Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Wednesday 9 October has seen QF93 depart Mel 64 late at 1104 hours with estimated LAX arrival an hour behind at 0725. The connecting B789 on QF11 across to JFK will apparently be delayed but this should not be much as from observation, passengers, luggage, freight and mail can normally transfer within 75 minutes.

Friday 11 October has QF63, the 1155 hours SYD to JNB B744 showing as departing at 1400 this afternoon with consequent estimated arrival as 1845 hours, 105 late. This flight was also tardy yesterday. It is one of QFi's worst performers for timekeeping. No one else has a nonstop: alternatives are almost bankrupt SAA from PER, or classy SQ via SIN.

Another sadly frequent late runner, QF63 that with AEDT has become a timetabled 1050 hours ex SYD pushed back at 1156 with estimated arrival 40 minutes tardy at 1720.

QF127, the 1120 hours SYD to HKG was off blocks at 1206 with arrival suggested as 35 down at 1835.

The 1235 hours lunchtime Q27 pushed back at 1353 from SYD so arrival is likely in distant SCL at 1225 hours, 75 minutes behind. This will delay QF28.

UPDATE: QF63 did not move from its aerobridge until 1443, so delayed arrival should be 1905 tonight local Sth African time, 125 minutes tardy.

QF1787 TSV-BNE (B717 VH-NXK) is expected at 16 32, 67 min behind.
Earlier, A333 VH-QPH as QF24 BKK-SYD arrived at 9 21, 116 min tardy. The return leg QF23 is expected at 17 43, 63 late.

Including today, in its last five flights, QF63 from SYD to JNB has arrived within 15 minutes of the timetable twice, been in excess of 90 minutes late twice but Friday 11 October takes the cake with updated likely arrival of more than 150 late.

This morning the B744 arrived on time from SFO as QF74. When I was last at SYDi, the aircraft was towed from an apron stand but this may not occur every day. There is clearly a problem with it coming off blocks at anything close to the schedule, but as noted above travellers who want to fly quickly to JNB ex SYD lack an alternative.

The joys of a monopoly own metal route.

In further today, some delays in and outbound Sydney.
QF539 BNE-SYD (B738 VH-VYI) arrived at 19 22, 87 min tardy.
QF545 BNE-SYD (B738 VH-VZI) had a revised arrival at 19 33, 53 behind.
QF547 BNE-SYD (B738 VH-XZO) expected at 20 10, 60 late.
QF927 CNS-SYD (B738 VH-VXG) has a suggested arrival at 22 21, 151 min behind schedule.
QF102 NAN-SYD (B738 VH-XZD) is delayed and is predicted to arrive to gate at 20 53, 53 min late.
A332 VH-EBB has been delayed all day. Initially as QF922 SYD-CNS with arrival at 13 47, 127 tardy. The return leg QF923 CNS-SYD arrived at 18 54, 139 behind. This then formed as QF571 SYD-PER which is now expected at 21 33, 117 min behind schedule.
A333 VH-QPB has also been playing catch up. First leg QF38 SIN-MEL, the red-eye arrived at 12 03, 108 tardy. This formed as QF153 MEL-AKL which arrived at 19 09, 109 behind. The return leg, QF158 is expected to arrive at 22 21, 81 min tardy.

Cancellations:
QF473 SYD-MEL 15 45 hours
QF450 MEL-SYD 16 30 hours
QF452 MEL-SYD 17 00 hours
QF453 SYD-MEL 17 00 hours
QF496 MEL-SYD 17 45 hours
QF479 SYD-MEL 18 45 hours
QF462 MEL-SYD 19 00 hours
QF563 BNE-SYD 18 05 hours
QF493 SYD-MEL 19 15 hours
QF466 MEL-SYD 19 45 hours

In the second major problem for Friday 11 October's B744 timetabled departures ex SYD, QF25, the 2150 hours redeye to HND has been cancelled.

This flight is often full, as many school groups visit. How do booked passengers get to Japan? Unlikely they would all fit on tomorrow's northbound flight.

I suspect that is more related to the typhoon as there are plenty of flights to HND that are cancelled.

Just advised tonights QF2 SIN-SYD will be delayed 5hrs now departing 00:10 instead of 19:30 no reason given.

Strange as the LHR-SIN leg seems to be on time...possible maintenance issue?

Whilst anything is possible, maintenance action tends to be more open ended. 00:10 is curiously specific.

It is unusual but from past observations (mainly northbound ex SIN), this can be because crew from a previous delayed flight have had insufficient rest according to fatigue regulations (and/or perhaps Qantas' usual practice, which if I am not mistaken in some timetabled 'slips' - layovers - sees flight crew off duty for a longer period than cabin crew.)

As jb747 implied, it is unlikely to be for maintenance. The fact that the airline "knows" the amended departure time indicates to me there's a fair chance it's a crewing issue.

Why would anyone expect QF to give its passengers a reason? You're an inconvenience to the staff (and management).

Such delays are rarely for crew. Not impossible, but a fraction of the occasions that you jump to this conclusion.

Cabin crew and pilot slips have little relation to each other. The cabin crew from both Australian and the UK turn around in Singapore. The pilots go through. Their slip is a different length depending upon the direction they are travelling. An easy way to see if it's even slightly likely to be crew related is to look at the arrival times of aircraft for the previous day. If one was exactly 24 hours prior to the new departure, then it could possibly be crew, though even that isn't certain. In this case nothing arrived 24 hours prior.

That must be why Singair didn't give a reason for my recent 7 hour delay in Singapore.

The P1 team advised they are swapping the aircraft - not sure why. Flight is full as was QF36 which is also delayed and all other flights back to AUS so the lounge is a mess...

Someone tweeted that the delay to QF36 was because a spare part was needed implying there was an issue with OQA. Either way, there is likely to be a delay to QF93 unless that is being formed by the inbound QF94.

Assuming all goes to plan and QF36 does depart at 00.40 this morning, there should be enough time to turn it around in Melbourne for QF35.

Now 00:30 in SIN and QF2 still not departed something to do with PAX and incorrect visas sigh

@Mrmaxwell it looks like you are finally on the move as QF2 is now showing as Gate Closed.

QF36 however has been further delayed to 02.00.

In a reason I have not previously observed Google giving, it is attributing the QF36 delay to 'runway delay.' Aircraft does not appear to have become airborne as at 0227 SIN time so MEL arrival is likely to be post 1200 'high noon.'

Due to Typhoon Hagibis, the Saturday night 2150 hours QF25 from SYD to HND has been delayed overnight to a projected, pleasant pushback time of 1255 hours for Japan arrival at 2025.
