QCC and HKDs there. Normally, I see a combination of MOP and HKD being used in Macau, but am not sure if the HKD currency is going to work when I use the CC (will I get charged a currency conversion fee etc) or can mostly just ask to be billed in HKD?
Thanks for your response :-)

While no expert, I understood the service to use HKD if there's HKD in the account, otherwise it reverts to the default currency, and then anything left over in any other currency.

I tried to use the QCC in Macau while there in August 2014. I had HKD, USD and AUD available on the card. I was at the Venetian and asked to be charged in HKD which they assured me they could do. When I was presented with the CC docket it was in MOP and they told me they could not charge in HKD after all. I asked that the transaction be reversed and paid them in HKD cash, which they happily accepted. The transaction remained on my QCC account for about 3 weeks before the Venetian's failure to finalise the transaction caused it to lapse. During the intervening time it consumed all my AUD and part of my USD plus FX transaction fees. The balances reinstated and the fees reversed after the transaction lapsed. My advice would be to take HKD cash.
