Qantas Cash Issues

Thought you guys should be aware of an issue my colleague had with his qantas cash card in the USA in December. It was working fine on the first couple of days of the trip, but by mid trip it was useless, wouldn't work at all, despite plenty of cash on the card.

Upon calling QF yesterday he found out that because his status changed from Bronze to Silver to Gold over 8 days (US Status Run), each time a new card was issued, making his current card useless. This seems utterly ridiculous! Anyone else experienced this?

While utterly ridiculous, not entirely unexpected. I hope QF are able to rectify this.

Yes, had the same thing happen to me, a system not thought through from a frequent flyer perspective.

Well there goes my planned use of the card to store cash for my trip to China & HK in March/April. As I will not maintain my WP status this year and will drop to SG at the end of March there is no point in adding cash to my card if it is not going to work at the end of my trip. It is not something I would have considered happening. Not well thought out at all! I am becoming more and more cheesed off with QF as time goes on and I have always been a very loyal traveller for a long time, maybe not flying lots every year but choosing QF for all of my domestic and most of my international travel. Seriously considering changing.

Same here, went from Silver to Gold in the early days of cash card and even the service centre couldn't work out the problem until I happened to mention it. Took about 4 weeks until I got the new card and could use my money which I couldn't get access to while I was overseas on holiday

Exactly when you need the card - seems a pretty monumental design flaw to me.

Perhaps Qantas will stop issueing a different card. Just about everything is done electrically now so why do we need to have a card showing our status? Is there a situation where you need to show your card these days? I personally would be happy to stick with one card.

Or change the system so that it can support two or more cards, a card issued is valid until its expiry date in terms of Qantas Cash, is someone changes status, issue a new card that references the same account, after all you can have virtual cards that do that??

Firstly, I thought this thread was going to be about QF running out of cash to pay their suppliers, but it's a bit early for that.....

The QF Cash system should be much like when you order a replacement credit card. The old one continues to work until you activate the new one

Not that hard

Sorry to minimise the quote, however I'd be keen to follow this up with your colleague.

If possible, please send me a private message with the details as reference so I can investigate with the Qantas Cash team.

I'm sure we were told at the Rockpool lunch that the existing card would stay valid for a month after a status chamge to prevent this problem....

I think I read a few months ago about exactly this issue. Absurd if true.

I've just been travelling with both the QF and VA products and both worked well (despite ZAR not being a wallet currency). Notable that my VA status changed from Gold to Platinum at the start of the holiday but the gold VFF card continued to work the whole time. According to the blurb with my new card, once the new one is activated the balance transfers. Surely QF's would be similar?

The trick is getting the new card and then activating it when away, which is significant if the original card stops working as reported here.

One would think so, but alas, no

Cheers Red Roo. I'll speak with my colleague and then send you his number. He did speak with QF, and they confirmed there was an issue, and offered some compensation, so the issue in his mind is resolved, but the issue for all other frequent flyers certainly isn't.
