Quickstatus, SYD in my humble view is a 'hub' in that passengers can and do transfer: Singapore to Christchurch is one example; Fiji to Hong Kong might be another. Plus it's clearly a hub between international and domestic flights with the latter radiating to all parts of Oz. Additionally, at say 0900 in the morning many QFi aircraft are in SYD.
SYD has a 'very substantial presence' of QFi A332s/ A333s and as far as the smallish QF fleet for the A388s and B744s, also for those. Plus it's a true (domestic) hub for B738s - ubiquitous!
MEL and BNE are lesser hubs for QFi (much smaller!) but MEL is very close to SYD in numbers of domestic passengers carried from or to it.
I think know what you mean though: you're thinking that airports like Changi are classic 'hub and spokes', and fair enough.
