Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Flyerqf, it appears from Flightradar24.com - Live flight tracker! that A388 VH-OQF is operating QF12 that according to Qantas | Book airfares on Australia Pacific's Best Airline departed LAX 23 minutes late on Sunday 10 January at 2253 and is due in SYD five minutes late on Tuesday 12 at 0835.

FR24 also suggests that B744 VH-OEB is operating the following QF18 (also LAX - SYD) that the QF site claims departed at 0230 on Monday 11 and is due in SYD at 1135 on Tuesday 12, two hours and 20 minutes late.

Are you suggesting that FR24 is incorrect?

On Tuesday 12, QF2012, the 0655 from SYD to TMW and QF2180, the 0725 from SYD to MRZ are both cancelled.

There is only one other QF flight to MRZ tomorrow but that is not until 1710 in the afternoon, almost 10 hours later. Qantaslink's Sydney to Tamworth route has a much better frequency so one would hope that there are spare seats on later morning flights.

What happens to SYD - MRZ passengers? If they do not want to wait around until the afternoon flight (which may or may not have spare seats) are they flown to either TMW or ARM and then conveyed by bus or sent in taxi(s) across from Armidale or Tamworth to Moree (both 270 kilometres) or given or promised a refund and directed to www.nswtrainlink.info and told to enquire if there are spare seats on the 0930 hours Sydney Central to Moree Xplorer train that arrives Moree daily at 1800 hours?

awkwardpaws, the delayed QF73 appears to be B744 VH-OEJ that came in from HND this morning (11 January 2016) on QF26 and has therefore been in SYD all day.

As you may know, delays can occur for a multitude of reasons. As far as one can see, this is a 'discrete' (separate) delay: there is no obvious connection to a previous flight (unless a serious or time consuming maintenance problem was discovered upon or after arrival today.)

While this is subject to change, at this stage your QF17 on Wednesday 13 January looks to be formed by the arriving QF64 ex JNB, South Africa that is due in at 1540, which is normally sufficient time (fingers crossed) to operate your flight. The good thing (thus far) is that QF63 from SYD to JNB is forecast to only be ten minutes late into JNB tonight.

Thanks Melburnian1 for the detailed explanation :)

Either FR24 or flightaware is incorrect :)

One thing I omitted was that of course your QF17 is formed at this stage on Wednesday night by the QF63 that departs SYD tomorrow morning (Tuesday) for JNB and which then departs the latter on Tuesday night as QF64 for a Wednesday afternoon 1540 hours SYD timetabled arrival.

Apologies if I gave the impression that it was today's QF63 that was relevant to you. It is not: I was a day ahead of myself.

On Tuesday 12 January, QF81, the 1115 SYD to SIN is expected to depart at 1215 while QF2516, the 0615 early morning from BNE to MKY has been cancelled.

QF2390 from BNE to THG (not one of Australia's better known airports) is delayed in its departure from 1000 to 1045. QF2338, the 1135 BNE - GLT is cancelled.

UPDATE: The delayed QF81 did not depart SYD until 1247 with SIN arrival expected 80 minutes behind time at 1750 hours.\

QF2022 departed SYD 40 minutes late at 1250 for ARM, with arrival at 1357, 32 minutes late.

In yet another cancellation for Qantaslink today (which has been having a spate), the 1420 hours QF2172 from SYD to PQQ has been given the boot. So has QF2550 (1300 hours BNE to ROM.)

QF2579 from BNE to the western town of CTL is delayed from 1335 to a forecast 1430 in its departure. QF2006 from SYD to TMW departed 51 minutes late at 1616 hours.

QF2231 ex SYD to WGA is delayed a forecast 35 minutes until 1855 in departing.

QF17 from SYD to LAX, the B744 flight should depart at 1945 hours, 80 minutes late. However QF expects arrival to be only 55 minutes down at 1400 same day.

QF149 (1835 evening flight from SYD to AKL) is expected to depart half an hour behind time.

QF2019 from ARM to SYD on Wednesday 13 January has been delayed from an 0630 hours departure to at least 1031. QF2002 from SYD to TMW is expected to depart at 1200 rather than 0845 as a result. QF2003 from TMW is also delayed substantially departing, from 1010 to 1310 hours.

Qantaslink has had quite a few instances of severe late running or cancellations in the past two or three days.

QF1477, the 'high noon' from SYD to CBR is also cancelled.

QF512, the 0905 hours SYD to BNE is cancelled.

QF127, the 1135 SYD to HKG (B744 VH-OEF) took off at 1234 so it may be late into HKG although the QF website so far states only a minute late is its estimated arrival. FR24 gives a touchdown time of 1831, about 55 minutes behind time.

QF73 from SYD to SFO on Wednesday 13 January is expected to depart 90 minutes late at 1630 with same day arrival 75 minutes behind time at 1045.

QF27 from SYD to SCL departed 34 minutes late at 1324 but is not forecast to arrive until 1205, 45 minutes late. The return QF28 on 13 January will be late departing as a result.

Although QF10 has been punctual lately, this is not the case tonight. Yesterday (Tuesday 12 January), the flight departed LHR at 1154, arriving DXB at 2251, 24 minutes early. However it did not depart on Wednesday 13 until 0310 (two hours and 10 minutes late) and should arrive at 2320 hours tonight in MEL, two hours late.

The Wednesday 13 QF9 will therefore depart at about 0110 on Thursday 14 January with DXB arrival expected at around 0805, an hour and 35 minutes behind time, if there are no further unexpected delays. However due to the extra time now allowed compared with the previous timetable, LHR arrival may be fairly close to time.

QF2116 from SYD to CFS on 13 January did not depart until 45 minutes late at 1620, but arrival is forecast as less late at 33 minutes behind.

With the storms and winds in MEL late this afternoon and early evening, QF625 from BNE to MEL (the 1500 hours that took off more or less on time at 1517) is about to arrive at roughly 1902 (42 minutes late) with B738 VH-VXI having completed quite a 'nice looking' holding pattern.

QF1506 from HBA to MEL (the 1720 hours) took off very promptly at 1727 but is in a more southeasterly holding pattern with arrival expected at about 1907, 32 minutes behind time. B717 VH-YQV is the aircraft.

QF451 (B738 VH-VXT), QF453 (B738 Vh-VYH) and QF455 (A332 VH-EBC) ex SYD are others in holding patterns awaiting ATC clearance into MEL. At this stage these delays are far removed from the couple of hours a flight that BNE has experienced on at least two occasions within the past year due to heavy tropical rain, but they are nonetheless costly for the airlines because the SYD curfew imposes immovable time constraints for some rotations.

UPDATE: QF2286 from LST to MEL (Q400 VH-QOX) was shown as about 50 minutes late (arriving at about 1920) due to the above but was subsequently cancelled as was the return QF2289 (1910 hours MEL - LST.)

The Wednesday 13 January BNE to LAX QF15 departed one minute late at 1101 but diverted to HNL where it stopped from 0034 to 0220 before arriving in LAX at 0850 hours, two hours and 50 minutes late.

As a result QF11, normally formed by QF15 as both should be B744s, departed LAX at 1108 (B744 VH-OJT) and is due at JFK at 1855 hours, two hours and 25 minutes late. QF12 is expected to depart JFK for LAX at 2035 instead of 1800 on Wednesday 14 for a LAX arrival at 2325 instead of 2105. The Wednesday 14 2320 hours QF16 should then depart LAX at 0140 on Thursday for an 0930 hours arrival in BNE on Friday 15 January, two and a quarter hours late. QF15 on Friday morning ex BNE may therefore be late departing, although the QF website has yet to be altered in that regard.

QF12 is expected to depart LAX at 0025 on Thursday morning (an hour and 55 minutes late) but arrive SYD just an hour and 35 minutes late at 1005 on Friday morning, the 15th. QF18 appears to be unaffected, as do the two Melbourne-bound flights, QF94 and QF96.

While also not yet shown, the 1130 SYD to LAX QF11 will surely depart late on Friday 15 January if it is formed by the delayed arrival QF12.

A noxious smell in the cabin apparently (fixed on ground on HNL).

QF447 from SYD to MEL (B738 VH-VZS) took off at 1742 despite a departure time of 1600 hours. It should arrive at about 1900 hours, 85 minutes late.

QF536 is the 1605 hours SYD northbound to BNE. On Thursday 14 January it took off at 1552 with a 90 minute late arrival expected at 1805 hours, A332 VH-EBN being the conveyance.

QF569, the 1630 hours SYD to PER took off at 1832 and is due in the West at about 1925, an hour late. Aircraft is B738 VH-VXQ.

QF463 SYD-MEL has yet to board (6.30pm departure schedule) says 6.50pm board but not hopeful, weather closing in.....

I am hundreds of kilometres away but the BOM site doesn't look good in and around SYD (at least for transport operators - farmers and firefighters may have a different perspective.)

QF1, the 1645 SYD to DXB and LHR took off at 1840 so it is likely to be fairly late into DXB. Aircraft is A388 VH-OQA.

QF453, the 1700 SYD - MEL took off at 1852 (aircraft VH-XZK, a B738.) It is about 85 minutes late.

Was the airport 'closed' to either arrivals or departures for a short while (or longer), or have delays been at least partly due to luggage not being unloaded or loaded while it has been raining, or a runway closed?

Boarding now for a supposed 7.10pm departure (40 mins late)

On 14 January with the storms around SYD, QF73, the 1500 hours B744 to SFO departed at 1643. Arrival is expected at 1110 instead of 0930.

Earlier, the A388-operated QF11 departed 72 minutes behind time at 1242 but arrival should be only 20 minutes late.

QF147 from SYD to AKL was cancelled while QF149, the 1835 hours flight departed at 1946. Arrival should be at 0039 on Friday 16 January instead of 2345.

QF491, the 2030 hours SYD to MEL has also been given the order of the Royal boot.

On Thursday 14 January, B744 VH-OJU is about to arrive in SYD at about 2110 hours, three hours and 20 minutes late on QF28 ex SCL. Yesterday it had departed SCL 38 minutes late at 1413 hours but diverted to CHC where it spent from 1820 to 1932 hours this early evening.

This has delayed QF25 from SYD to HND by what www.qantas.com.au claims is half an hour to a revised 2200 hours departure.

I am happy to be corrected but turning around a B744 in 50 minutes would be impossible would it not? A more sensible claim might be of a 2240 - 2250 hours departure, which unless the flight has been granted a dispensation by the Federal Minister's delegate is perilously close to breaching the SYD 2300 hours curfew.

I think they have discretion to fly up to 4 flights after curfew if their are delays

Kefci2000, are you thinking of the 'early morning' (0500 - 0600 hours) limited number of dispensations granted for six months of the year when QF and BA flights want to arrive before 0600 hours?

There is no mention of anything else in this:

https://infrastructure.gov.au/aviat...ews/SydneyAirport/DispensationGuidelines.aspx

The QF website has now amended the delayed departure of QF25 from SYD to HND tonight (14 January) to read '2230.' Perhaps it reads AFF!

QF549 from BNE to SYD is in a holding pattern and likely to be at the gate at 2200, 120 minutes late for the patrons aboard A332 VH-EBR.

QF1556 from HBA to SYD took off at 1918, about an hour after it should have given its 1805 hours pushback time, but as an indication as to how the holding pattern has increased the flight time, it should be at the gate in SYD at about 2150, two hours late. B717 VH-YQS presumably needs quite a few thousand additional litres of 'juice' to be pumped in.

UPDATE: QF25 for HND took off from SYD at 2259, about 70 minutes late, so it just 'made' curfew.

On Friday 15 January, the A380 operating QF12 is expected to arrive in SYD ex LAX at 1110 instead of 0830. Some posts above, we discussed the late running connecting flight ex JFK.

QF2037, the 0630 from DBO to SYD is a Qantaslink cancellation. QF2202 from ABX to SYD is expected to depart an hour and 40 minutes late at 0810, arriving an hour and 35 minutes behind at 0915. On Thursday 14, QF2213, the 1530 SYD to ABX had departed at 1656, arriving ABX at 1820, an hour and 35 minutes late, while the later scheduled QF2217 arrived ABX 70 minutes late at 2120.

I assume that Qantaslink crew are based in SYD and overnight in Albury, so a minimum rest period is required. What is this for pilots of that grade and flight attendants? 12 hours from when they leave the plane to when they again board it?

QF127 from SYD to HKG is expected to depart at 1245, 80 minutes late.

QF2020, the 0810 from SYD to ARM is cancelled while QF2040 from SYD to the midwestern city of DBO is forecast to depart at 0955, an hour and 55 minutes late in yet more problems for Qantaslink.

QF2106, the 0815 hours from SYD to Toowoomba ('Brisbane West Wellcamp' - 'Brisbane West' being a silly description, even if geographically accurate - is cancelled while QF2106 from SYD to CFS is estimated to depart an hour late at 0930.

QF1471, the 0955 hours SYD to CBR is also cancelled.
