Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

Thursday 5 September 2013's QF108, the 2350 hours ex LAX, departed on time but I assume due to prevailing winds had to divert to BNE this morning, making a relatively efficient stop from 0649 to 0748 before arriving SYD at 0909, 89 minutes late which is quite creditable given the required extra descent into and climb out of BNE and how it missed its landing slot at SYD.

In turn, QF107, the 1000 from SYD this morning to LAX was delayed 81 minutes in departing. The computer shows it as arriving LAX at 0710, half an hour late, but this may be a little optimistic as the B744 involved, VH-OJU has yet to depart SYD. These predicted arrival times are often adjusted if a flight takes longer to push back and taxi than the timetabled allowance.

I'm sure it's far from the first time that QF108 has diverted to BNE but in the last couple of weeks it has not been occurring, save for this occurrence above.

It must be a little annoying for any passengers booked to BNE (or CNS and other central and north Queensland destinations) on a following domestic flight to unexpectedly pull into BNE, but to be unable to leave the flight and save some hours.

Re: QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

A well run airline would be able to control the wind. Poor effort Qantas.

Alan Joyce needs to start blowing some hot air about a premium airline in asia again. That should fix things.

[off topic]

Love this new thread where I can come to read all about the latest delay on Qantas! Wonderful idea.

Just wait until he finds out about the delay out of GLT last night ;)

Re: QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

What's your point?

I'm wondering this too. What is Melbournian1's agenda here.

From what i've read here all I see is either:

1) Troll

2) Journalist

Both are bottom scrapers that no longer warrant any response to further posts.

thankyou mod for fusing all melb1 threads together....now i have a 'one stop shop' to go to for my WTF/LOL moments

Re: QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

a one off delay of two hours on the London-Australia route would not be considered material. even the EU compensation scheme gives nothing. however, i appreciate such a delay could cause problems for passengers with connecting flights who might have given themselves three or four hours to negotiate heathrow.

if the delays were on going, then qf would need to look at it's timetable.

IIRC qantas is of the belief that the Dubai runways closures will not affect their operations next year. however that being said, I am slightly surprised that there doesn't seem to be a warning of potential delays on the qf site (I checked under travel advisories).

people are already booking tickets for next year and I would have thought it might be useful for an announcement to at least give a heads-up so people have the option to build in more connecting time if they think it prudent.

Re: QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

MELl_Traveller, so far despite initial specualtion to the contrary, QF has of late claimed that its flights through DXB (one each from or to SYD or MEL daily, and two each from or to LHR) will not be affected, but the article below suggests that the (reduced) slot allocation has yet to be finalised:

Emirates, flydubai services cut by Dubai Airport repairs | GulfNews.com

If QR are affected, logic tells me QF may be too. EK (down a suggested 22 per cent) and FZ seem to be the most affected. There is the comment about how airlines with one trip a day will be 'protected.' It's unclear if that extends to QF since although it meets that criteria with flights between DXB and MEL or SYD, its passengers can elect to travel by codeshare on EK if they wish.

If flight capacity is to be cut by 28 per cent yet EK is only cutting its flight numbers by 22 per cent, does that imply preferential treatment at its home base?

ozbeachbabe, QF promotes itself as 'the Australian airline' (even though it's only just majority Australian owned). It has a much larger international fleet of planes than VA, with the latter suffering from lack of a spare sometimes. The latter may be unwise timetabling but with such a small fleet, VA probably does not want to have a spare mostly sitting around in case there are problems with VA7 or VA8, as two examples of its flights that sometimes suffer delays. With a larger fleet (for example, 12 A380s) QF can 'afford' the relative luxury of having a spare in case something goes wrong with HKG, LHR or LAX flights.

You are free to monitor VA delays if you wish.

Most people don't 'QF bash': they logically look at the record of the airline and conclude (as 82 per cent of us do) that they want to arrive in or depart Australia by a competitor airline (typically not VA, because it's quite small internationally). If you're one of the 18 per cent remaining patrons (among those who travel overseas by air) of QF international flights, that's your choice - good luck to you.

By the input, many AFFers continue to fly QF internationally. It's probably numero uno for readers of this site, even though that's not typical of international to or ex Oz fliers, so all the more important that attention is given to its significant delays.

If it's not a Qantas bash then it's just nit picking about their schedule reliability on a few flights. You could look at other airlines or even other forms of public transport and you will see that they all suffer from delays.

Re: QF108 diverts from LAX to SYD via BNE

Generally speaking, the only people who care about these kind of delays are those who are affected. Those who are affected will already know that there is a delay.

In the interest of balance, QF9 ran about 20 minutes early this morning into LHR. That and the first bag tag had me out of the airport just after 6am :-)

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

If the OPs concern is the welfare of people making appointments based on timetables, then why not be serious about it -comment on all bus and train services in Australian cities, these will effect a much larger number of people.

QF is by comparison an easy target.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

My train to the city was delayed on Friday by at least 20 minutes so I chose to drive instead. I then got stuck in traffic, so missed grabbing a coffee on the way to my meeting.

Re: QF9 MEL - DXB - LHR delayed 16 hours

Tightly rostered??? Qantas normally have a spare aircraft sitting in Sydney, its crewing that is more of a constraint at times than aircraft. FWIW I don't believe local passengers get taxi vouchers.

i was only a delayed flight and the entire plane was offered cab vouchers or accommodation on a case by case basis.

The lady sitting near me was offered a cab voucher for over a 100km trip and she was a local in BNE. She missed the airtrain back to Ipswich.

The flight was delayed by over 4 hours due to a bird strike.

That is not good.

I do not like delays. I know they happen but sometimes they can be a great inconvenience. I had a 2:00pm appointment at hospital today. I left work at 12:50pm to get there 1:30pm and the bus was ~10 minutes late. Not so bad but could potentially be worse as I was connecting at Cultural Centre. Miss one connection and you wait a while for next one. When I was returning bus was a little late again and missed connection at Cultural Centre.

All up I was gone for 3h 5m and I have to make that time up in the evening. I do not really want to waste my valuable time waiting for delayed buses/trains.

I wish I did not have to rely on public transport.
