Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Much later on 26 September, B738 VH-VXA is on QF489, the 1945 hours early evening SYD - MEL not in the sky until 2108. Arrival at gate should be 2231, 71 minutes behind the timetable.

Stablemate VH-VZV is on 'the 487', the 2000 hours SYD to MEL airborne at 2059. The non-sequential numbering is because the '15' and '45' from the hour flights were added at a more recent time than the 'on the hour and half hour' flights on this busy route. Arrival is suggested as 2217, 42 late.

QF2050, the scheduled 0630 DPO-MEL was cancelled this morning, with passengers rebooked onto JQ732 and JQ734 ex-LST later today. The aircraft, DH8D VH-QUO, which operated QF2061 MEL-DPO last night, is currently enroute MEL-DPO as QLK710D (operating as QF524, ordinarily a scheduled noon SYD-BNE flight).
Having arrived in MEL at 0845, VH-QUO is now scheduled to operate QF2078, the delayed 0835 MEL-MQL.

QF796, the scheduled 0925 MEL-ASP pushed back from the gate at 0957 but was not wheels up until 1040. The aircraft, B738 VH-VXD, earlier departed BNE and arrived MEL around 30 min late, subsequently being caught up in the queue as 50 kmh northerly winds limit arrivals and departures to runway 34 in MEL. QF797, the return MEL -ASP service, will therefore also run at least an hour late this afternoon.

Also on Friday 27 September, QF29, the 0940 hours MEL - HKG departed at 1009 with suggested arrival becoming 1752, 32 minutes behind schedule.

Later in the day, QF27 (1235 hours lunchtime SYD - SCL operated by a B744) pushed back 58 late so arrival in Chile should be 1150, 45 late. This may very slightly delay QF28 returning.

To add to the delays today, QF156 AKL-MEL (B738 VH-XZJ) is expected around 16 31, 51 min behind schedule.
QF483 SYD-MEL. the 15 15 hours service was cancelled. Q486 MEL-SYD 14 15 hours also had the same luck.

A332 VH-EBG on Friday 26 September's 1240 hours MEL - PER, QF769 took off at 1343. Resultant arrival looks to be 1535 hours mid afternoon, 45 late.

At 1520 hours on Friday 27 September, winds were gusting to 56kmh at MEL but at 1406 had reached 78kmh, the latter extremely high. Because it's a public holiday in Melbourne, the airport is not as busy as usual (although GWS AFL fans who did not attend today's AFL parade in the Melbourne CBD would be flying down for tomorrow's Grand Final), so delays are less than one might expect.

It has been gusting since 5am. I was on QF36 this morning with a very hard landing!

In further today, QF623 BNE-MEL (B738 VH-VXE) is suggested to arrive at 17 37, 72 min behind original schedule.
QF627 BNE-MEL, the 16 10 hours service has been cancelled.
QF455 SYD-MEL 17 30 hours is also cancelled.

You landed at 0518 hours. BOM suggests winds would have been gusting to 50 or 52kmh (27 to 28 knots), not as high as later but not insignificant.

jb747 has commented maybe a couple of years ago that a 'soft landing' is not always best, paraphrasing IIRC.

On Thursday 26 September, QF12, the 1810 hours crosscountry JFK - LAX pushed back at 1959, arriving at 2254, 114 late. This meant the connecting A388 on QF12 could not depart for SYD until 0039 on Friday (129 late) with Saturday 28 arrival at 0833, 123 minutes behind schedule.

While often in such circumstances it is not held, on this occasion QF94 (scheduled at 2240 ex LAX) was off blocks at 0055 on Friday so Saturday arrival is a predicted 0910 hours, 100 late.

'The 16' (formed by QF12) was of course also tardy, leaving LAX at 0117 (117 late) with BNE Saturday arrival at 0753, 108 late.

The reason behind all this late running was that on Thursday, QF11 (b789 VH-ZNH) departed LAX 101 late at 1001, arriving JFK at 1804, 84 late. It lost further time on the ground turning around to form 'the 12.' In turn, this was due to QF15 on Thursday departing BNE 121 late at 1221, arriving LAX at 0831, 151 minutes behind the timetable.

AFFer MEL_Traveller previously remarked this is common when QF11 is delayed arriving in JFK, although hardly restricted to JFK. Unfortunately like most transport modes when an aircraft is late arriving at a busy airport, delays can compound as the subsequent departure loses its (in airlines' case) slot time.

QF2130, Saturday 28 September 1230 hours MEL - CBR has got the boot.

The 1055 hours morning SYD - JNB, QF63, departed at 1149 with an 'appropriate' arrival time of not '0747' but '1747', 42 late as the estimate. This will delay departure of the 1910 hours scheduled redeye QF64 back to SYD.

Sunday 29th of Sept sees QF35 MEL-SIN 11 55 hours service with a tentative departure at 18 00. This will significantly delay the return leg QF36.

This will delay tomorrow morning’s QF93.
Looks like QF94 will turn around for tomorrow’s QF93 but won’t be enough for an on time departure. Will reduce the delay though, rather than waiting for QF36.

Looks like there might have been an issue with the aircraft as the flight is now cancelled. This will possibly also affect the return flight QF36. Re-accommodating all of those pax is going to be a tricky affair given how full other flights are.

QF38 is fully booked, so unless passengers are booked via SYD or BNE, it looks like plenty of passengers will have to stay overnight

On Monday 7 October 2019, the 1000 hours MEL to LAX QF93 departed at 1059. A388 VH--OQG should arrive at 0710, 45 late, but still in sufficient time for JFK-bound patrons to depart punctually on QF11, the B789 due out of LAX at 0820 hours.

QF63, the 1155 hours Tuesday 8 October SYD to JNB did not depart until 1414 this afternoon, 139 minutes tardy. Arrival is estimated as 1940 local time, 100 late, delaying retuning redeye QF64.

When B744s cease and B789 or some other aircraft take over, flight timings may change, but will the almost incessant delays on this route end? Running not far short of two hours late must mean some miss connecting flights in JNB and may have to overnight.
