Qantas Delays/Cancellations

It’s not really anything to do with parts per se. The MELs state explicitly that some items must be repaired if they can be, or perhaps that an aircraft can transit but not through a major maintenance base (for that airline). There’s a few permutations. Almost all MELs also include time or sector limits.

Friday 27 April 2018 saw QF4, the HNL - SYD due to depart at 1030 hours taking off at 1251. Arrival on Saturday evening 28 April looks to be 1901 hours, 111 minutes behind schedule. The A333 is VH-QPH. Something must have gone wrong in HNL as QF3 had arrived a minute late at 0901 on Friday morning.

The 1800 hours early evening MEL - SYD (QF458, A332 VH-EBM) was airborne at 1905 so should arrive at 2009 hours, 44 minutes behind time.

QF96 (B789 VH-ZNA, the 2355 hours very late night Friday 27 April that was airborne from LAX at 0129 on Saturday 28) is arriving MEL on Sunday 29 at 0933 hours, 68 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPH on Sunday 29 April is continuing QF23 (0950 hours SY up to BKK) reputation for late running. The flight departed SYD at 1028 and took off at about 1046; arrival should be 44 late at 1724 late this afternoon local time. This will delay tonight's QF24.

It would be great if others could inform us just why this flight is so often late. One theory is that as this route has many leisure travellers, it is low in the pecking order if QF has a choice between which morning Asian flights ex SYD with A333s or A332s to delay.

In further on Sunday 29 April, the longhaul SYD - DFW QF7 that has been flagged for reduction in forthcoming months to six times a week rather than daily is delayed by an hour to 1335 in its expected departure. Arrival should be 35 late at 1335 hours.

UPDATE: This aircraft looked to be A388 VH-OQI that arrived on QF12 at 0852 on Sunday, 22 minutes late.

However the flight has been delayed by exactly 24 hours to 1235 hours on Monday 30 April, presumably operating as QF7D. Advice as to what has gone wrong would be appreciated.

QF8 ex DFW at 2150 on Sunday 29 will also be delayed exactly 24 hours. This is the Tuesday morning (1 May) scheduled arrival in Sydney that should now arrive on Wednesday 2.

On Monday 30 April 2018, QF400, the first of the morning at 0600 from MEL up to SYD did not depart until 0638. Arrival for A332 VH-EBD is predicted at 0818, 53 late.

QF488, the 0845 hours MEL - SYD and QF816, the 1030 hours MEL - CBR have been cancelled.

The 0625 hours long domestic from SYD across to PER, QF565 did not take off until 0724. A332 VH-EBA should arrive at 1003 hours, 33 minutes late.

B738 VH-VXK on QF495 (0710 hours SYD - MEL) was not airborne until 0758, so arrival is suggested as 0930 hours, 45 late.

In further on Monday 30 April 2018, QF407, the 0720 hours SYD - MEL (normally it's the 0715 hours, but must have been altered by ATC with latter's 'controlled departures' program) took off at 0803 hours. B738 VH-VXC should arrive at 0925, half an hour late.

QF411 (VH-VYC, the 0730 hours) was in the sky at 0859 so it won't arrive until 1021, 86 minutes behind schedule.

Continuing with Monday 30 April 2018, A333 VH-QPB arrived MEL on QF80 (ex NRT) seven minutes early at 0738 hours.

However, in forming QF29 (0935 hours MEL - HKG), it did not depart until 1016, taking off at 1037. Expected arrival is 1759, 39 minutes behind schedule.

QF19 and QF107, both timed at 1210 hours from SYD to MNL and PEK respectively have been delayed until a suggested 1230 in pushing back.

In more on Monday 30 April 2018, QF686 (lunchtime 1305 hours ADL across to MEL, B738 VH-VYG) took off at 1459 and so is arriving at 1636, 101 minutes late.

QF444 on 30 April (1530 hours MEL - SYD that did not take off until 1730, VH-VYG) should arrive at 1842 hours, 117 minutes late.

The SYD - ABX QF2217 (Q300 VH-SBG) should arrive at 2050, half an hour tardy.

In further on 1 May 2018, QF27, the 1135 hours SYD - SCL departed at 1209. Arrival - same day - should be at 1141 hours, 31 late.

The long flight to DFW from SYD, QF7, was expected to depart by 1300 (compared to its 1235 hours timetable) but had not done so.

The Wednesday 2 May 2018 arrival of QF12 (LAX - SYD) should occur at 0715 hours, 45 minutes late.

The LAX - BNE QF16 pushed back at 0009 hours on Tuesday 1 May, so is predicted to arrive on Wednesday at 0645 hours, 40 minutes late.

QF33, the non-daily 1015 hours morning SYD to KIX is usually very punctual.

However on Wednesday 2 May it is delayed to an expected 1330 hours in its departure with arrival put back by 200 minutes to 2230 hours local time. This is the first time I have observed QF33 being more than an hour or so late.

QF34, the 2040 hours, should be able to depart KIX at about 2345 or 2350, arriving SYD before 0915 in the morning.

UPDATE: QF33 did not depart SYD until 1431. Arrival has become a suggested 2330 hours. QF34's departure time has not been altered on the website - still showing as 2040, but if the flight operates, it will be from around the 0110 hours mark. A333 VH-QPI had arrived in SYD this morning on QF24 (ex BKK) at 0813, 48 minutes late, so no obvious reason for the delay to the KIX flight.

QF422 the sched 10am MEL-SYD was delayed departure 40m and made up a total of 2m to arrive 38m late. Apparently some issue with loader.

mrsdoc not happy......

Thursday 3 May 2018 sees QF29, the scheduled morning 0935 hours MEL - HKG delayed in its departure until 1200 'high noon.' Arrival should be at 1935 tonight, 135 minutes late. So far no published delays for QF30 or QF98 tonight respectively ex HKG for MEl and BNE, but often the QF website is not updated until a delayed flight is at cruising altitude. You'd think the software could be programmed to do it earlier as Blind Freddy can see that one flight ex HKG tonight has to be late.

QF81, the 1015 hours SYD - SIN should depart at 1230 with expected arrival put back to 1910 hours, 140 minutes late.

UPDATE: QF29 (A333 VH-QPE) took off from MEL at 1238 this afternoon. Anticipated arrival is 2011 hours, 171 minutes late into HKG. The aircraft had only been 13 late in arriving MEL at 0748 hours this morning on QF30 ex HKG.

In further on Wednesday 3 May, QF438 (1400 hours SYD down to MEL that did not take off until 1455, B738 VH-VYH) should arrive in the southern capital at 1558 hours, 33 late.

QF81 departed SYD at 1253 with SIN arrival suggested as 1920 hours, 150 minutes late. QF82 remains as a scheduled and anticipated 2110 hours redeye back to SYD. VH-QPI is the A333.
