Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF6019 (B744 VH-OEJ) is still sitting on the BNE tarmac at 1242 on Sunday 29 May 2016, so it may not be in SYD by the amended arrival time of 1345 (originally 1240).

So the poor passengers on QF73, who supposedly are departing at 1530 from SYD instead of the timetabled 1300 hours, will have to wait longer. At a guess departure of QF73 will be post 1600 this afternoon meaning same day arrival in SFO some time after 1200 'high noon', compared with the scheduled 0930 hours arrival. I assume in these cases where QF has a number of hours' notice and knowledge that a flight like QF73 will be delayed, it contacts cabin and technical crew by text message or other means and asks them to sign on somewhat later - this reduces the chances of a crew being 'out of hours' should the delay become even greater.

As QF74 does not depart from SFO until 2325 hours, the delayed QF73 is many hours from causing unpunctual running for QF74.

UPDATE: QF6019 took off from BNE at 1251 with SYD arrival at gate 8 predicted as 1410 hours. QF73 has been put back further to 1600 hours ex SYD, three hours late.

As an aside, QF94 on Friday evening departed on time from LAX for MEL. Remind me: is QF16 to QF94 (i.e. JFK - LAX - MEL) a 'guaranteed' same (night) connection that QF offers in its ticketing? By 'guaranteed' I mean simply that it meets the minimum connecting time requirement for LAX.

Yes it is. The timetabled connection time is 1 hr 10 min.
While it is a "valid" connection for ticketing purposes, QF94 tends not to wait for QF12 (transcontinental) to ensure a QF93 turnaround (when they do occur) , so not a "guaranteed same night" connection in the sense the 94 will wait.

(I think you mean QF12 to QF94).

The Ferry QF6007 was the 744 that overnighted from JNB Saturday evening that was meant for Sunday's QF25. but was pressed into earlier QF15 service to as FlyerQf says to minimise the multi-domino effect of a late QF15.

QF16 which arrived about 1 hour after QF6007 departed as QF15 then was ferried as QF6019 to SYD in order to operate QF25 to HND tonight.

Would love to be a "fly on the wall" in the Qantas operation centre and sticky beak the logistical exercise on such multi avatar changing occasions.

QF439 SYD-MEL A330 has gone tech and is being subbed by a 737. 1400 departure pushed out to 1430 at this stage. I think it must be my fault, as an hour ago I spotted it was a refurb and got a points upgrade at the lounge. Being the selfless girl I am , I opted for QF453 at 1700 as my replacement flight. It is also a refurb so I hope my jinx is a single use only.

QF439 has now been cancelled. Glad I changed flights when I did.

Thanks JT,

Did QF ask for volunteers to load on to a later flight while it was a "subbed" condition?

Was was the rego number?

I was proactive in asking for the new flight. They were calling people on the flight to the reception desk to reallocate seating. As I have no rush to get home, I offered to move to a later flight to help those who have connections.

It also meant I was in early to nab the J seat on the later flight.

As the flight had already been downgraded in capacity, at least some of the re-accommodating had already been done when the flight was eventually cancelled.

me too! but I'm on the 1600, not refurb'ed :(

the he cancellations are my fault however, this is cancelled flight number 4 in 18 hours.

Can you elaborate on your experience and what you did or tried to do to mitigate?

outlined in the Cathay cancellations thread... bad weather in China and Hong Kong, successive flights cancelled. high frequency and had allows plenty of time for connection so worked out in the end, but too many equipment swaps!

Ok, it is not you, it's me - to coin a phrase. My 1700 QF453 has now been pushed back to 1730. Due to late arrival of the incoming aircraft which could be QF440 MEL-SYD which looks like it is 55 minutes late.

This was/is the mini domino effect of 1 late aircraft from this morning.

The aircraft is VH-EBD

Started with the on time departure but late arrival of the SYD-MEL QF424 (30 min late)
EBD then changed avatar to turned around as QF432 which departed 1.5 hours late from SYD arriving into MEL 1.75 hrs late.

Then changing avatar to become the return QF440. It is late and is due to depart 1.6 hours late at 1535 arriving at 1625 to pick you up. 1730 seems a reasonable departure time for a domestic operation A332 if arrival of QF440 is by 1630.

1521 hrs: MEL airport suggests boarding has started for QF440

QF440 ended up departing MEL 62 minutes late at 1532, arriving SYD at 1643, 48 minutes late.

The badly delayed QF73 from SYD to SFO managed to depart at 1543 which in the circumstances given that its empty working from BNE was delayed is quite a good effort. Same day arrival is forecast for 1125, an hour and 55 minute slate, again not quite as bad as earlier speculated.

One lucky lady. :)

They have bubbles though. Yes? Please!
Who is easily pleased. ;)

Did you think you were going to get off that easily after meeting up with me this weekend? :p
