Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Also on Friday 4 November, QF73 has been altered to depart SYD at 1815 early this evening instead of 1400 hours this afternoon.

QF73 is B744 VH-OEE and took off at 1846 early this evening from SYD for SFO.

The 1715 hours QF451 from SYD to MEL was in the sky at 1751. B738 VH-VZU should arrive at 1924 this evening, 34 minutes late.

QF553, the 1635 hours from BNE down to SYD took off at 1919. B738 VH-VXJ should arrive at about 2145, 35 minutes late.

The Thursday 3 November 2320 hours late night QF16 B744 from LAX departed at 0023 on Friday 4 with Saturday 5 November arrival expected to be 80 minutes behind schedule at 0725.

QF1 DXB-LHR departed 4.5 hours late this morning. I was on the SYD-DXB sector and we were advised on departure they'd had problems with the hydraulics on the cargo door and would need to be fixed in Dubai, so presume thats the reason for the late departure.

Thank you YSSY for a great on-the-spot report. To add in the exact detail, QF1 on Friday 4 November departed from DXB at 0714 instead of 0240, arriving at LHR at 1104 instead of 0650 hours. It then turned around with QF10 departing from LHR 58 minutes late at 1253 - a turnaround of an hour and 49 minutes, which is close to the best I have seen for QF A388s of about an hour and 38 - with DXB arrival at 2333, 33 minutes tardy. In about 20 minutes as I write, it should be departing from DXB at a claimed 0115 hours, 10 minutes late.

With rushed turnarounds it must be challenging to properly clean an aircraft, especially in hard to reach areas such as the bottoms of seat pockets in window or middle seats in Y. Some passengers might find tissues, food particles and so on lying around, or tray table surfaces not properly wiped. This is a 'first world problem', but coughroaches love such environments if they can ever manage to get inside aircraft.

The overnight from PVG to SYD, QF130 (A333 VH-QPA) should arrive 40 minutes late at 1105 on Saturday 5 November.

The Thursday 3 November QF8 (2055 hours long haul from DFW to SYD, A388 VH-OQI) unusually departed late - at 2136 hours - and then diverted via BNE (refuel?) It then continued on to SYD, landing at about 0930 instead of the scheduled 0605 on Saturday 5 November. This DFW - SYD flight has a far better punctuality record than the QF A388 flights from LAX to SYD or MEL.

The 0900 hours Saturday 5 November QF419 from SYD down to MEL is expected to depart at 0940, probably with some races-bound passengers on board.

The 0955 hours SYD - CBR (QF1519) has a more pronounced anticipated delay, with departure predicted at 1115.

At 0945 hours on Saturday 5, SYD appears to be only using the east-west runway (departures to the west) so if that continues for a while it will result in some delays.

As one example, QF421 (0930 hours SYD - MEL, B738 VH-VYH) did not take off until 1019 so will not arrive in MEL until about 1135 instead of the timetabled 1105.

QF1583, the 0925 hours SYD - HBA (B717 VH-YQT) took off at 1021.

UPDATE: QF419 (0900 hours SYD - MEL, A332 VH-EBJ) was still at the terminal (or very close to it, according to FR24) at 1034.

QF121 (0930 hours SYD - ZQN, B738 ZK-ZQA) was not even in the departures queue as at 1047.

WSW winds are at 57kmh, gusting to 65kmh, at Sydney airport.

Sitting on Qf11 at present 10.50am. Just been told that due to wind we are down to 1 runway and will not be doing anything for next 40 mins! Also taking on more fuel so we can fly faster according to captain.

Sometimes a captain will wait it out a bit in case their preferred runway reopens.

Last minute runway changes may need some time in the coughpit to reconfigure the computers etc.

Im not sure a Transpacific A380 can take off from RWY25 which is 2500m. It will depend on the actual TOW. At MTOW 2500 would be a bit short??

Earlier this morning the winds were from the south Heading 330 and then it shifted to SWesterlies heading 230 causing RWY34L&R to shut.

Will be 20-30 kt crosswind

Just advised of 1125 pushback.

The QF website agrees with the captain (funny about that). QF suggests that your LAX arrival will be at 0645 hours, half an hour behind schedule so it will be interesting to see how that matches with reality.

How is patronage, FlyboyAl? Is the flight full in economy and almost so in the other classes?

Hard to tell about loading. I'm upstairs, although ist is certainly not looking full. Lined up on north south rw at noon.

Edit - we arrived in LAX at 0700 - we won't talk about getting through LAX customs!!!!!

Edit. They held the JFK flight for 9am departure so our passengers would make it.

According to the captain our cruising speed was approved to be 80kts higher than the "normal" speed.

QF8 is scheduled to go to BNE again tomorrow and maybe even the day after due to strong head winds.

FA now suggests that QF8 (VH-OQK) 4/11/16 service from DFW has been cancelled after an on-time arrival as QF7.
The seatmaps provided by EF suggests a full F,J,W cabin with a normal looking patronage in Y (ie numerous middle seats empty for payload restriction reasons).

An unusual occurence. It would be impossible to transfer some of these passengers into LAX tonight to connect to the usual ex LAX transpacific services.

Showing just how much time can be lost if SYD has only runway 07/25 in use (the east-west), QF1583 from SYD to HBA on Saturday 5 November departed - pushed back - a minute early at 0924 but arrived 32 minutes behind at 1157.

It was a similar story for QF421, the 0930 hours SYD - MEL that departed five late but arrived MEL 34 late at 1139.

QF1519, the 0955 hours from SYD to CBR pushed back at 1236 and should arrive at 1340, 165 minutes tardy. Quicker to travel on the NSWTrainLink train but of course QF passengers lack any way to know of such delays much in advance.

The 1100 hours QF543 from SYD up to BNE departed at 1143; arrival was estimated 58 late at 1228 but has yet to be updated on the QF website.

The 1115 from SYD to HKG, QF127 has been delayed until a forecast 1330 departure with arrival suggested as exactly two hours late at 1925.

QF23, the 0945 hours from SYD to BKK departed at 1023 and is expected 40 minutes late at 1615 this afternoon in the Thai capital.

QF73, the B744 from SYD to SFO is predicted to push back an hour late at 1500 this afternoon.

Sorry to hear BD1959,

SYD airport is experiencing significant delays. Currently delays of 55 minutes at SYD airport. Your flight possibly will be departing closer to 1500hrs. The last transpacific flight QF11 departed 56 minutes late.

The MEL-SYD 424 was held at the gate 25mins due to 25 being used for arrivals; 16 (?) was still being used for departures. Arrived SYD approx 30mins late - nice stroll onto the waiting bus and I was through security/emmigration at T1 in 30 mins :p.

BD1959, at least the dreaded T2-T1 transfer at SYD worked well this time. Though personally I would have caught an earlier flight. No criticism of you of course, just that I get connection anxiety

RWY16 is still used for some departures but not arrivals. This morning QF11 departed to the south. I expect your A380 will also depart to the south.

RWY 25 is currently used for departures (QF577 A330 just departed from that runway) and arrivals.

QF7 Boarding just announced as approx 14:30 - last time I saw the Seat Map it was a light load (except J and Y+) so hopefully we'll be away about 75mins late.
