Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF2 has been delayed overnight (Wed) causing a 14 hour approx delay.

This morning another A380 issue with QF93. They swapped the aircraft to the one due to operate QF35 and downgraded QF35 to a domestic configured A332.

Continuing with Thursday 8 August, QF736, the 1250 hours ADL - SYD (B738 VH-VYL) took off at 1349 so arrival should be 1552, 42 late.

QF1427 (1515 hours SYD - CBR) has been cancelled as has QF536, the 1600 hours SYD up to BNE. So has QF453, the 1700 hours SYD down to MEL.

More cancellations include QF457, QF479, QF467 and QF487 (1745, 1845, 1930 and 2000 hours SYD - MEL) and the SYD - BNE QF546, the 1830 hours.

With a 15 minute frequency SYD to MEL during some peak hours, quite a few afternoon/evening flights are still operating but assuming the cancelled ones were either full or only had a maximum of 20 per cent of seats vacant, how does QF fit all these passengers on its other MEL-bound flights today?

The badly delayed Wednesday 7 August QF12 from JFK to LAX has been further amended with estimated pushback at 0110 on Thursday, turning this into a classic redeye flight, not the usual dinner time to mid evening conveyance.

Except that the classic redeyes are typically west to east midhaul flights of around 8hrs or less. Sleep on aircraft wake up in the morning. In this case still night time when it arrives in LAX. :)

The badly delayed QF12, B789 VH-ZNB, departed JFK at 0114 hours on Thursday 8 August, 424 minutes late, taking off (as implied by Quickstatus) at 0133 hours. LAX arrival should be 0345, 405 late.

The A388 on QF12 from LAX to SYD is predicted to depart half an hour late at 2300 hours on Wednesday night.

QF50 from SFO to MEL pushed back only six minutes late on Wednesday mid evening at 2106 but MEL Friday 9 August arrival is estimated as 0600, half an hour behind.

The 1510 hours MEL - BNE, QF624, was in the sky at 1604 with B738 VH-XZB. Expected arrival is 36 late at 1756 hours.

I had already noted the QF2 delay. Further details are in previous posts.

QF6014, an empty ('ferry') flight is operating on Thursday 8 August with A388 VH-OQA, having taken off from MEL at 1545 with SYD arrival expected at 1645.

VH-OQA seems to be involved in a lot of out-of-course incidents, not that I believe in superstition.

Looks like it will operate the badly delayed QF7 that has been altered to depart at 2100 hours tonight, and due to that also make the Thursday night QF8 ex DFW subject to a delay.

VH-EBN is the A332 substituting on QF35 (and tonight's QF36.) It would be surprising if these flights had 140 plus empty seats so perhaps some booked passengers have had to be transferred to flights such as QF37/QF38.

SYD may be down to single runway operations as at 1620 hours on Thursday 8 August. Confirmation would be appreciated as if so, it usually causes peak period delays.

QF867, the 1330 hours HTI - SYD took off at 1411, arriving at 1627 hours, 37 late with B738 VH-VZW.

Yes, there are ATC restrictions in place due weather, but at a glance there are only 6 cancellations total from SYD to BNE/MEL so not too bad at this stage.

Indeed. Six is what I previously showed above, so for travellers, it's pleasing that there are no more, but one does wonder how QF fits displaced patrons on to the remaining other flights that may have no, or only 10 or 15, unbooked seats.

WNW winds are gusting at up to 54kmh at SYD.

This Mode 13 (use of the east-west SYD runway only) must be the most inefficient with the smallest number of possible movements per hour.

There is ATC restrictions and single runway ops in Sydney right now:

" INFO K. SIGWX: EXP TURB IN CIRCUIT AREA & ON FINAL. SIGMET YMMM E10, VALID TILL 1050. RWY 25. START APPROVAL RQ, WHEN READY FOR PUSH BACK OR ENGINE START, CTC SYD COORDINATOR ON FREQ 127.6, FOR START TIME. WX: CAVOK. TMP: 18. WIND: 270/25-35. XW MN 15 MAX 17 KTS. QNH: 1001. "

With SYD restricted on single runway ops, quite a few inbounds are having to hold. One example is QF468, the 1615 hours MEL - SYD that as airborne at 1701, abiout half an hour behind schedule. B738 VH-XZC should arrive at 1831, 51 late, showing how much time a relatively brief holding pattern and amended runway operations can mean is lost.

QF1483 (1630 hours short hop SYD - CBR) took off at 1734 with Q400 VH-LQG expected to arrive at 1816 hours, 51 late.

Wednesday 7 August's QF12 departed LAX 59 minutes late at 2329 with Friday 9 arrival in SYD suggested as 0713, 43 late.

With the extremely late B789 on the transcon USA QF12 revised to become an even later estimated LAX arrival at 0355 hours on Thursday, its onward sector to BNE has been finally adjusted to become a projected 0520 hours pushback. This means Friday 9 BNE arrival at 1145 hours, 340 minutes behind the schedule.

QF15 tomorrow is displaying as punctual so the aircraft from the QF56 arrival may be pinched to operate 'the 15.'

Luckily there is a 787 BNE-PER-BNE rotation on Friday that looks to have been bumped to allow for an on time departure of QF15.

Flyerqf, I referred to this a few posts back - previous page.

However as you were writing, I looked it up again on FR24 where QF589 (BNE to PER) remains showing as a 'B789' but this may reflect how QF has updated its site but that has not yet been reflected on FR24.

QF589 is still operating but with a delay awaiting inbound QF16. It will probably be fairly empty given the size of the delay on a domestic service. Probably still running because it’s a crew training flight.

FYI - Melbourne airport is operating with one runway as well.

Many aircraft are therefore holding. QF688 (B738 VH-VXL), the 1710 hours ADL across to MEL took off at 1747, about 22 minutes late. However due to a holding pattern near Bendigo, arrival should be 53 late at 1953 hours.

QF455 (VH-XZP, the 1730 hours SYD - MEL airborne at 1804, about 20 late) held above Mt Buller in the usual position, for quite some time, so arrival is suggested as 2000 hours, 55 minutes late, so a net loss of a 35 minutes.

The 1715 hours SYD - MEL, QF451 (VH-VXQ) is close behind with at gate arrival forecast for 2004 hours, 74 late. QF459, the 1800 hours ex SYD remained holding as at 1940 but MEL arrival should be around the 2020 hours mark, 45 late: aircraft is A332 VH-EBB.
