Qantas Delays/Cancellations

A picture says a thousand words. But it helps to see why eastbound and westbound flights don't pass nearby one another following the GC route

QF19, the 1210 SYD - MNL (A332 VH-EBG) is only taxiing at 1347 hours so as with many other flights will be badly late.

Additionally on Friday 27 May, QF7 (A388 VH-OQJ) is taxiing behind QF19 but will not be as late, as it ought be able to pick up time with the wind's assistance as nonscenic commented above. This DFW-bound flight is due to push back at 1300 hours and as with its opposite number QF8 has a very good punctuality record, unlike the LAX flights that are more variable.

The B744-operated QF27 from SYD to SCL, due out at 1250 hours and today having VH-OJU as its equipment was yet to push back as at 1352. Again, it may pick up a bit of its schedule enroute, but lacks the very lengthy allowed turnaround that the LAX flights enjoy.

QF560, the 1135 SYD up to BNE took off at 1352 and should arrive at about 1505, two hours late with VH-VZT, another B738, as its aircraft.

Read the ATIS. And consider...the short runway may be into wind, but it's still short. Aircraft take off crosswind limits vary, but 30 and 35 knots are two common numbers.

This Airservices Australia report is from a year ago (but the equivalent of the current quarter) and shows usage of runway 07 hardly featured in May 2015, so if it is any consolation to residents of Sydney suburbs like Sydenham, today's continual aircraft departures to the west is not typical (with the Long Term Operating Plan desiring such usage for only 17 per cent of movements if I read it correctly):

I used 'desire' in the sense of what is laid out in the plan. That is the agreed language of the compilers of the report, who I am sure appreciate that safety is a given with aircraft noise a secondary consideration.

QF577, the 1250 hours from SYD to PER (A332 VH-EBP) is about to take off at 1419 with arrival suggested as 1645 hours, 55 minutes behind time.

QF431, the 1200 SYD to MEL (similarly an A332, VH-EBE) is behind QF577 so it may not arrive in the southern capital until about 1525, 110 minutes late.

QF524, 1205 SYD - BNE (B738 VH-VXN) is next, so it may arrive in the Queensland capital at a similar time of 1525 or so.

At 1425, the 1330 SYD down to MEL, QF437 (B738 VH-VZM) still had three aircraft ahead of it in the queue so it may arrive at about 1540, 35 minutes late. The 1305 hours from SYD to BNE (B738 VH-VYG) is next so it should be approximately 65 minutes behind the schedule in arriving at 1540.

Earlier, QF81, the 1020 SYD - SIN (A333 VH-EBS) took off at 1227 so arrival should be at about 1845, two hours late.

QF64 on Friday 27 May is about to arrive at the SYD gate (ex JNB) about 35 minutes late at 1535 hours. Vh-OEB is the B744.

The 1400 hours SYD across to ADL, QF759 (B738 VH-XZP), should shortly take off (at about 1531) with a likely 60 minute delayed arrival at approximately 1640.

QF473 (1415 hours SYD down to MEL, A332 VH-EBC) should be airborne at approximately 1534, so arrival should be in the order of 1640, 50 minutes delayed. QF439, what should be the preceding 1400 hours departure has fared worse with VHVXQ, a B738, likely to take off at about 1545 hours, ten minutes after it is supposed to have its passengers deplaning in the southern capital. Arrival is an estimated 1650 hours, 75 minutes late.

The 1355 hours to OOL is three behind in the SYD departures queue and in the shape of B738 VH-XZH may arrive at about 1620, again an hour late.

Nonscenic can you translate the image please?

Arrows showing the wind direction. A line is 10 knots, and a triangle 50 knots, so you have direction and speed.

A small point about wind. If you go to the USA and back, and experience exactly the same wind in each direction, the speed does not 'balance' out.

6000nm @ 500 KIAS (nil wind) is 12 hours, and back another 12 hours for 24 overall.

But, with a 100 knot average wind behind you on the way over have;

6000nm @ 600 KG/S, which is 10 hours.

Return;

6000nm @ 400 KG/S, which is 15 hours, giving a return elapsed time of 25 hours.

The arrows have a tail - which have varying lines on them?

JessicaTam, I assume that you are referring to how many (perhaps 'almost every') flight is delayed?

QF459, the 1800 hours SYD to MEL has been altered to depart at a projected 1850. QF487, the 1815, will instead supposedly depart at 1910. QF463, the 1830, becomes a 1935 ex 'olde Sydney town.' QF465, the 1900 hours departure has been cancelled, as has QF489, the 2015 ex SYD for MEL. QF467, the 1930 hours, becomes 2025 hours.

Oh for a properly built and competently operated high speed train along the lower east coast! Many other nations can do it, including for comparable distances to SYD - CBR - MEL and SYD - OOL - BNE.

Some previously unreported delays from earlier on Friday 27 May 2016 included the B744-operated QF63 from SYD to JNB departing 77 minutes late at 1207, with same day arrival predicted as 1815, 65 minutes behind time.

Another B744 flight, QF73 must have had problems apart from just the westerlies in SYD making runway 07 the sole one in use, because its timetabled 1300 hours departure did not occur until 1648. SFO arrival (also same day) is estimated as 1250, three hours and 20 minutes late but not likely to affect the return QF74 given the generous turnaround time allowed.

The QF41 1350 hours departure occurred at 1439 ex SYD with CGK arrival forecast as 1945 hours, 70 minutes late. In common with the QFi Oz - Japan (ex and to both SYD and BNE) and Dallas Fort Worth, USA flights, this offering is one of the more punctual QFi flights.

While flagship QF1 only departed 33 minutes late at 1625, it is expected to be an hour late into DXB at 0125 on Saturday. However provided it can reduce the stay a bit and not be overly held up departing from DXB or upon arrival into LHR, it can often make up time on the second sector as any quick analysis of actual performance will show.

From my current point of view sitting in the SYD J lounge, I think the application of the thread title should just be:

'Yes'.
Sorry to hear. At least your flight to OOL wasn't cancelled and you wasted 4 hours and now have to go back again early in the morning.

On Friday 27 May evening, the SYD airport north-south runways have reopened but delays are continuing.

QF2018, the 1655 hours SYD - WTB was airborne at 1826 with arrival expected at roughly 2008 rather than 1835. VH-QOP, the usual Q400, is the aircraft.

The 1710 hours CNS - BNE, QF655, took off at 1824 with forecast arrival at about 2019 hours, 59 minutes late. The plane is B738 VH-VYA.

QF545, the 1725 hours late afternoon BNE - SYD took off at 1842 (A332 VH-EBO) and should arrive at about 2002, 62 minutes late. QF547, the next same route departure at 1755, took off at 1901 and should arrive 55 minutes late at 2025. Aircraft is VH-VXE, a B738.

Northbound QF1578 (1725 hours SYD - MCY, B717 VH-YQS) took off at 1912 and should arrive at approximately 2023 hours, 83 minutes late.
