Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Thanks for that. I can't remember where I read it, but it said OQC is having an engine replaced, OQD is stuck in LAX and OQE is under going a preplanned maintenance program in Manila.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

OQD has been out of service at LAX since Wednesday, so it may be something to do with that.
This is the current positions of the A380s according to flightradar24
OQA QF11
OQB LHR
OQC SYD
OQD LAX
OQE MNL
OQF QF9
OQG QF10
OQH QF94
OQI QF93
OQJ QF8
OQK QF1
OQL QF2

As a result. QF21 has been delayed 13 hours for the last two nights, as a B744 is currently subbing for an A380 on QF11/12.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

QF7 delayed again today - this time by 7 hours.

Yesterdays QF93 to LAX turned around immediately to position to SYD in order to operate the delayed QF7. This aircraft would normally sit at LAX all day to operate QF12.

If OQD is not back in service, QF12 may be cancelled or delayed overnight.

QF12 is cancelled. OQD is still grounded. As a result, tomorrow's QF11 is now a 747. With no spare 747, this will also delay Monday night's QF21 to 10am Tuesday.

This is the downside of the increased utilisation.

If only they still had that 744 they sent to the desert last week.

What happened to OQD and why does OQC need an engine change if it just got back from a C check?

Are we sure that OQC is the engine change and it hasn't been confused with OQD. OQC was out of service for half a day, whereas OQD has been out of service since Wednesday.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

The proximity of a C check has nothing to do with any engine change. They are done as needed, and innumerable issues can call for them. For instance a couple of birds could cause an engine change, and I doubt that they are controlled by C checks.

Let's see. Flightradar24 shows OQC as currently in the air as QF8 and OQD as having last operated as QF11 on the 24th.

So can we assume that OQD took some sort of damage during it's flight to LAX on Wednesday which has apparently required an engine change?

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

This article may go some of the way towards explaining the delays:

Qantas A380 grounded in Los Angeles after mystery problem with hydraulics

It is laudable that QF is trying to achieve increased utilisation for its fleet, but once again it shows what trouble a transport operator - surface or air - can get into if it lacks sufficient suitable equipment or rollingstock to have spare(s) that meet demand when an aircraft, truck, locomotive, railcar or bus suddenly breaks down.

Assuming that some flights are fully booked, a B744 is only a partial substitute for an A380 in the way QF configures both.

Further adding to QF's woes is that the Monday evening QF2 from LHR to SYD has been delayed in DXB and is not expected to arrive SYD on Wednesday 1 July until 0650 in lieu of the timetabled 0510.

Wednesday 1 July 2015's QF10 arrival in MEL is an anticipated 93 minutes late and not due until 2228 (in three hours' time), so QF9 back to DXB and LHR will not depart until about 0030 on Thursday 2 July.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

one thing goes wrong and it multiplies - my mother was on QF2 from LHR delayed 12 hours (passengers overnight in hotel at LHR), delayed again in DBX (apparently because passenger took too long shopping and they missed the slot), arrived last night too late for last flight connection to CBR (another overnight in hotel in Sydney), hotel fire at 5.30 am forced evacuation, flight from SYD to CBR at 9 am in the air circled due to pea soup fog then diverted to land in MBL at 11:45 am, flight back to Canberra finally arrived at 13.20.

Service great all the way though and mum and aunt both happy :)

Had a similar experience with the multiples back in May. EK flight delayed about 3.5 hours ex BCN which resulted in a much shorter stay at the Dubai Transit Hotel prior to catching QF2 which then a medical offload for a pax not well enough to travel. We weren't hugely delayed ex DXB but they had to file for a new slot over Omani airspace which is extremely busy. Finally flying in to SYD and on a hat-trick there was a lot of fog about so the Captain warned us that if we heard the engines power up he would be conducting a missed approach and we'd have to divert to MEL however we got in to.

And I thought I was jinxed! That is a pretty bad run of luck :)

Yeah, the fog in CBR was quite bad yesterday. It was very clear on the drive towards the airport, but the fog got worse the closer to the airport (makes me think that fog likes airports and avoids other parts of the city if possible)
My flight to SYD (QF1510, 0630, 717) was delayed departing until after 730. The fog required the aircraft be deiced and the flights to MEL, ADL and BNE were ahead in the queue.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Last night our A330 was an hour late departing as QF had to pull 2 bags off the SYD-PER flight. The travelers had their bags transfer but these two left the airport in Sydney and could not get back in time.

Re: General Qantas Delays/Cancellations/etc. Discussion

Sitting in the Flounge in MEL right now waiting to board QF9. Looks like it's going to be a long night - the plane is surrounded by fire trucks, an unknown substance has been spilled in the hold. My connection in DXB will almost certainly be missed - flying in to CDG and then on to CPH. This is going to be very messy as the plan was to join Mrs Cat and Kitten minor in Paris and travel via SAS to CPH. OW have looked after me very well in the past with missed connections as I'm WP, but no status at all with SA. Bummer...
