Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Friday 26 April's QF24, the 1810 hours BKK down overnight to SYD is predicted to depart 80 late with Saturday 27 arrival 0735, 70 minutes behind the timetable.

The DFW to SYD QF8 should arrive at 0655, half an hour behind schedule on Saturday 27.

QF814 (B738 VH-VZL, the 0815 hours morning MEL up to CBR on Saturday 27 April) was in the sky at 0953 so arrival has become a predicted 1042, 82 late. This aircraft had been in MEL since 1838 hours last night, so no obvious reason for the delay. It isn't foggy in CBR (although I didn't read the aviation more detailed forecast).

With QF27 delayed departing SYD yesterday, the returning QF28 from SCL to SYD will arrive on Saturday at 1915 hours, 85 late. The B744 looks to be forming QF25, the scheduled 2050 hours SYD - HND so it will be at least slightly late away.

QF41, the 1345 hours SYD - CGK is usually punctual (or early) into Jakarta but on 27 April it has been altered to depart at 1620 hours, 155 minute slate, so tonight's QF42, the redeye back down to SYD, will also be delayed.

After QF19 yesterday arrived MNL 17 late at 1847 hours, something went awry as the QF20 due to depart MNL at 2000 hours on Friday 26 has been delayed 26 hours until an expected 2200 hours Saturday 27 April pushback. SYD arrival is predicted as 0735 on Monday 28, 1525 minutes late. A333 VH-QPB is the aircraft still in MNL. This may account for the delay to QF41/QF42.

For the second time in a few days, QF43 (1630 hours afternoon SYD - DPS) has been delayed. On Saturday 27 April, it pushed back at 1824, so expected arrival is 2221 late tonight, 76 minutes tardy, meaning the redeye QF43 will be delayed.

QF3 (1915 hours evening SYD - HNL) departed 40 late with arrival predicted as 0901 same day, 31 late.

As I predicted above due to the late inbound QF28 from SCL, QF25 tonight has a relatively minor predicted delay with off blocks expected 25 late at 2115.

UPDATE: The expected delay to QF25 has extended to 2130 hours ex SYD. This flight however often makes up time on a gate-to-gate basis.

FURTHER UPDATE: It departed SYD at 2134, 44 late with HND arrival on Sunday 28 expected 40 late at 0555 hours.

QF676 (Sunday 28 April 2019, the 0900 hours ADL across to MEL with B738 VH-VZC) did not become airborne until 1038 hours, so delayed arrival should be at about 1158, 68 late.

From a different direction, QF853 (VH-VXN, the 1000 hours CBR - MEL airborne at 1126) is similar with predicted arrival to be 1206, 54 late.

Earlier, QF129, the 0930 hours midmorning SYD - PVG was off its blocks 92 late at 1102 hours with delayed suggested arrival 2019, 114 late. The aircraft, A332 VH-EBR, took a long time to lift off - until 1136. There was no obvious reason for the late pushback (perhaps late connecitng passengers?) as the plane had arrived SYD this morning at 0757, 12 late on QF42, the redeye from CGK. 93 minutes should be sufficient to 'reverse' an A332.

Also on 28 April, QF1554 from CBR up to BNE (B717 VH-YQW) is arriving at 2110 hours, half an hour past the allotted.

Saturday 27 saw QF16 from LAX to BNE depart five early, but Monday 29 arrival is predicted to be half an hour behind at 0635 hours.

ABF SmartGates at MEL, SYD and BNE apparently failed at around 0600 hours on Monday 29 April 2019, so the inevitable result is extremely long queues of passengers waiting to be manually processed. If I recall, there are fewer outwards desks for ABF staff with SmartGates than was the case before these were widely in use, so that won't assist timeliness.

As the peak time for departures to Asia starts in an hour at the three major east coast airports, expect flights to incur delays through no fault of their own or the airline staff. Even if all passengers for a flight were checked in an hour before scheduled departure, it's unlikely flights would get away on time. At departures immigration, it would be difficult to 'call forward' passengers whose flights were almost scheduled to depart.

This afternoon, QF37, the 1615 hours MEL - SIN is delayed in its pushback to a predicted 2030, meaning a likely delay to tonight's QF38, one of the redeyes.

Earlier, QF1408, the 0640 hours BXG - SYD departed at 0703 with arrival at 0905, 35 late.

QF79, the 0910 hours MEL - NRT departed at 1003 with arrival suggested 35 late at 1910 hours early this evening.

As at 1020 hours on Monday 29 April, the delays in SYD for QF Asian-bound flights have been minimal.

MEL appears worse, as per QF79 above. QF29, the 0940 hours MEL - HKG was showing as predicted as a 1020 hours departure.

A332 VH-EBN on QF575, the 0825 hours SYD across to PER departed at 1011 hours and was airborne at 1027 so arrival is put back to a suggested 1246, 76 late. The plane had arrived bang on time at 0700 on QF82 ex SIN, but then would have had to proceed from the QFi gate to the QFd terminal.

QF19 (1210 hours SYD to MNL) is expected to depart at 1410.

UPDATE: QF29 departed MEL at 1022. Arrival is expected 35 late at 1755.

Additionally on Monday 29 April 2019, QF422 (B738 VH-VXU, the 1000 hours MEL up to SYD airborne at 1054) should arrive at around 1212 hours, 47 late.

QF61 (0935 hours BNE - NRT) departed at 1003 with arrival delayed to a suggested 1836 hours, 41 late.

QF11 from SYD and QF15 from BNE only incurred very minor delays departing, but 'the 93' ex MEL was off blocks 68 late at 1008 with arrival suggested as half an hour behind at 0655 hours.

The 1025 hours PER across to SYD, QF642, pushed back at 1119 (54 late) with forecast arrival 35 late at 1705 this afternoon.

...on Monday 29 April...

QF19 (1210 hours SYD to MNL) is expected to depart at 1410.

QF19 managed to depart at 1404, 114 minutes late. Anticipated arrival is 2017 tonight, 107 late. A332 VH-EBR has the task, having arrived at 0930 hours this morning, 65 minutes tardy on QF130 ex PVG, it in turn having been delayed by QF129 that arrived PVG 97 minutes late on Sunday 28.,

... on Monday 29 April 2019...

This afternoon, QF37, the 1615 hours MEL - SIN is delayed in its pushback to a predicted 2030, meaning a likely delay to tonight's QF38, one of the redeyes...

QF37 is further delayed to a predicted 2045 hours pushback, making suggested arrival in the Lion City 0215 hours on Tuesday 30 April, 230 minutes behind schedule. Redeye QF38 under the current timetable usually departs at 2350 hours, but has been optimistically delayed until 0315. If 'the 37' does not pull up at the gate until 0215. its southbound next flight may be off blocks at 0325 or so.

A332 VH-EBK on QF580 (scheduled 1245 hours lunchtime PEr across to SYD, but skywards pointing at 1335) should be at its gate 42 late at 1932 this evening.

Due to this morning's late departure of QF79 from MEL, QF62 (NRT down to BNE) is predicted to push back 50 late at 2045 this evening, meaning arrival on Tuesday 29 April at 0640, 45 late. Thanks to generous turnaround times, this hopefully won't result in any of the departures tomorrow morning ex BNE for ASia being delayed.

On 29 April, QF37 departed MEL at 2104, 289 minutes behind the timetable. SIN arrival is expected at 0249, 264 late. In turn, this means QF38 (the redeye) is unlikely to depart Lion City much before 0400 hours local time. MEL arrival should be tomorrow at around 1330 hours, 255 late. A332 VH=-EBN is the aircraft, having arrived in MEL on 29 April at 1916 hours, 61 late on QF476, ex PER. This is the aircraft that I featured above as similarly delayed on this morning's QF575 (scheduled 0825 hours SYD - PER).

The significant delay to QF37 points to an aircraft that might have been originally rostered becoming unavailable.

QF19, the delayed SYD - MNL (VH-EBR) incurred a holding pattern upon approaching MNL so its arrival should be at about 2036, 126 late. The returning QF20 is suggested as pushing back at 2150 (110 late) with Tuesday 30 SYD arrival at 0805 hours, 115 late.

Tuesday 30 April 2019 finds QF403 (0645 hours SYD down to MEL) not having taken off until 0716. B738 VH-VZR should arrive at 0857, 37 minutes late.

MEL may be down to single runway ops as QF412 (0730 hours MEL - SYD) was still as at 0843 waiting for take off clearance.

The MCY - SYD QF1579 has B717 VH-YQX and should arrive at 0914, 64 late.

CBR to SYD QF1464 with Q400 VH-QOW is the 0715 hours that was not airborne until 0828, so arrival has become a suggested 0911, 61 minutes tardy. Fog had been forecast in Canberra this morning.

In more on Tuesday 30 April, QF416 (B738 VH-VXK, the 0830 hours MEL north to SYD) took off at 0933 so arrival at gate ought be 1042 hours, 47 late.

A (suspected false) smoke alarm (detector) went off in the public area (QFd MEL food court, airside), so it had to be evacuated. This always results in delays because passengers must be rescreened through security.

VH-VXQ on QF418, the 0900 hours northbound was airborne at 1008 so arrival will be at about 1117, 52 late.

QF575 (0825 hours morning SYD across to PER) was delayed yesterday and is also today, with A332 VH-EBL taking off at 0948. Arrival is estimated 53 late at 1223 hours.

Also delayed by the CBR fog was QF809, the 0815 hours CBR - MEL that took off at 0937 with VH-VZS. Arrival should be at 1037, 72 late.

QF1011, the Tuesday 30 April 0950 hours MEL down to HBA (B738 VH-VXE) managed to depart at 1001 - creditable considering how the QFd terminal at MEL was evacuated due to the suspected false smoke alarm as above - but then had a long wait for takeoff, until 1043, with many kilograms of wasted fuel.

Arrival should be at 1147, 42 late.

QF61, the 0935 hours BNE - NRT pushed back at 1020 but was not airborne until 1055 hours, with arrival estimated as 1901, 66 late. A333 VH-QPH was delayed on yesterday's QF79 ex MEL, but ex NRT last night on QF62 it as only 29 late arriving in BNE this morning. Perhaps QF61 had to wait for delayed connecting passengers.

As a result, QF62 is showing a 20 minute expected delay ex NRT this evening, to 2015 hours. Sometimes 'the 61' forms QF62, and at other times QF80 to MEL.

QF20 overnight (MNL - SYD) was delayed by the delayed departure of QF19 yesterday, so 'the 20' arrived SYD on 30 April at 0849, 159 minutes late. It formed QF23 (0950 hours SYD - BKK), departing 40 late with arrival this afternoon expected at 1735, 55 late, meaning a tardy departure for QF24, the redeye from BKK down to SYD.

A332 VH-EBN on QF38, the SIN - MEL affected by yesterday's tardy QF37, should arrive at 1329 this afternoon, 254 late. It looks to then be returning to SIN, the 1615 hours that should not have any problems given the still generous turnaround.

Continuing with Tuesday 30 April 2019, QF43 (1650 hours late afternoon MEL up to DPS) took off at 1727, so arrival is estimated as 2155 tonight, 45 late.

The DRW to SYD QF843 (B738 VH-VZB) is arriving at 2007 hours, 62 late.

The 1025 hours PER across to SYD, QF642, pushed back at 1119 (54 late) with forecast arrival 35 late at 1705 this afternoon

Qf 670 adl mel holding on ground for 15mins due single runway and congestion in mel. All those going to lax have been told not to panic! So the mel to lax may be a tad late leaving.

Edit. Now sitting in the QP waiting for things to be sorted. I just had a quick look and found adl to syd to bne to sfo to lax. Oh god, I hope not!
