Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Hopefully they will enforce it this time at least.
How are you going to play it?. If cutting it fine how are you going to wrangle a free transfer to QF5739?
If indeed on the day the queues are longer maybe you will get a no questions asked flight change/

I really have no option but to play it straight. I'll try and get there earlier, but I'm not going to kill myself on the road for the sake of a flight. My current schedule has me at the airport 60 minutes prior as I allowed a 30 minute margin for traffic delays. Ultimately, I have a ticket stating I have to check in thirty minutes prior. Qantas have not notified me of any change to this.
I'll pop a comment in Wednesday evening to say how it went. Hopefully I won't be submitting it from the Melbourne Qantas lounge!

Melburnian1, I am having trouble finding delays over an hour for QF27, perhaps you can have a look through your notes (I am trying to find which aircraft the OP is referring to here)

If they think an older age leads to greater delays, perhaps they should look here ;)

Often delays like this are not accurately recorded in the usual apps like FA,FR24.

mannej, I went backwards from the current page to page 576 in this thread, then gave up. (Apologies.)

In post numbers 5735 and 5740, there was mention of how QF27 from SYD to SCL was estimated at 256 minutes late into SCL (later revised to actual arrival of 1526 hours at SCL.)

Then in post number 5749 (21 July) there was reference to how QF27 was 100 minutes late.

On 26 July, in a more recent post, I referred to B744 VH-OEG being 100 minutes late - again an estimate.

I don't doubt that recently one day QF28 from SCL to SYD has been a day late - it can occur and my vague memory is that it did one so fairly recently - but these fora, while amazing, are not overly easy to search so I suspect I have failed in the task. There are also so many delays 9not just re QF) that one tends to forget all but the most unusual after a while. Apologies again mannej.

Monday 31 July had what has become a bad performer, QF23, the 0950 hours SYD - BKK depart 40 late with arrival estimated at 1728, 48 minutes tardy. This will delay departure of QF24, the 1810 hours overnight from BKK to SYD.

The B744 on QF15 (1020 hours BNE - LAX) commenced pushing back at 116 with same day arrival estimated 41 minutes behind schedule at 0641 hours.

The 1205 hours SYD - MNL, QF19 departed 47 late at 1252 with arrival projected at 1904, 34 minutes late.

QF851 (1340 hours early afternoon CBR down to MEL that was airborne at 1503, B738 VH-VZA) should arrive at roughly 1559, 69 late.

Sunday 30 July's QF8 departed from DFW at 2231, 16 minutes late so arrival on Tuesday 1 August should be at 0640 hours, 35 late.

QF74 is not operating into SYD on Tuesday due to Sunday's 'retirement' flight to SFO for a 26 year old QF B744, the oldest aircraft in its fleet by quite a margin.

QF1520, the 1710 hours CBR up to SYD that took off at 1744 (B717 VH-YQY) should arrive at 1841 hours, 36 minutes late on 31 July.

Later on 31 July, QF583 (1945 hours from SYD across to PER that was in the sky at 2026, A332 VH-EBR) is suggested as arriving at 2339 late tonight, 49 minutes late.

True but... this is an issue outside the control of the airlines. They have operational considerations... they're not going to hold a flight for a passenger seeking to enforce the minimum check-in times. I would expect airlines to update their minimum check-in times once they have an understanding of the implications of this increased security, but ATM I don't think the times stated in the contract of carriage or elsewhere are necessarily binding. This is out of their control.

Tuesday 1 August has QF94 from LAX to MEL (A388 VH-OQA) arriving 49 minutes late at 0744. This wil delay the departure of this morning's QF93 (0915 hours MEL - LAX), but hopefully by only 10 minutes to half an hour.

QF416 (0830 hours MEL - SYD) has got the boot.

Totally agree. I wouldn't expect them to hold a flight either, however I would expect them to take a sympathetic approach to someone who misses a flight due to issues which are also outside the passengers control. In my case, I've appointments booked with people who are also traveling, and then I have to drive to the airport. My only option would be to take a later flight out of Melbourne, but that would have consequences at the other end of the flight. I've little choice but to follow my original schedule. If I miss the flight, so be it; I'll have to take a later one, which was my only option in the first place. I'm hoping priority security will save the day.

Advice from AFFers as to whether airlines (including QF) are sympathetically rebooking passengers on later flights in these circumstances would be appreciated.

My guess is that this will occur a lot more now, but concrete evidence on the ground would be helpful.

There may be fog in CBR as QF1513 (0815 hours ex SYD that was airborne at 0905, B717 VH-YQT) is in a holding pattern east of Tarago, NSW at 0950. Timetabled arrival was 0915 so it may be at least an hour late into the national capital.

QF1543, the 0615 hours BNE - CBR that was airborne at 0750 hours (B717 VH-NXJ) is in the same area also undertaking a hold, so it will be more than two hours late arriving.

QF706 (0645 ex ADL, B738 VH-VXD; QF804 (B738 VH-VXI, the 0700 hours ex MEL and QF814 - B738 VH-VXO, the 0830 hours ex MEL) are all in a hold southeast of apple grove territory Batlow, NSW so arrival of the first two will also be more than two hours late.

If the fog persists diversions may occur.

UPDATE: QF804 landed in CBR at 1011. QF706 is about 10 minutes behind, with QF814 another 10 minutes back. QF1513 and QF1543 were still in holding patterns at 1015, but one presumes they too will make it in to CBR and not have to divert.

QF93 (0915 hours MEL - LAX) departerd 50 minutes late. Arrival is suggested as 0705 hours same day, half an hour behind schedule.

QF2130 (1235 hours MEL - CBR) has been cancelled.

Also on Tuesday 1 August, QF1635, the scheduled 1030 hours arrival in MEL ex CBR arrived at just after 1400 hours this afternoon, doubtless due to the earlier fog afflicting flights to and from then national capital.

QF1507, the mid afternoon 1520 hours MEL down to HBA should depart at around 1820 hours. This is due to QF1535 ex CBR arriving at about 1740 instead of its scheduled 1425 hours. Aircraft is B717 VH-NXJ.

While few of us want to be the 'boy who cried wolf', on Wednesday 2 August there is a fair chance of fog in not just CBR but MEL as well, and possibly even late tonight in MEL. If that does occur and it is severe, expect diversions.

On 2 August, QF406 (the 0645 hours MEL - SYD) has been cancelled as have two VAs in each direction between MEL and SYD as well as a VA BNE - MEL and return and the same on the MEL - CBR route. VA may be more conservative when it comes to fog predictions than QF. Not sure which is wiser.

QF gives a different meaning to the word priority and its not necessarily in favour of status.

Priority security - hardly ever policed
Priority boarding - hardly ever policed
Priority luggage - they give you a special coloured tag to make you feel important.

Priority security is certainly now enforced at the new BNE domestic entry; they want to see your BP before they let you through to the xray belt.

Or you start walking into the QF lounge, they tell you their security thingie is broken, and channel you into the priority queue without looking at anything. 6:20 this morning.

Today's QF94 has diverted to Syd. Arriving into Melbourne 2 hours late. All other aircraft landing so it doesn't seems weather (fog) related.
Whats going on Melburnian1 ?

Of course it is.
It is fog related ?
Heading out to airport now from Mornington and not foggy at all here. Was pea soup yesterday though.
Actually, it looks like quite a few aircraft holding at moment.

Under the VA flight delays/ cancellations thread, I have recorded on Wednesday 2 August how at about 0730 hours, two VA flights (one from HBA and one from CBR) had missed approaches in MEL.

Domestic flights as at 0745 seem to be all taking off to the west, causing delays, but so far (touch wood) despite fog, the airport is operating with no other flights (yet) diverted.

QF412 (A332 VH-EBL), the 0730 hours MEL - SYD took off at 0821 to the west, so it will be at least half an hour late.

The 0630 hours SYD - MEL QF405 (A332 VH-EBJ) that took off at 0656 hours is arriving at 0842 hours, 37 minutes late with visibility at touchdown on runway 16 advised as 550 metres.

QF674 (B738 VH-VZO, the 0640 hours ADL across to MELO that was in the sky at 0712 hours) should be arriving at roughly 0901, 31 late.

A332 VH-EBA on QF409 (0700 hours SYD - MEL) was airborne at 0749 with expected arrival at 0909, 34 late.
