Qantas Delays/Cancellations

On Wednesday 9 May, QF10 departed LHR at 1437 hours, 82 minutes late but not taking off until 1533 with arrival at PER on Thursday 10 estimated at 1508, 138 minutes tardy.

QF10's continuation from PER, the 1430 hours to MEL will naturally be delayed with anticipated departure at 1610, 100 minutes late a very optimistic prediction since one might expect this intermediate stop to take at least 80 minutes. MEL arrival is suggested as 2140, 105 minutes late. QF95 from MEL to LAX is not operating tonight (planned, not a sudden cancellation as far as I can see.)

Updating the information back two posts, QF10 arrived PER at 1505 hours, 125 minutes late on Thursday 10 May. B789 VH-ZND then departed at 1632, taking off promptly at 1544. Arrival in MEL should be at 2205 hours, 130 minutes behind schedule.

QF457 (1745 hours SYD down to MEL, B738 VH-VXU) was in the sky at 2006 hours so arrival has altered to 2011 hours, 51 minutes late.

Earlier on Thursday 10 May, QF15 from BNE to LAX departed 55 late at 1105 with arrival suggested as 45 late at 0645 hours, slightly delaying the transcon QF11.

On a wet, gloomy Friday 11 May 2018 in Melbourne, QF605 (B738 VH-VXQ, the 0600 hours BNE down to MEL that did not take off until 0654) is arriving at 0906 hours, 41 minutes late.

In the opposite direction, QF608, the 0810 hours departure that was in the sky at 0848 with Vh-VYD is similar in its tardiness, being likely to arrive in BNE at 1051, 31 minutes past the allotted.

B789 VH-ZNC is arriving in MEL at 0902 hours, 37 late on QF96 ex LAX.

Thursday 10 May's QF11 departed LAX at 0820 hours, 40 minutes late but did not arrive in JFK until 1800 hours, 80 late. It lost a little time on the ground, departing JFK 90 minutes behind schedule at 1940 hours with LAX arrival suggested as 2225 hours, 85 minutes late, leading to delays for QF12 to SYD and QF16 to BNE at a minimum.

On Friday 11, QF11 from SYD to LAX is delayed by an expected 55 minutes to 1030 in pushback, with LAX arrival becoming an estimated 0735 hours, 75 minutes late, which in turn will probably delay the Friday QF11 transcon B744 to JFK. QF93 departed MEL 65 late at 1005 but should only be 0650, 25 minutes late.

Given the east coast weather today especially in the town of his namesake, @Melburnian1 will be busy across multiple threads.....:p

You'd think that, but so far delays have not been bad. It's 'early days' and as any of us who travel know, delays can compound if there are connecting passengers (or crews), planes overstay at gates that at busier times leads to other flights unable to have a gate at which to terminate or ATC decides to hold some flights at their origin as a 'controlled departure' if I have that latter term correct.

As a general rule, our domestic airlines cope less well with severe weather than well built high speed rail and its trains, going by experience overseas. This seems counter-intuitive.

The always helpful AFFer Aviator Insight (the complete gentleman) posted this in the VA form, but it's worth pinching to pop here assuming he doesn't mind:

Strong westerly winds forecast today for SYD (270 degrees at 22kts gusting up to 35kts). This is basically all crosswind on the parallels so looks likely that operations may go to single runway if the forecast winds eventuate. There is also forecast moderate to severe turbulence below 5000ft so expect a few bumps in the circuit area.

Delays alright. 2 flights MEL to PERTH cancelled this morning, lets see if the 11:30am one is delayed

Continuing with Friday 11 May 2018, QF127 (1035 hours morning SYD up to HKG) departed 29 minutes late. Arrival is expected at 1832, 32 late.

QF475 to perth also delayed. Still sitting at the gate in Melbourne. “Crew microphone fault”

Thanks L1925. Always great to have on-the-spot reports.

QF430, the 1200 'high noon' MEL - SYD has been cancelled, as is QF440, the 1430 hours departure on the same route.

No Worries, QF475 now running 55mins late, pushing off now. Due in to Perth at 2:20pm. No doubt flow on effect at the other end

QF is now showing a landing time of 1406 which means 1411 at the PER terminal gate. If the gate allocations are correct, it will next be on QF654 from PER up to BNE that has a scheduled departure of 1445, so that will be late away.

QF580, the 1230 hours PER across to SYD has been altered to depart at 1300 hours.

In more on Friday 11 May, QF73, the 1245 hours from SYD to SFO is estimated to depart at 1430.

QF687 (1235 hours lunchtime MEL- ADL) departed 89 minutes late at 1404.

The 1300 hours MEL to SYD, QF434, departed 28 late but arrival is suggested as 42 minutes late at 1507.

QF618, the 1310 hours MEL - BNE commenced its pushback 49 late. BNE arrival is said to be 64 minutes tardy at 1624.

Although its 1339 departure meant that QF436 from MEL to SYD was only nine late at that point, arrival is suggested as 1539, 44 late. Winds were gusting to 61kmh at MEL so that may be the cause. Wind speed has, as at 1440, dropped somewhat.

The MEL - ADL QF684 is expected to depart 80 minutes behind schedule at 1500 hours this afternoon.

Updating Friday 11 May 2018, QF438 (1400 hours MEL - SYD, B738 VH-XZK) was airborne at 1508 so arrival has been forecast for 1622, 57 late.

B717 VH-YQY on the 1245 hours lunchtime HBA up to SYD is in a worse position, timekeeping wise with takeoff having occurred at 1526, just under 150 late. Consequent expected arrival is 1711 hours, 156 minutes tardy.

B738 VH-XZO on the 1340 hours MEL across to ADL (QF685) is much later than the website had antcipated as reported in a posting above, as at 1537 hours, the aircraft was awaiting ATC permission for takeoff. It took off to the south at 1539 although had departed the terminal at 1502. Gusty winds probably explain the long wait for takeoff.

Continuing with a blustery Friday 11 May 2018 down in MEL, QF9, the 1515 hours to PER/LHR (B789 VH-ZNC) was delayed with many other aircraft due to gusty winds but took off at 1609. Arrival in PER should be 25 late at 1740 hours.

A332 VH-EBF on QF442, the mid afternoon 1500 hours MEL up to SYD was still in the queue for takeoff at 1611, so arrival will be at least 45 minutes late. There are quite a few other aircraft behind it.

QF473 (B738 VH-VYD, the 1415 hours SYD down to MEL that took off at 1511 hours) is arriving at 1649, 59 minutes late.

QF624 (1510 hours MEL - BNE, VH-VYB was airborne at about 1646 after departing at 1542 (so a very long time queueing) with arrival estimated at 1843, 83 minutes late.

The 1520 hours MEL - CBR (QF818, VH-XZM) took off at 1653 so expected arrival is at 1747, 82 late.

QF691, 1540 hours from MEL across to ADL has VH-XZC but at 1659 was well back in the takeoff queue, so its arrival will be delayed by at least an hour in the wine capital.

VH-VZX on the 1545 MEL - SYD, QF470 took off at 1700, 10 minutes before it should be at its designated SYD arrival gate. Thus it will be about an hour late, not helped by having to take off to the south.

In more on Friday 11 May, QF443 (1500 hours SYd down to MEL, B738 VH-VXC that was airborne at 1604) was in a hold over Mt Buller (Vic) as at 1711n hours so arrival is likely at 1729 (or after), a minimum of 54 minutes late.

The next southbound (QF445, B748 VH-VZV), the 1530 hours took off at 1655 so arrival is expected at about 1812, 67 late.

QF1515, the 1535 hours short hop from SYD down to CBR (B717 VH-NXR) was airborne at 1649 with arrival suggested at 1721 hours, also similar at 51 minutes behind the timetable.

At 1714 ATC was advising of low visuals into MEL and extensive delays. The latter won't be news to many AFFers flying in and out of the southern capital today.

QF442 (1500 hours northbound MEL -SYD with A332 VH-EBF that took off at 1618) should arrive at 1720, 55 minutes late.

Still with Friday 11 May, QF627 (B738 VH-VYJ, the 1600 hours BNE down to MEL that was airborne at 1655, about 35 minutes tardy) is arriving at about 1910 hours, 45 minutes tardy.

QF453 (1700 hours SYD down to MEL that took off at 1818 with VH-XZA) should arrive at approximately 1929 hours, 54 late.

A332 VH-EBF on QF571 (the 1735 hours late afternoon from SYD across to PER that took off at 1846) should arrive at approximately 2127, 47 minutes late.

The 1700 BNE down to MEL, QF631 (VH-VZG) was in the sky at 1807, about 50 late, so arrival is shortly at 2008 hours, 43 late.

Opposite number QF632 (VH-VXC) took off at 1939 hours despite an 1810 mandated departure time, so arrival should be at around the 2140 hours mark, 80 late.

The 1705 hours ADL across to MEL that has B738 VH-XZC, QF688, took off at 1857 so its arrival is much delayed at a suggested 2032 hours, 97 minutes tardy.

Additionally on Friday 11 May 2018, QF19 (1210 hours SYD - MNL, A332 VH-EBO) took off at 1256. Arrival should be at about 1905 hours, 35 minutes late which will slightly delay tonight's QF20 redeye, the 2000 hours back down to SYD.

QF23 from SYD to BKK arrived an hour late at 1740, delaying tonight's QF24 back to SYD.

The MEL - NRT QF79 also arrived half an hour behind time at 1905 hours.

Awful local disruptions currently out of Melbourne.

Which flight are you on and what's its anticipated delay?

I noted a sample above but it's impossible for me to record every delay. Certainly as the day has worn on, they've become worse, which is unsurprising as the weather in Melbourne was bleak this arvo to put it mildly (although from media, far worse down in Hobart.)

It really does show Pushka that these days if there are major disruptions in SYD or MEL, at least 40 per cent of domestic flights are adversely affected, and probably more given passengers connecting, planes rotating BNE - SYD - MEL and so on.
