Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF1 is delayed due engineering

Thank you milehighclub (great name).

QFi suggests departure will be at 2200 hours, 365 minutes late with arrival at LHR's allocated gate on Wednesday 14 September 2022 at about 1225 hours, 350 late. Often 'the 1' seems to overstay in SIN and lose time, and any gain on the schedule from blocks off in SIN to the reverse at LHR is negated or minimised.

B789 VH-ZNF on QF63, 0935 hours morning Tuesday 13 SYD-JNB was in the sky at 1029 with arrival at 1614, 34 minutes behind achedule, anticipated.

ZNC is on 'the 9' that last night was airborne from PER at 1947 meaning arrival in LHR at 0610 hours this morning, 56 minutes behind the timetable.

A388 VH-OQB is arriving today (Tuesday) in LHR as QF1 at 0718, 43 minutes tardy.

Continuing with Tuesday 13 September, QF340, the weekly 1840 hours APW-SYD (A333 VH-QPD) was airborne at 1931 with at gate arrival expected at 2220 hours, 45 minutes tardy.

With a minute to go before 2200 hours, the delayed QF1 (see above) is not visible on FR24. Sometimes this may be benign, caused by a building in the way of signals, but often in the past it hasn't been good news. Occasionally, it sees flights delayed overnight, not that this has yet occurred tonight.

UPDATE: At 2202 hours, QF1 departed, promptly becoming airborne at 2218 hours. SIN arrival is predicted at gate at 0446 local time, 331 minutes behind schedule. The forecast 0530 hours departure from SIN to LHR looks impossible. 0635 is the earliest based on recent stays, but often time on the ground becomes greater than two hours.

VHZNC is not continuing to MEL as the QF10 today, it will turn around in PER to operate the QF9. The QF9 from MEL will be a 330. Once in PER, looks like this is becoming the continuation of the QF10 hence the delay on that today.

This was a strategy QFi adopted prior to COVID-19 so interesting to see it continuing. Thankfully, it hasn't been required often since resumption of QF9/QF10 via PER and not 'temporary' DRW.

Last night's delayed QF1 was in SIN on Wednesday 14 from 0403 to 0613 hours this morning, losing time on the ground. LHR arrival is estimated as 1229 hours according to FR24, or 1305 according to QFi. Latter would be 390 minutes late.

A333 VH-QPH on QF151 (0710 hours MEL-AKL) took off at 0810 hours, arriving at 1323 hours, 38 late.

The substitute A332 operating QF10 PER-MEL today is estimated to depart at 1835 instead of 1310, so 325 minutes tardy ex the Western Australian capital.

A333 VH-QPC on Wednesday 14's QF145 (1120 hours SYD-AKL) took off at a badly delayed 1551 mid afternoon, so arrival at gate became 2029 hours, 244 minutes late. The returning QF148, the 1740 hours, was airborne at 2137 so expected arrival is 2248, 208 late.

Colleague QPJ is on QF41 (1350 hours SYD up to CGK) airborne at 1522 for a projected 1931 hours early evening at gate time, 46 minutes tardy.

QF94 from LAX to MEL (B789 VH-ZND) is diverting to SYD on Thursday 15 September 2022, with arrival expected at 0933 hours. Its timetable states arrival in MEL should be at 0600 hours, so by the time it arrives in MEL at say 1145 hours, it'll almost be six hours late. This was the 2130 hours Tuesday evening flight from LAX that pushed back at 0110 hours on Wednesday super early morning.

QFi's 'flight status' web page shows it departing SYD at 0940 after an hour's stay, arriving in MEL at 1115. These estimates need to be revised as they underestimate the delay.

Is this a famous Quickstatus fuel stop or some other reason?

An 1:10 for a refuel and crew change is very doable. It did land at 0830 not 0933.

Interesting. Of course it was QF94, not QF1: apologies.

The plane (allowing five minutes for taxiing to gate, often an underestimate) was stationary on the ground in SYD from 0835 to pushback at 1011, so 96 minutes or a few minutes less, arriving MEL at 1146 hours, 346 minutes behind schedule and only a minute later than I guessed above.

QF1 today (Thursday 15 September) with A388 VH-OQK looks to be arriving LHR at approximately 0726 hours, 51 minutes late.

B789 VH-ZNC that unusually originated in PER (rather than MEL) yesterday as QF9 should arrive LHR at 0555 hours, 50 late, not too bad considering luggage, freight and mail (plus self-loading freight) had to switch from the A332 brought in to operate the MEL-PER "domestic" QF9 leg.

A332 VH-EBO substituting for the usual B789 on 'the 10' yesterday took off from PER at 2029, arriving MEL at the uncomfortable hour of 0128 hours, 408 minutes behind schedule. Its next duty has been QF69, the 0940 hours MEL up to DEL that was airborne at 1029 for arrival of a mooted 1840 hours early this evening, 40 down.

B738 VH-XZG on notorious late runner QF143 (0930 hours SYD-AKL) arrived at 1516 hours, 41 late.

Wednesday 14 September's QF104 (1055 hours HNL down to SYD, A333 VH-QPA) was delayed on the ground even though QF103 arrived just 29 late. 'The 104' was airborne at 1433 hours so on Thurday 15, SYD at gate arrival is estimated as 2047 hours, 202 minutes behind the timetable.

It doesn't seem this class leader is forming another passenger flight tonight.

Wednesday 14 September's QF12 (A388 VH-OQD, the 2255 hours late night LAX-SYD airborne at 0029 on Thursday 15) should arrive on Friday 16 at 0725, half an hour behind the timetable.

After arriving in MEL as QF94 very late this morning (see above), B789 VH-ZND's next tour was QF9, the 1515 hours mid afternoon MEL-PER-LHR that arrived at its intermediate stop at 1748, 33 late, and is suggested as arriving at LHR's gate at 0535 hours, half an hour tardy on Friday 16.

On Friday 16 September 2022, B789 VH-ZNE on QF63, the 0930 hours SYD-JNB was not airborne until 1101 hours, so expected at gate arrival in South Africa should be at about 1620 hours, 45 behind.

Earlier, VH-EBJ on the often punctual QF72 (SIN-PER) arrived at gate in the small hours at 0023, 33 behind.

B738 VH-XZE was on QF121, the 0930 hours SYD-ZQN up up and away at 1036 jhours for a 42 minute late arrival in the 'ski capital' at 1512 mid afternoon. This is the third time in seven trips that the arrival has been more than half an hour late.

QF151 (0710 hours early morning MEL-AKL) was 32 late arriving at AKL at 1317 hours with A332 VH-EBL.

QF11 (1015 hours midmorning SYD up to LAX) was a lot worse with A388 VH-OQD not airborne until 1339 this afternoon, for a suggested same day arrival at gate at 0943 hours, 163 minutes behind the timetable.

VH-EBG on the 1120 hours late morning SYD-AKL (QF145) was in the sky at 1329 for gate arrival at 1814 hours, 109 late. QF148 returning is expected to arrive in SYD at about 2108, 108 late so no further loss of time.

The lunchtime 1230 hours SYD up to MNL old stalwart QF19 was airborne at 1357 with A333 class leader VH-QPA. Arrival looks to be at about 1951, 61 late, meaning that the 2035 hours southbound redeye QF20 will be tardy.

VH-QPC is on QF41 (1350 hours SYD-CGK) that was in the sky at 1540 hours for a predicted 85 late arrival in Indonesia at 2010 tonight. QF42 will also be tardy.

A388 VH-OQB on QF1 arrived London Heathrow this morning 44 late at 0719 hours.

'The 9' had B789 VH-ZND, arriving also at LHR at 0547 hours, 42 behind.

On Saturday afternoon, 17 September, QF9 (1515 hours MEL-PER-LHR, B789 VH-ZNH) was airborne at 1611 with arrival in PER expected at 1751, 36 late.

A388 VH-OQH arrived L:HR as QF1 at 0733, 58 minutes late.

A332 VH-EBS on QF51 (1055 BNE up to SIN) took off at 1144 with arrival due at 1741, 31 minutes late.

Earlier, QF67 (A332 VH-EBV, the 0930 hours SYD-BLR new flight) took off at 1024, so arrival at gate should be 1727, 32 late.

Sunday 18 September sees QF11 as an A388, not a B789. It is expected to depart SYD at 1315, three hours late for LAX.

B789 VH-ZNH on QF9 should arrive LHR at 0535, half an hour late. Colleague ZNI is on 'the 10' from LHR that looks to be arriving PER early this afternoon at 1212, 32 late.

The delayed Sunday 18 A388 (VH-OQD) on the 1015 hours SYD-LAX was airborne at 1402 hours, later than predicted. Same day arrival should be at 1015 hours, 195 minutes behind schedule.

QF9 (1515 hours mid afternoon MEL-PER-LHR) pre-COVID was quite punctual, but with the resumption of operations via Perth WA, it seems not to as good in 2022.

On Sunday 18 September, B789 VH-ZNB took off at 1619 with PER arrival suggested as an even 1800 hours, 45 late. This doesn't make it impossible to arrive LHR on time on Monday morning ('sparrows') but it will be challenging. A major factor is whether it can slightly reduce the allowed ground time in Perth.

VH-ZNG is on QF7 (1540 hours long flights, SYD-DFW). It was airborne at 1641 so same day arrival should be at 1635 hours, 35 minutes late.

QF103, the 1925 hours early evening SYD up to HNL is predicted to push back half an hour late.

Continuing with Sunday 18, the expected delay to departure of QF103 (SYD-HNL, the 1925 hours) has extended to 2100. QF104 passengers (ex HNL Sunday morning local time) should expect at least a similar delay.

On Monday 19 September, QF104, the 1055 hours (Sunday 18) HNL-SYD (A333 VH-QPF that was airborne at 1257) is arriving at 1915 hours, 110 minutes behind the timetable. QF103 (1925 hours tonight back up to HNL) should depart at 2145.

Earlier, QF9 from MEL and PER arrived LHR at 0619 hours, 74 late with B789 VH-ZNB.

Flagship QF1 (A388 VH-OQH) was airborne at 1901 hours, just under three hours late. SIN arrival is expected at 0122 hours, 187 late on Tuesday 20, so it'll be lucky if passengers reach LHR by 0800 hours local time.

QF146 (afternoon 1610 hours AKL-SYD, A333 VH-QPB) did not become airborne until 1913 due to its late arrival as the frequently delayed QF143 (0930 hours SYD-AKL). Arrival at gate for 'the 146' should be roughly 2023, 153 minutes tardy.

The 1925 hours evening SYD-CHC QF139 is predicted to push back at 2100 hours.

QF25, the recently resumed 2055 hours SYD-HND that years ago was a B744 but is now just a smaller A333 is delayed overnight: pushback is forecast for 1305 hours tomorrow. From memory, the range of times QFi can do this when there's a substantial delay is limited due to demand for slots. In tonight's case, it's almost certainly due to the typhoon sweeping through Japan.

The delayed QF1 was in SIN from 0054 to 0305 hours (yuk!) on Tuesday 20 September 2022. VH-OQH should arrive LHR at 0852, 197 minutes tardy.

B789 VH-ZNB on the Monday 19 QF10 (1155 hours LHR-PER-MEL) took off at 316 with arrival today in PER estimated as 1257, 77 late, making an on time at gate arrival impossible in Melbourne.

A333 VH-QPF on the weekly QF333 (0625 hours ex SYD and 0930 hours ex BNE) on Tuesday took off from the former at 0742, arriving BNE at 0853 hours, 58 late, and then becoming airborne at 1025 for suggested arrival at 1750, 40 minutes down at APW.

B738 VH-XZE on QF101 (0835 hours SYD-NAN) was in the sky at 0929 hours so at gate arrival looks to be around the 1506 hours mark, 31 late.

Today's QF25 from SYD to HND has been cancelled, but as noted in a previous post, yesterday's has been delayed overnight. This must be due to the typhoon.

QF81 (1110 hours SYD up to SIN) is predicted to depart at 1200 'high noon'.

QF19 (lunchtime 1230 hours SYD up to MNL) is predicted to depart two hours late, so there should be at least a similar delay for the redeye QF20 back from MNL overnight.

The 1925 hours early evening SYD-CHC (QF139) is predicted to push back at 2100 hours mid evening.
