Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Saw this in a article.

Two international flights were diverted from Melbourne to Sydney on Friday morning after storms made it unsafe to land.
The pilots of United Airlines' long-haul flight UA98-99 from Los Angeles decided to fly to Sydney rather than remain in a holding pattern over Melbourne due to poor visibility.
Qantas flight QF94 from LA also diverted to Sydney, with landing delayed by a couple of hours.
Under protocol, airport ground crew and passengers are called off the tarmac if lightening strikes within eight nautical miles of Tullamarine. The airport has advised anyone flying on Friday to check with their airlines for an update of the latest flight schedules.
"We can't say how long the airport will be affected," an airport spokeswoman said.
"It is still business as usual on the ground, but if the lightning gets any closer operations may be impacted."
The wet weather is expected to continue throughout the weekend and on Australia Day.
Showers are forecast for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

New York and other eastern seaboard cities under snowfall not seen in nearly a century.

Now it's the other ends turn

Just about every flight out of Sydney tonight was delayed by T least 30 mins

on qf94, LAX-MEL, and currently making a pit stop on Sydney due to lack of fuel when take off from LAX.

thing for me is, my final destination is Sydney via Melbourne, so they're letting me off here, alongside another 21 pax woo!

12 months ago it happened to me and was hoping for a repeat on the QF94 departing 18/1. Unfortunately 1 day early

Well, please don't fly with me...it makes for a very long night.

So far, 30 in a row without ending up in Sydney. We have come close a few times....

If we went and did the maths probably only about one in every 50 to one in every 100 QF long haul (by that I mean further than east coast Oz to or from southeast Asia in flying time, although an airline may define it a little differently) flight to or from DFW, HNL, LAX, DXB/ LHR, SCL, SFO, YVR or SYD - HND is diverted. The only recent diversion of QF63 appears to be the recent famous and interesting 'five engine' case while QF64 may not have been diverted for quite a while.

Happy to be corrected but it appears that the LHR flights are more likely to be diverted than the LAX ones for weather-related reasons.

Irrespective, any such event can result in rolling 24-hour delays particularly if it is a flight number such as QF10 that has little time to spare for its turnaround back to DXB and LHR as QF9.

For 2 years in a row Classic award flight from SYD-LAX were only available via the 93/94 in mid Dec and late Jan for the return. Resulting in a neat purchase of a J ticket to add to the 3 award tix. Interestingly the J revenue ticket cost the same as a QF11/12 flight but added 80SC for the MEL legs.

QF10 delayed today about two hours as some bloke heavily tattooed off loaded in Dubai not sure about the reason the crew were talking about some sort of medical reason. But not sure! Anybody have any knowledge as to why this guy needed to be offloaded © delaying the whole flight which just landed in Melbourne at 11:00 p

QF93 tday diverts to SYD.
went from FL330 to FL100 in 15 minutes (not a rapid descent)

Though course changed from NE53 to W252 while at FL330. Descent to FL100 occured after heading W252.

landed in Sydney at 1447

And it is currently expected to depart SYD at 1530 for an arrival into LAX at 1000.

speculating as to the cause of diversion, but as its taking off again (meaning not mechanical) it may have been a medical. Or an unruly passenger.

In June 2011 I was on QF93 and a medical emergency 45 minutes after takeoff meant that we had to circle and dump fuel for I think 20 to 30 minutes (I'm sure JB would know exactly how long it takes), sadly I think the passenger died before landing in SYD. We were back on our way to LAX in less than an hour after landing in SYD.

looks like it did the same today - remained at FL100 for about 40 minutes before finally descending and making approach from the N

My son is on this flight and virtually a repeat of this event. He tells me that the flight had to turn around, dump fuel etc to bring back an elderly lady who had become ill. Finished refuelling. They are just about to take off again. Unfortunately they'll have to sort out his connecting flight to JFK.

Cynical me says she was unwell before boarding. Did your son mention if she was able to deplane under her own steam?

I wonder how proactive a family member on the ground can be in assisting the airline to effect a reconnection for a passenger in the air? Might be worth a call to QF to see if they will put him on an AA flight. Unless of course he is P1. Sometimes QF11 will wait but I dont think so in this case.

Specifically:
AA32 departs 1430 arrives 2254
AA180 departs 1645 arrives 0059
both are transcontinental A321

And who would you ring?

Unless the 93 is broken, there is no reason to delay the 11.
