Qantas Delays/Cancellations

A media report by Yahooi7 - not the most reliable of sources - suggests that it was an 'engine oil leak' that had the flight crew decide to return to SYD. The report also comments about a passenger feeling turbulence but the way the comment is expressed leads to a conclusion that the reporter omitted the word 'not' (in other words, a smooth return devoid of turbulence.)

The sort of article that explains the demise of the news media. Though, I will admit that they didn't use the 'plunge' word.

It was not an emergency landing. It's a fairly loose use of the term forced landing. And they did not spend several hours circling off the NSW coast.

There have been a number of oil loss diversions for the 380 (as there have been for most other aircraft types) over the years. One was quite recent, and also into Sydney. It does not necessarily mean that the engine was shut down, though in a four engined aircraft that's a non event anyway.

I had a friend on the QF7 that got diverted back to Sydney yesterday. Qantas moved her to this morning's QF11.
QF11/12 tomorrow has been changed to a 744 due to the A380 back from Dallas being delayed 24 hrs
Hopefully the flight wasn't too full, less seats on the 747. There's also 1 of the A380's out of service in Manila for maintenance.

Friday 21 July's QF12 commenced pushing back in JFK at 1858 hours (48 minutes behind schedule) with LAX arrival occurring at 2149, 49 minutes late. The changeover to an A388 occurred with it departing as the second sector for QF12 at 2340, 70 minutes tardy. Sunday 23 SYD arrival is estimated at 0710 hours, 50 minutes behind schedule.

QF94 on Friday late night departed LAX 36 late at 2246; Sunday arrival should be at around 0743, 48 minutes tardy.

The departure of BNE-bound QF16 occurred at 0017 hours on Saturday 21 July from LAX, 57 minutes late. Sunday 23 arrival should be at approximately 0652, 42 minutes late.

While all three delays are anticipated to be less than an hour, they are becoming depressingly familiar, although not necessarily every night with the frequency and extent of delays varying by route and date. Nonetheless they are peeving to some passengers who have a connection to make upon arrival in Australia, because as one AFF member commented recently, he or she had wait in excess of five hours for a flight from SYD down to MEL when they'd been placed on QF12 (flights between SYD and MEL were mostly apparently full on that day.) Another problem is for passengers connecting to QF domestic routes that have lower frequencies: the waiting time if one misses the flight on which one is booked may be lengthy.

Sunday 23 July has QF130, the ex-PVG redeye arriving in SYD at 0905, half an hour behind schedule with A333 VH-QPE.

QF93 from MEL to LAX is forecast to depart half an hour late at 0945.

QF29 (1020 hours MEL to HKG morning flight) is to be delayed until 1430 this afternoon, with expected arrival at 2205, 245 minutes behind time. There is no obvious reason for this delay as QF36, QF38 and QF80 are all broadly on time and QF30 was 45 minutes late into MEL at 0825 hours.

The 1000 hours from SYD up to HKG (QF127) reverted to a smaller aircraft than the A388 from 19 July (after the conclusion of the busier July school holidays) but to my surprise has become a B744 not an A333. In any case, it is suggested to be departing an hour late on 23 July.

Due to the late departure of QF7 (see OATEK's post above) on Saturday 22 July, the same date's QF8 is suggested as departing DFW 90 minutes late at 2345 hours for a Monday 24 July arrival at 0740, 95 minutes tardy.

333 isn't big enough for this route, 744 is the regularly scheduled aircraft for 127/128.

QF127 is delayed until 3.15pm now. Maybe there is expected weather or congestion at HKG?

QF15 is delayed 4 hrs due to a fuel leak.

QF11 from SYD is a 744 today due to the 24 hr delayed A380 back from Dallas. This means the onward QF11 to JFK should be able to depart LAX on time if they are happy to go without waiting for connecting QF15 passengers.

On Sunday 23 July, although not shown as likely to be delayed, QF23 from SYD to BKK departed 59 minutes late at 1049 with arrival likely at 1727, 57 late, meaning a tardy commencement of push back for QF24 in BKK.

As noted above, QF93 from MEL was suggested as departing at 0945 but this turned into 1025; LAX arrival is predicted as 0700, just 25 minutes tardy.

QF127 has also been delayed from 1000 to a mid afternoon 1515 hours departure, with HKG arrival predicted at 2150 tonight, 270 minutes behind schedule.

QF129 from SYD to PVG was another flight that as at 0800 this morning was displaying as likely to be on time. However it was off its blocks at 1028, 53 late and should pull in to its allocated mainland Chinese airport gate at 1917, 43 late.

The 1300 hours longhaul from SYD across to SFO is showing as departing at 1355 but that time has passed.

QF769 (1240 hours MEL - PER, A332 VH-EBE) was in the sky at 1321 this afternoon. It should pull in at 1528, 38 late.

QF15/16 is now cancelled. OJS is the unserviceable aircraft.

Flyerqf, given that most QF or competitor options tend to depart Oz before 1400 daily for LAX - HA is one exception I can quickly think of from SYD (via HNL), and VA9 is the 2130 hours Sunday nonstop from BNE to LAX - how on earth do these passengers get to LAX promptly if QF15 tomorrow is fairly close to full, or even if it only has 50 seats spare and there were 300 booked today?

It may be a trifle easier for QF to rebook QF16 passengers for the Sunday 23 July ex LAX as this group has more notice.

Advice from passengers on the ground booked on either QF15/QF16 as to what hotel(s) QF used, transfer and meal arrangements as well as to what flight they were rebooked would be illuminating.

QF may need to put some of them on VA tonight.

Also worth noting that QF127 is now delayed until 1715

All Qantas HKG flights are delayed today (23/07) are likely to be caused by a signal 8 typhoon in HKG today.. Signal 8 storm is severe storm in HKG.. people will NOT work under signal 8 typhoon in the city

The 24 hour delayed QF8 from DFW to SYD departed at 2254 hours on Saturday 22 July with Monday 24 arrival expected 24 hours and five minutes late at 0610 hours.

The Saturday 22 July QF8 was delayed by the late arrival of QF7, but commenced pushing back at 0012 hours on Sunday 23 with likely Monday 24 arrival at 0814 to be 129 minutes tardy.

B744 VH-OEG on QF127, the 1000 hours SYD - HKG departed at 1741 hours on Sunday 23 July, taking off at 1803. Arrival is estimated at 2350 hours tonight, 390 minutes late.

Apparently Typhoon Roke - the third time a typhoon has borne that name - has just exited the "special administrative region" as winds have dropped according to a report posted at 1736 AEST by the 'South China Morning Post', so it should be smooth sailing apart from the usual air traffic congestion. QF128 is estimated by QF to depart HKG at 0115 hours on Monday 24 July for the flight back to SYD where arrival is anticipated at 1215 hours, 305 late by QF.

QF118, tonight's scheduled 2125 hours second flight of the evening from HKG to SYD is forecast to depart at 2315 with Monday 24 July arrival expected at 1055, 115 minutes late.

Saturday 22 July's QF12 departed JFK extremely late at 2130 hours (200 minutes tardy), arriving LAX at 2357 hours, 177 late. The second sector QF12 with its different model and registration numbered aircraft then pushed back at 01`56 hours on Sunday 23 July, 206 late with Monday 24 arrival forecast for 0957 hours, 207 minutes behind the timetable.

The 24 July arriving in MEL QF94 is not nearly as late with likely arrival at 0735, 40 minutes down.

The scheduled 2320 hours Saturday 22 July QF16 departed at 0205 hours on Sunday; BNE arrival on Monday 24 ought be at around 0846 hours, 156 minutes late. This will at least slightly delay Monday morning's QF15 from BNE to LAX, the timetabled 1020 hours ex the Sunshine State.

With its rostered QF15 cancelled this morning as noted above by AFF member Flyerqf (thank you!), B744 VH-OJS has not operated a flight ex BNE on Sunday 23 July.

Tomorrow morning's QF11 is also delayed by 2 hours, now set to depart at 11:50am.

With QF10 arriving in MEL at 2133 hours during the evening of Sunday 23 July - 38 minutes late - QF9 from MEL to DXB and on to LHR is expected to depart half an hour late at 2325 hours. Given a good run and no extra time in DXB, this should not preclude an on time arrival in LHR, fingers crossed.

Heavily delayed QF128 has been sitting on the Tarmac fully boarded for 2.5 hrs with a technical issue. A cancellation looking likely.
